Craythur: The Reluctant Raidcaller

I'm a reluctant Voip user. Such programs are invaluable for organization & communication of course. So I'm not against them. I'm simply on the fence about them personally.

One reason is my voice. It's naturally deep. When I hear myself I think I sound like Eeyore.

I have a touch of social anxiety. So I'm always a little too concerned with what I fear people are thinking about me. Since I can't see non-verbal cues in Voip I often end up feeling a bit nervous.

Surely I'm not the only one who is afraid to interrupt or talk over some one? Politeness often keeps me quiet even when I have something to say or the answer to a question. This is especially true if the channel is being very active or being monopolized by one or two persons. So by the time I do overcome my manners and break in I may sound impatient or curt. Then my anxiety kicks in.

Empathy is a two edged sword and I've got it in spades. While I think it's generally a good thing to care about what others are feeling it can sometimes be a distraction...

Taking a Risk of sorts.

GW2 is nearly here and I'm truly thankful for that. I certainly enjoy the game. Beyond that I'm really looking forward to playing with the Gaiscioch community again.

I've been doing a lot of thinking recently. I'm sure it is the sort of self-reflection that most people go through when their lives are suddenly turned upside down. There is nothing particularly unique about that to be sure. My comfortable wall of denial has been breached forcing me to take a long look at where I am and how I've got here. I'm frankly rather disappointed with who I am. Maybe I can change that. It's far too early to tell.

In late July my wife announced to me that she had met another man and no longer wished to continue our marriage. She won't be coming home from Colorado in Autumn. This came as an enormous shock to me. I knew she was unhappy, but I didn't realize I was a source for her unhappiness. We've been together since 1990. I thought we had a strong relationship. As it turns out she hasn't loved me for much of the last decade...

A Prodigal Son

It's been over a year since I last ran with the Tuatha. After my disillusionment with EA/Mythic and the future of Warhammer I followed a handful of the family to LoTRO. I enjoy Middle Earth. I think the level disparities within the group were our undoing. By the time we were all the same level Rift beta and a new edition of DDO pulled most of us away. I played a bit of the Rift beta myself. The game didn't hook me enough to play at launch. So we came to a parting of the ways.

I briefly dabbled with Cataclysm. My wife still plays WoW on and off so I always end up being tempted back for short periods of time to quest with her. Playing a goblin again was humorous enough. I kept finding myself wanting to play a proper Warhammer greenskin. Even so, there is something quite enjoyable about playing through very polished content even if it is candy-flossed.

I didn't game much until SWTOR released. Being a life long Star Wars fan made trying the game a no brainer. I enjoyed myself and would have kept playing if real life hadn't thrown a wrench into the works...

Twitter

Oh I haven't forgotten this blog is here. I've been meaning to post despite the fact that I've given up on Warhammer for the moment. I could post about Our Lord of the Rings Online antics I suppose. Maybe next time.

I've recently overcome the last vestiges of good judgment left in my muddled brain and decided to goof around with a Twitter Account. I'm slow to jump into any sort of social networking. I end up feeling obligated to post regularly. How hard can it be to come up with one liners every couple of days?

If you are into that sort of thing, you can find me @kraythur. Someone already took Craythur with a "C" which surprises me to no end. I hope they're good people.

The Twitter feed is probably going to be used for listening to various people (all of them funnier and brighter than myself)and game/geek news. But if there are folks to interact with I'm sure I'll post messages of my own. Maybe it's a way to keep in ouch with guildies out of game, between games, or what have you...

Ready for something new.

I can no longer fool myself. I am dissatisfied with Mythic/Ea/Bioware (or whatever they are branding themselves as this quarter) and the state of Warhammer Online. I've been teetering on the edge of frustration for a couple of weeks now. I've reached the tipping point I'm sad to say.

I've just unsubscribed from Warhammer online. I hope that this action will serve a positive end. Somehow. Perhaps if enough people unsub EA will have to put some real money and effort into the game to bring us back. Then again they may just pull the plug. While that would sadden me I can't continue paying them a monthly fee in hopes that suddenly things will change for the better.

My account doesn't end until October 4th so there's plenty of time to say howdy to everyone. There's also time for Mythic to convince me that the RVR packs are more than just vaporware promises and that they are able to host a well populated server that is both fun and stable. RVR is only fun with lots of people to play with/against...

50 things that would make Warhammer even more fun!

50 things that I think would make Warhammer online even more enjoyable.

1) Give us the option to toggle the flight animation to "off" so we can go straight to the zoning screen.

2) Let us enter the Hunters Vale instance at any level. It can remain a T1 instance if there are concerns about farming it for higher level gear/PQ drops. But let us 40's zone in and solo the lord for a cloak if we want to.

3) Remove the lock out timers for all city dungeons. Having more Sentinel gear and greater wards is not game breaking.

4) Remove crafting containers and money from Keep PQ bags. Let the new folks gear up.

5) Drop the officers medallion costs from gear higher than conquerer.

6) Increase the drop rate of crests in ORVR.

7) Reward RR level appropriate crests for zone locks.

8) Implement a new PVE dungeon boss loot system. A token system would allow us to gather tokens with each boss kill which can be used to purchase the appropriate gearnormally dropped by that boss. Alternately, have the boss drop only gear usable by the party that killed the boss...

Zomg Hunter's Vale!

Zomg Huntersvale!

Craythur was just a wee little Runepriest for the original Huntersvale Live Event. I have fuzzy recollections of taking part in a PQ in the RVR lake and hunting down all those tracks. That's about it. I was far too small and unconfident to be healing the Huntersvale instance at the time. So I didn't get the stag cloak. I came to regret that.

Being able to shapeshift instantly and run to safety would have been handy on numerous occasions. Being able to run through the lower tier rvr lakes while not looking like a *ahem* "stout" free kill in a bath robe might have saved me from a couple of WE gankings. Maybe not. But I found myself constantly wishing I had got one of those cloaks while I could. Mythic eventually released the instance as a T1 dungeon so there were plenty of newer folks with cloaks in the lakes to remind me of what I had missed.

A year later and Huntersvale is back. This time the cloak would be mine! It took some time and effort to get groups together willing to hit Huntersvale more than once...

Taking time to smell the (blood soaked) flowers.

I'm here for the ORVR. Anyone reading this blog knows that by now. Having said that, I sometimes miss picking flowers.

Gathering flowers & Mining ore in that Other Game was something I always enjoyed. On occasion I find myself standing around in WAR wishing I could go gather things while everything was locked down by a city fight, T2 nights, or Dungeon run evenings. It would also give me something to do when I'm on the phone and can't really focus on killing players in the face(tm), healing killers, or beating up scripted PVE dungeon mobs/bosses. Chasing crafting mats, things to auction off, and fishing for temporary buff items is something I'd like to do in Warhammer. It beats standing in Altdorf/Reikwald growing plants watching the ADD bunny hoppers bounce around. :)

I understand that will never happen here. But if it did, I would happily collect stuff while zenning out to good music. I'd still be active in RVR of course.

Looking forward to something new.

The Warhammer forums & blogs are are lit up like a Christmas Tree over the bits and pieces of "RVR Pack" news. While the general handling of the release info could have been better it's great to see news about the games future coming out. Happily, there does look to be a future!

It sounds like one of my Warhammer wishes are coming true. I think. Sort of. Details are a bit vague. Skaven will be playable in some form or another. Mythic has said more about how they won't work (you won't be able to level them from t1 for example) then how they will work. They wn't be the third faction miracle some of us have been hoping for. But it does look like we'll get to play Skaven somehow. Perhaps they'll be similar to LOTRO monster-play. I hope it's a bit deeper than that. I'd at least like to name my minion Crayven. I'd also like to be able to gear him up in some manner.

We'll also have another 20 rr levels to play. Craythur misses the color purple so that's all well and good. It does raise some concerns...

Craythur's Craw: Dungeon Lockout Timers

And now for something completely different.

In keeping with my grumpy reputation (I'm roleplaying! Really! lol) here's a Warhammer Mechanic I find difficult to swallow. Dungeon Lock Out Timers. Specifically, lock out timers for instances that are not end game instances.

Given the gear gap between fresh forties and long time veterans would it really be game breaking to let folks kill Crypt/Tunnel bosses once every 24 hours? Once every 48 hours? You still have to be lucky enough for your class drop to, er, drop. Some of us have better luck with that than others. *mutters into his ale mug*

It would be much easier for our Family to help each other get those greater wards if we could run these instances more often. Sigmar knows Craythur needs nothing from Crypts & Tunnels. I'd be glad to help run these for other folks however. Why can't I help do that more than once per week?

Lost Vale could due with shorter lock outs as well. That would free us from the tyranny of once per week lock outs and help more folks get sexy Dark Promise gear...

A Warm Welcome in the Nick of Time

My return to WAR brought me to Phoenix Throne thanks to The Cotcast (now Multiplaying) crew. A planned server wise T2 Dwarf vs Greenskins convinced me to play here even though the podcast folks moved away from the game before I reactivated my account.

This time around I was on my own. I had no friends to socialize with, no guild, and no real plan other than to see what had changed and try the game from another faction. I rolled Craythur and hit the ground running. I had decided to play a healer again to ensure I would have some group utility. I enjoy helping the folks around me so it was a no brainer. There was only three or four other people in the starting zone. They weren't talking or interested in grouping. So it was me and my runes against the invading Greenskins.

Mere moments into Craythur's first day I experienced a great joy. The massive cannon went off and all the NPC dwarves cheered it's name. "Helga!" I was floored. It may seem a small thing to the rest of you. For me, all the love and joy the designers put into the Dwarf Greenskin zones and the game in general was hammered home to me with that one atmospheric bit of code...

From David to Goliath and back to David again.

From David to Goliath and back to David again. Or: Northrends charms could not hold me long.

I had canceled my WAR account and retired my squig herder. I then caved into pear pressure (much of it from my wife) and returned to Warcraft. The timing of Wrath of the Lich King was no accident I'm sure. It was perfectly positioned to steal the thunder from Warhammer and devour anyone on the fence. Whether this was great timing on Blizzards part or a spectacular blunder by EA is perhaps irrelevant.

Northrend, the new continent at the center of the new WoW expansion, was visually stunning. The new heroic Death Knight character was uber-fun, and it's starting zone sported a revolutionary "zomg phasing" progression. Multiple instances of varying sizes, extended character progression, new skills, further crafting, gear, spells, and more were all part of the package. The expansion was polished as all get out. Wrath of the Lich King was pretty exciting all in all. There was plenty to do. But I would sometimes find myself staring at yet another stunning vista, players flying through the sky on dragons, and feel a stab of sadness for good old Warhammer...

War Was everywhere! Or riding the wave of hype, expectation, and good will.

What do I say about War's launch? I look back on those days with bittersweet memories. I rolled destruction on Uthuan with some friends from Warcraft. That sounds simple enough. There was plenty of hand ringing over which faction to play. In the end, we went with side that excited us most visually. Picking a server was no easy task. Everytime we had a consensus the server list changed or news from a huge zerg guild made us doubt our decisions. Some of us had beta/headstart status which affected our planning. In the end, we over thought things. Gotta love gamers. :)

After months of anticipation the big day came. War was Everywhere!

Thinking back, it's not all the bugs and strange development decisions that plagued the game I remember most. It's the excitement of seeing the Warhammer world in a new way. There were people everywhere. EVERYWHERE. How can I begin to communicate how cool that was? Nearly every T1 PQ was being played. Not by individuals mind you, but by groups. Warbands...

Craythur's first blog or How I became a Bemused Gamer

So I thought I'd give this blog thing a try.

Where to start eh? I suppose a first blog should be some sort of introduction. It's only fair that readers know just what sort of fractured mind is behind all this. Let's run with that. If you read this and are remotely interested in reading more let me know in game.

How I became a Bemused Gamer by Craythur.

A group of friends introduced me to my first MMO World of Warcraft two months after it's launch. I played it happily for a few years. I was an end game raider before ZG, AQ, and the original Naxx came along. That meant my Paladin spent far too many hours cleansing fiery debuffs in MC. The raid group I was a member of was quite good. We were well geared and very accomplished at not standing in "The Thing" various PVE bosses would throw at us. I was not L33t, but I played in the company of L33ts. I greatly enjoyed the old Alterac Valley battles prior to the changes that led opposing forces to ride by one another waving on their way to fight enemy NPC's...
