Game Summary:

Rebuild a World

Your epic story does not require you to raid a dungeon day after day, hoping the right item will drop if you kill enough bosses: your story begins with survival. All the world was almost wiped out when the Veilstorms tore across the land, changing and breaking it apart. You live on, to rebuild and reconquer what remains.

In Camelot Unchained, a player-driven economy of shops and bazaars brings you into the immersive world. There are no real-world money shops for your hero to take the easy path. You must consult a master craftsman, who can create items as powerful as the harsh RvR world demands. You must win your Realm’s trust, and earn the right to wield a mighty blade by equally mighty deeds. Drawing on ancient folklore from Arthur to Yggdrasil, the world is alive with strange creatures and stranger folk to meet; but your story rarely includes treasure simply found by the roadside.

This is Your Game

Our RvR game puts the power of choice in your hands. Camelot Unchained never tries to monetize you, never slows down, and won’t be “free-to-play.” We respect your commitment to a subscription-based game; in return, you won’t see thinly-veiled grabs for more money. Everything you need to succeed in Camelot Unchained requires skill and effort, not an open wallet. You will see your choices change your fate.

Camelot Unchained is not just about the battle between three Realms; it is a world filled with rich lore, ancient yet written anew. While dungeon raids are not part of your daily ritual, you can fall deep into The Depths™, a creation from the mind of studio co-founder Mark Jacobs, which draws inspiration from the mythos of H.R. Giger and H.P. Lovecraft. It is a truly twisted place, a dark abyss that lives and breathes evil. If you dare to explore, know this: even after death, a player’s soul can haunt and hunt other adventurers.

RvR on a Massive Scale? Inconceivable!

Here’s where co-founder Andrew Meggs works his magic. If the world didn’t run well, RvR would mean small-scale battles, and even those battles would look like stuttering slideshows on anything other than top-of-the-line gaming systems. We are building our own engine, designed to handle the demands of Camelot Unchained’s epic RvR. Andrew’s primary focus is on the size and speed of battle, so the three mighty Realms can fight in a vast, open world with RvR conflict to match. This game won’t be instanced, it won’t have oversized weapons or pauldrons, and we’re not into the “One server to rule them all!” thing. Instead, expect old-school servers, where you can take pride in your Realm and your war-torn world.

Building an MMORPG The Right Way

Over the coming months of development, anyone who chooses to become a Backer will see the impact of our efforts to build our tech the right way.We are building a game and engine from the foundation upwards. While that means we aren’t as focused on refined graphics, we’ve created a whole lot of interesting, useful, and unique tech. That’s what is truly important to us: that the game works well. That’s how we repay the trust shown to us by our Backers: We do things the right way from the start. Build the world you believe in, fight for supremacy, and support Camelot Unchained!

Tuatha Dé Danann

The Realm of the Tuatha Dé Danann strives to become one with nature. They revere the forest for its fierce beauty and its unyielding grip on life. The forest is more than the home of the Tuatha Dé Danann; it is their deep-rooted mother, their broad-boughed father, and their protector. Beneath the green-on-green canopy of the ever-living forest, dark secrets and powerful mysteries are hidden, which every member of the Realm will fight to defend. The wise and enigmatic Lugh leads the Tuatha Dé Danann to blossoming power, expanding the reach of limitless life. Some may jest that the Tuatha Dé Danann are foolish tree-lovers and frivolous fairies, but in the Realm of the Forest they know the truth: The world will be fierce and beautiful when the Realms are united under forest halls.

Silverhands

The Silverhands have a long tradition of tremendous sacrifice. When they come of age, each member of this race gives up their right arm as a sign of dedication to the Realm.

Hamadryads

Hamadryads defend the Great Protectors of the forest, the mighty oak trees that drink in the destructive power of the Veilstorms like water. In all the Realms, the Hamadryads are the closest to the forest, for they are part of it themselves.

Luchorpán

Small and often underestimated, the Luchorpán are natural-born tricksters, masters of misdirection and illusion. They believe that lies can reveal the truth, that a person’s hidden nature is revealed when they are the victim of a prank.

Tuatha

Tall, proud, and filled with the strength of the forest, the Tuatha Dé Danann grow branching horns on the crown of their heads. They are the defenders of the woods, and the keepers of its deepest secrets.

Bean Sidhe

The Bean Sidhe are a ghostly race, who float rather than walk upon the earth, and whose heads often hover above their bodies. They are mournful creatures, born of terrible tragedy in the lands of the Tuatha Dé Danann.

Fir Bog

Known as the Caretakers, the Fir Bog protect the bogs and swamps with giant-sized might. Some say that dark secrets lie deep down in the peat and moss, and each Fir Bog hides a deep mental connection to every other Caretaker.

Camelot Unchained is one of the games Aiden & I have begun to watch closely.  We are especially interested in how they will handle combat, targeting and large scale tactical battles, as well as personal character development.  The concept of the world sounds rich with interesting lore, and crafting and cooperation GSCH style sounds to be encouraged and a key component here.  We eagerly await more info and testing, but if they develop the RvR to truly field the numbers they say they plan in massive flowing battles, this could be a great fit for a GSCH community.

Unless it has changed you can only get exp from RVR , you gain no exp from killing pve mobs, or atleast thats what I read . so if you want to lvl your character you have to kill players in RvR .

Will have to see how it works out since a lot can change before launch.

Dirk, I believe you also level up by taking objectives.  Not necessarily just killing players. I've taken many objectives where nobody is home. Still a long way off well see how it flushes out?

I am  ok with earning exp to lvl purely in RvR wether it be  the kill quest, scout, capture , etc repeatable like we have in ESO, and we had in Warhammer, DAOC .

However a lot of the guild I think would like the game more if it was like DAOC and warhammer , where there is pve/RvR aspect to it instead of just RvR .

Will have to see how it develops, nothing is ever set in stone as we saw with ESO a lot of changes happen between Alph and release . :D

Wow, I had high hopes for this one but if there is no PvE content or PvE leveling then I will have a problem with this.  I enjoy both PvE and RvR and I would be sad if there is only one type of game-play and not both.

Aiden, I would be really interest to see if the stick by it. RvR games have historically not done so well and thats one of the reasons they had to Kickstart the project. VC folk will not invest in a game where RvR is the focus. It's just not profitable. That said I give Marc Jacobs some serious brownie points for saying "screw you guys I'm doing it anyways." Innovation happens when people dare to challenge those preconceived notions. This can be a major breakthrough that opens doors for future mmo's or it could be a huge failure which closes doors to any chance of funding for RvR centric MMO's. I really hope he knocks it out of the park but cutting off all PvE might be a critical mistake.  We'll have to see how it all works first. You never know we could be making broad assumptions that are highly inaccurate. Until we get hands on we won't know for sure.

Well, from what I understand, he was also burnt by Games Workshop and EA for WAR.  I know Games Workshop was a limiting factor for WAR's success, they were more interested in keeping control of their IP, just like Lucas Arts was for SWG.  Not absolving EA of any blame, but GW... yea.  I kind of feel bad for Mark on that one.

I think that no PvE content will be a mistake for this game, however.  Why?  Historical facts:  Red 5 tried it with Firefall, which was originally a Tribes-style of game, but they could not generate enough interest without adding in PvE, which eventually caused them to cut out all PvP until just this past year, but yea... "no PvE" has been tried in a persistent world and it did not work.

I think that RvR can still be a focus, especially if they incorporate the PvE and RvR all into one area.  That would be a game that would work, IMO.

Just a general observation....

Women, in general, tend to be more cooperative players, and if a mutually beneficial solution can be had, they will work hard to make it happen.  PvE and story-driven content appeals (in general) more to women than persistent warring and raiding.

Not including PvE will put off a growing market in the MMORPG genre.

Reading through some of their documents it appears each realm will have a safe zone. There will also be some dragons in the game which aren't player characters. I've seen concept art for a water, fire, and earth dragon so far. Quite honestly I think it's too soon to tell exactly where this title will end up. But if you have questions for Mark Jacobs speak them now and I can see if he will answer them in my interview with him.

Of all the potential seeds in the survey this is the one that really interests me. I love the lore, the factions and races sound fascinating (including a perfect faction for us!), and it seems like Mark and CSE are trying some very interesting and fun ideas. I somewhat second the concern about lack of PvE, though I suspect that the Depths may evolve into a more PvE-centric area (this would be consistent with the Becoming stories that I've read so far). The overall main focus being on RvR sounds great to me, since I love WvW in GW2 (and really wasn't much of a PvP person before that - I prefer cooperation to competition but having both seems to be even better). I'm very excited to see how this develops and I'm considering becoming a "Builder" of some variety to get into beta (or even alpha) - if CU becomes a likely choice for a new chapter I'll probably make the plunge, though I'm not sure about the timeline for such things.

My question to Mark would be: "You mention that we will be fighting against the Depths as well as in the Depths. Is this a potential avenue for the introduction of PvE content?"

After some careful thought, I'm going to throw my support behind Camelot Unchained.  IMHO, its the direct descendant of where both Gaiscioch and my Waelwulfas first planted their roots, so I think that its going to be something special to both Fog and I, more so than any other game out there.  It just makes sense on both a logical and emotional level.

I don't know if we'll actually go there but I do know It would be a shame for a MMO to be babased on the very lore we were created for and us not have a hand in it somehow. Even if we don't branch it at least we contributed to its success.

I have to say I'm really hoping this one turns out.  The lore, factions and large scale RvR all seem tailored for GSCH.  That said, I agree with Ezsme, Llewbelyn and Sekkerhund above.  Women in general, and many guys who are more tactics/strat oriented, tend to go for more cooperative in games.  RvR can satisfy, but cooperative crafting, resource gathering and journeying form teamwork and friendships.  PvE, in other words, is a place to form your character, test out skills and squad level strategies in small teams before taking it to larger RvR battles, and helps foster character bonding and game immersion which can be vital to game loyalty in the long run.

I would sincerely like to pass this on to Mark; consider adding in enough PvE for journeying - not necessarily questing and not personal storyline that is tied to pre-determined linear progression - but open journeying thru which the player themselves determines his/her own story thru imagination and develops skills and tactics accordingly.  Tie it crafting, specific resources, which allows those of us in the crafty/PvE bent to contribute to those in guild who prefer not to PvE.  For instance, a few npcs that may simply mention something in passing that leads to a rarer resource guarded by a PvE mob that reflects a later resource in RvR guarded by the enemy.  Something that a small team could go for based on various tactics, not just the boring overwhelm with numbers zerg.  This is something I think a lot of us would love to see - a game mechanic done well enough that GSCH as a force could split into small raids to work together to take objectives, as well as come together for large raid sieges/warfare.  This also allows those who do not always play in prime time zones to contribute thru smaller raids in preparation for the more prime time run larger raids.

I've been watching this game and I'm interested in seeing how it develops. Having some sort of PvE will be a critical factor in deciding to play though. I need my quiet play time! Also, as I play mostly in off peak times, so I need to have things to do that don't require being in a large group, preferably some solo activities for when there just isn't enough people around.

Well, once I get my RL in order, ok... *if*... I'm going to try to reach out to Mark and his team, see if I can't get involved somehow.

I've decided enough of this game bouncing crap, its time for Sekkerhund and his Waelwulfas to go back home.  I just need to reground myself, I seriously can't deal with this aimless direction anymore, always hoping that the next game will be what I'm looking for.

It won't be, it will never be.

So, I'm just going back to board, don't care if it seems "too late" or not.  Time for new beginnings.

I think I might be okay with this, depending upon what exactly is involved in crafting and such.  If they made that side of things interesting, and put in just a little PvE for crafting style characters... and made it such that most of the money was earned PvP side... and made you pretty much make a character one or the other, then maybe.  Otherwise it will just be everybody and their friend of a cousin's friend's uncle will be a max crafter again, and there will be no player driven economy of crafting, and it will just be a continual PvP game where you go craft a little.

That is where I would suggest feedback be given toward a PvE experience within the game.  They can even make difficult encounters for combat or other tests of skill/strategy/dedication in the material gathering part of the game for PvE, and these can be fairly simple in the world or dungeon style setups.  Of course, crafting should require really good materials for really good stuff, and be a challenge in itself under this setup.

Firefall started out as a PVP match game, very similar to Tribes.  They needed a lobby system, so based on some feedback, R5 implemented a little lobby area.  Players wanted something to do while waiting, as well as a means of upgrading gear (ie crafting system) so R5 decided to do that, and dropped crafting stations in the Lobby area.  There was also a request for something to hit on, so R5 added a couple of areas with NPCs to fight, while waiting on matches.

That became popular with Alpha testers, so they started asking for some PvE areas.  R5 took a look at their design, decided to go 'back to board' and redesign it into a hybrid MMO.  At one point during Closed Beta, it was actually a purely PvE game, then shortly before release, they started implementing large PVP maps.

TL;DR:  Based on Alpha testing feedback, the game went from a match-style MOBA to a hybrid (PVP/PVE) MMO.  So, yes, feedback does have a direct effect on the design of a game, especially in its early stages.  You just have to ... give it to them.  :)

I for one would love to see a full cooperative efort from us on this one where our rvr teams recover resources from the war and bring them back to base while the PvE site gathers and constructs our very own guild city. I'd love to have the pvp centric guard our non pvp centric and use each others strengths to our advantage. The trick will be finding some allies to cooperate with us so we have some night defense. Well see how the whole system works but I have a feeling night capping will have n interesting spin.

I'd like to clarify some things on Camelot Unchained.  I am new to the family here but have been around since the launch of Darkage of Camelot.  I have also been a backer for Camelot Unchained for some time and am part of the alpha testing.  I can give info on open information about it.

While it is a RVR focused PVP game it does have a large PVE aspect in it but it is very different from other MMOs.  CU will have an actual Crafter Class, the Crafter will progress differently than other classes by doing things that its class is designed for.  The Crafter will have 3 big roles.

(1) Gear: all gear in this game comes ONLY form the crafters, there is no gear drops, raidng, or quest line gear rewards. Crafters will explore, gather, farm, mine, hunt, salvage, and kill pve mobs for crafting materials.  Equiping gear will be based off of character stats not levels, so an exp: as a fighter uses a sword and raises strength, the higher strength lets them uses better swords.

(2) Building: All structures are built in this game by crafters.  this goes from houses to roads, mines, farms, lumber mills, towers and so on.  Your side can burn down an enemy keep, then start construction of a village there, add walls and upgrade it to a keep, if your realm can hold it for a few days it can be upgraded to la large fortress, all while many crafters work togeather to improve it.

(3) Combat Engineer: Crafters will be right in the center of the battle building siege weapons for your realm aswell as excelling at using them compared to other classes.  they will build traps as well as trying to deperatly repair walls and keep doors before they break open.

For the other classes progression will come for realm vs realm activities. Not just PVP fighting.  Protecting crafters as they head into dangerous lands for resources or protecting caravans as they moves materials to a far off town, there are other things aswell.  if you remember Darkness Falls from DAOC there will be something similiar in this game which can be looked at as a PVE / PVP prize to control.

I would suggest you really check out this game and not write it off right away, it will also have a very unique Magic system, Combat system,  Progression system (never ending), and Gear system.

It seems interesting and unique to me and I would be willing to give it a go.  The only thing I would be concerned about if there are places where I could park my avi and have some "peace", LOL.  PVE or PVP, if i can't just park in some town and organize my gear etc I would get really annoyed quick.  This happened to me when The Secret World launched and every single town was overrun with NPC Zombies in the starter zone 24/7 (they have fixed this since then).  In terms of the references to gender, I don't really think that's the case, I argue its more an age thing.. Younger players enjoy "pwning" others more regardless of gender. Old folks like me enjoy the more cooperative elements, story line, pve etc. . ;)

I wish I had some money to "back" this, then be able to get involved with its development, but right now its just impossible.  Therefore, unfortunately, I'll have to watch from sidelines until life swings around back in my favor... which may not be any time soon.  :\

I do like the Crafting aspect, its an interesting and possibly innovative design, but its been my experience that when players mention "PvE", they are talking about dungeons and boss encounters, no really so much about general non-PvP content.

As most know, Dungeons aren't my bag anyway, so a game without them wouldn't phase me in the slightest, but to a lot of gamers, its a critical part of a game's design.  The quality of that content has been known to make or break games, too, so its not really something that should be easily dismissed.

That said, after reading the details about the roll of Crafting in CU, I have to say that adding in Dungeons/Boss Encounters would adversely change the intended design of the game.  Mostly due to the fact that players who dungeon and raid, do it for the gear ... which would not be dropping.  Not to mention, they always want a gear progression system, where dungeons and raids become progressively harder and require constant gear upgrades and progression to complete... you know, the usual.

Now, that isn't something that should necessarily be dismissed, since a crafty MMO designer can figure out some alternatives to "gear drops".  I've seen some games introduce crafting materials that can only be found in dungeons/raids, but those haven't really worked out too well, since those types of players want the actual gear loot, not the parts to make it.  However, there might be a happy balance that hasn't been figured out yet.

So, it will be interesting to watch the development process,  especially in a game that's financed by its players, rather than corporate and venture investors.  As I said above about Firefall, sometimes original ideas morph into something unexpected, or sometimes even more generic.  Games are businesses,  businesses have to make money and consumer demand steers it.

Sekkerhund....  if you do get the oppurtunity to back the game i would definately do it now and it can be done for $35.  So you would be getting the game for alot cheaper now compared the $60 it will probably cost at launch.

A few things on the game.

Progression:  Your actions progress you, while its PVP, building or assisting other players.  you are doing things for your realm and your king and he rewards you at the end of the day with stat progression and gold.  You cannot grind mobs for exp or do quests for exp. Instead of levels your stats raise by doing the actions that use those stats.  So the play type you focus on is how you progress your character. This system will slow down the further you go but it will never end.  You will never hit that "im finished wall"  There is always a reason to keep playing because your character will always get stronger.  As opposed to gear progression from other games.

Also dont look at  high end gear as the hard thing to get, the crafters can make it, its just hard to get your stats high enough for you to actually  be able to use it.  It may take you a year of fighting with swords to get your strength and sword skill high enough for you to use that high end strength sword.  it a time and doing system, not a getting lucky rare drop system

There is no main story line, What you realm is doing is the story as you go,  your realm is trying to reassemble Camelot in thier image, but the other realms will always be trying to do teh same.

TY Pirhana7 for telling us more about the things you could.  Aiden & I are with Fog on this re: our RvR and PvE teams supporting each other and that sounds pretty much the direction the game is taking.  That is exciting, and especially for the GSCH family this could be an excellent fit with everyone being able to have fun and show our strength as a gaming family with cooperative diversity.

If crafting, gathering, exploring, and building is encouraged and needed for support and success, and RvR guarding, sieging, and raiding is needed for support/success - then sign us up because if done well this IS a new take on the old MMORPG formula and exactly what we've been looking for.

Your Welcome Aislinne,

I can see this being the perfect game for GSCH for the reasons you and Fog said and my memory of you guys from DAOC and Warhammer.  Hopefully most people here give it a chance and dont put it off just because it doesn't have the traditional PVE system from other games.  In the past when joining new games i have just looked for old DAOC player guilds but they always faded fast.  I think i will be very happy playing with you guys.

I am also glad you guys are aiming the way of the Tuatha De Danann because thats what i plan on going since i am a HIB for life :)

While this is still early in development i think i will be a Crafter and make gear for the guild and be the combat engineer right there in battle setting up siege weapons and trying to keep the Gates and Walls repaired in keep defenses.

I will keep you guys up to date on the game.  They are just now putting the building system in so hopefully i will get to try it this week and give you guys info that i am allowed to.

I will also probably jump back into Elder Scrolls Online once the next major update for the Champion System in put in.

BTW, @ Aislinne, That is something a lot of the sandbox-style or PVP focused titles are moving toward, it seems.  I know for sure that several games are working toward that.

As for the skill part, that really depends upon a cap on the character strength progression.  Given that you are supposedly always getting stronger (per Pirhana7's post) you essentially end up with a game that favors those with stupid amounts of free time.  That, to me, sounds dreadful.  I much prefer a system where your character has a stat/skill cap, but where the continuation of play is in doing things, rather than some boost to your power like gear.  That is why I really was excited about some of what was going on with LiF... the game has a grind to max your skills more than anything, bases everything you improve on what you do, and then has a cap that is somewhat flexible (total stat/skill points, which you can change at will in the game world just by doing *there's a lock function to keep you from getting the wrong stuff going up or down.*)  Well, that and the physics model combat as per Mount and Blade.

Now, I do believe a game where you get boosts based upon acting to serve the interests of your factional leader sounds better than many other setups... I just dread the thought of those with 15 hours of playtime a day getting continually more powerful from a larger reward set, and leaving casual players to feel secondhand.  It may not work out that way, which would be nice enough... it is just what I see that pops to mind as the possible big problem within the system.  If we could find out more, that would be great (because I guarantee you we have a lot of players who won't be spending all day on, and would be very unhappy to be second rated just because they have lives outside of the gameplay!)  Is there any info on this that anybody knows?

@Jairone,   The progression never ending progression will be done very carefully in Camelot Unchained,  the further you go the more it slows down.  They want younger characters to always be able to compete and be able to grow faster until they get further and hit that slow down progression.  Darkage of Camelot was a good example of this you hit max level then start earning realm ranks and making your character stronger but it really slowed down the further you went but people kept building characters for years.  that is system they are going for, you always feel like your progressing even if it is just a single stat point you gain after a week.

Also they want you playing the game and not looking at what you need to progress.  you don't get rewarded on the spot, you wait till the next gaming day and you get a report from the King telling you what you increased progression wise and why, also your gold reward and maybe some other bonus.  there is also a report for every player telling what major accomplishes happen and what guilds succeded at what.  Also this system is designed to counter that problem of the hardcore people staying on 24/7 and getting so far ahead.  During that 1 gaming day what you gain slows down the longer you play so they arent getting that much more progression, just making more $.  Playing every day for shorter duration will progress you the most.

@Jairone  Personally i always hated hitting that character cap "I'm finished wall"  Its like well it doesnt matter what i do, i am as strong as possible and cant improve my character, yes there is love of the game but people always want to be working towards a better character.  And thats why i am excited for this system.  You have a very good point about the other side problem but I think they will have this game perfectly centered in the middle where new players will always be able to compete and catch up for the most part but let those experienced long term characters keep gaining just slightly enough over time to feel like they are accomplishing becoming stronger and rewarded.

I get you Pirhana... I just think there can be other ways to flesh out characters as well.  I don't mind the growing in power as a character nearly as much as gear inflation, but I also find myself growing to like the idea of specialization and long term growth in terms of what I want out of an MMO.  I guess it might just be where I am going personally... I just like the idea of an MMO being social, without requiring you to always spend every moment together, so in that regard this sounds somewhat cool.
I agree completely there must be some avenue to character growth, and for many people that is expressed in power.  I am not sure that power must always be personal stats, however, and feel that this is perhaps the greatest weakness in the MMORPG gaming areas... of course that is likely something a little more resource consuming to work on.  I also think that sometimes the character being able to refine their stats to what they really want could be a nice path to see explored more than the current 'Eh, you can do it a little' that a few mmos have bothered with!

Anyway, have a great night, fun discussing this with ya!

Waelwulfas was obviously Midgard, and we ate hibbies for lunch, though the luries were more like snacks.  Day 2 after launch, we owned the Hibernia Frontier Gate on Gawaine server for several hours, just to make a statement.  :D  Believe me, if we could have gotten past that gate, we would have, too.  :D  (well, there was a way, but we took pride in not needing hacks or exploits to win, so we never did)

So heh, nah, I can't see Gaiscioch siding with Vikings any more than I can see Waelwulfas siding with the Irishthemedwhatevers.  (brainfart)

@Thyth not sure if you played Darkage of Camelot but its RVR was very different than PVP from every other MMO.  I do not care for PVP in most MMos but RVR was the best expeirence i ever had.   Camelot Unchained is using this same system, It uses many things to help your realm besides just fighting enemy players.  There will be plenty of PVE lore and creatures, the only difference is progression comes from RVR activies and all gear comes from crafters as well as building everything.  I would atleast give it a chance when it comes out.

So they came out with the first class and how the skill system will work in Camelot Unchained.  Each class will have 4 or 5 paths they can follow, dabble in or just stay with the core mechanic of the class.  but you are limited to what all you can do becaus ethey want choices to matter.

The first class is a Viking Warrior called the Dengr.  here is an example of the Paths he gave:

Thor = Hammer, heavy armor, medium range abilities,  decent defense and lots of shout interupts.

Odin = Spear, medium armor, long range abilities, offensive, less defense

Freyr = Sword, medium  armor, close range heavier damage, less defense

Sol = Shield, heavy armor, less range and damage, heavy defense and could posssible duel wield  'attack" shields

Axe path is being worked on.

He siad each realm will have its owns races and its own classes.  Each class will have its own Paths.  So that is alot of building options

TY for the update, Pirhana7.  This is getting more interesting as it goes. :)  They have definitely put some thought into the class system and it's exciting to see they have matched abilities to the pantheon rather well.  I really like that crafting and building will matter, as well as the RvR for defense and possibly resources.  If you choose the 'wrong path' for your play style or just end up not liking it, will there be a way to 'retrait/repath' within the main class, or will you have to kill the toon and start completely over?  Do you know how many toons they will allow for the altoholics among us that may want to try different paths?

Thanks again. Your input has really helped answer some questions and further sparked our enthusiasm.

@Aislinne  He said the Paths are there to compliment play styles.  You don't have to follow a path but if you choose to, you  just meet requirements of things associated with a path and you gain skill in it.  He said in some cases the path may come to you because of your play style.  You cannot learn everything from every path.  It is not known yet how much you can learn total from the multiple paths.  There will come a point when you start to max out your path skills.  if you want to learn new things or change your path you just simply start to learn the new path and your oldest path skills will start to be forgotten so there is no need to start a new character.  But this switch wont be instant and wont simply be a "skill reset"  He really wants choices to matter and you to spend time working towards your build and learning it so because of this there will be no instant skill respecs except in the case of them having to modify / nerf skills in future patches, in those cases instant skill respects will be granted.  he said because of this time skill learning process and no instant respects it will also help avoid FOTM (flavor of the month builds) where people learn of something effective and switch to it right away.

Not sure how many character slot there will be or will be if you buy the game at launch.  I do know that the lowest current backer tier ($35) says it comes with 1 bonus character slot while the most expensive backer tier ($425) comes with 3 bonus character slots.  But those more expensive tiers also come with 3 years of free subs (prob $15 month)so that pays for itself twice over if you do play 3+ years.  Currently they plan on having oldschool servers like DOAC had.  if you want to play on a different realm you have to go to a different server.  he really wants realm pride to come back.

@Scarydrew There will be the "Depths"  This is very similiar to Darkness Falls from DAOC.  The difference with the Depths is that the entrance is never in the same spot, An entrance opening will just randomly appear on the map at random locations and times.

So far we are not sure what exactly the rewards of this place will be.  the current assumption is for privlages, special crafting materials or may some kind of items.  But Mark Joacobs has made it very clear on multiple videos and Q&As that ALL gear will come from Crafters and ALL progresssion / leveling will come from RVR.  He said that when you see someone with a certain strength and title it is because he got it threw RVR not from going to teh safety of PVE questing.  he also wants to avoid the "fastest way to progress PVP or PVE problem like we see in ESO and GW2.

He has said that RVR progression is not just killing enemy players but helping your realm in many ways.  Some ways will be somewhat PVE like.  Example: Protecting a crafters resource caravan as it travels on the RVR map (Crafters need to move materials to be able to build towns and keeps).  Not just from enemy players but maybe enemy guards and PVE creatures like Trolls or wolves might be in the way.  The king will reward you with progression and gold if you protect this caravan.

Pirhana,

So, he is saying that all forms of player competition, not just player killing player, are PvP? Are we finally going to get resource competition, market manipulation / economic warfare, territorial control and all the other forms of inter-(-personal, -cultural, -territorial and -national) politics might make it into the game? I am very sad that I have yet to find a Fantasy RPG with PvP beyond 'murder the other fool'.

Then, I have to ask, what tools are we (the players) going to be given to police ourselves. Remember there are other crimes than just murder. Griefers do more than just kill friendlies/same flag bearers. So even if there are no friendly fire issues there are always other reasons to need to police the population.

@Snazz:  I can't say for sure about CU... but some other games are tackling those issues right now.

For instance, there is a huge discussion going on with dealing with griefers in Life is Feudal.  The justice system in game has already seen some work, such as:
1.  Your claimed areas are YOURS.  No looting of your storage.  Nobody tearing stuff down or building stuff without your express in game permission.  This also extends to areas under a guild claim *limited to the actual town area, which can be rather large* by guild access.  You may still be killed and looted by an intruder, however they will suffer higher penalties for doing so, and they still can't get your storage stuff.  Plus, you respawn right there, and can try to chase them down with a shiny set of armor and weapons they never knew you had!
2.  Attack mode changes your setup for a bit.  No longer do those hitting you suffer alignment drops when you are in attack mode.  This lasts for a little while when attack mode is dropped... meaning that if you walk up and hit somebody, thinking you can grief, you get knocked out and it doesn't hurt anybody doing it.  *Murder and looting still cause some loss, which is under discussion in the game forums.*  This combined with the armor and weapon advantages (and relatively easy crafting requirements for basic weapons and armor) helps make sure you won't have a bunch of nearly naked people running around griefing... they will suffer for it and not really gain anything.
In addition, it has been mentioned that murder of griefers via wild animal is a non-issue for the game developers, so if you hurt them some, then lead them into a few wolves (which are decently deadly foes to somebody in lower end gear) and they die... oh well, boo hoo for them.  *Personal favorite so far, I played for a bit on a server that was fully pvp allowed... and kited somebody right into bear territory.  Watching them get slammed down when I had them at half health was rather humorous (especially since they picked the fight trying to steal my stuff.)*
3.  Door locks are effectively being made such that only those owning the building can open it... although with permission settings so that you can have guilds set up to allow access to a given building for everyone.  This includes gates, so a simple wall can make it very difficult for griefers.  Especially since you can set your recall ability to a house in town.

The interesting thing is that there is talk about local law enforcement privledges.  In other words, you can set people who can flag a person as having broken a law in a number of severities, which could mean you want them to leave, or they are fair game to beat up and loot, to even fair game to kill and force a respawn elsewhere.  Given that the developers are very communicative with the people playing the alpha steam version... there is hope that this might become a reality.

I think that the systems so far as described with CU are likely flexible enough to give some measure of similar action to the playerbase... however since I am not sure about territory designation and who has authority it might be more difficult to add.  After all, if the griefers can deal with people unjustly by affecting laws anywhere... well, that doesn't help.  The entire design of LiF is based upon having things work well when you work together, while still allowing for bandit clans and competition (note, resources are varied, and trade is going to be pretty much required in the game... and many such resources do not respawn *anything that grows can be farmed up, such as trees growing over time, but minerals and metals are finite on the server.*)  I would think CU might do something similar, but I do not know yet.

Anyway, if you are interested at all, let me know in my LiF post I am starting (seeing if anybody wants a custom server for those in Gaiscioch to play on, unofficially.)

The only danger I see so far is how they will cater to the whiners that will always complain about PvP imbalance as soon as there is a iota of differenciation between them and other people.

What actually killed Warhammer Online is the 'perception of imbalance' rather than acutal imbalance.  From my discussion with the elders who played DaoC the 3d realm apparently did much to quell those problems, so I hope it will work there as well...

Personally I am 100% behind a RvR centric game...   Guild Wars 2 showed without a doubt that PvE and RvR are actually 2 different games.  You can pretend to integrate them into 1 package but in the end at one point people will invest in one or the other.

That said, I agree 100% with Ezme in that you need to satisfy all the different types of players and that includes the more social oriented players who don't want to be involved in PvP.  And here is where I think this game can really innovate.  RvR != PvP !!!    You can contribute (meanfully) to your realm without having to fight / kill other players...   But I feel that a RvR focused game's objective should be that every single player contribute to their realm.  You can't have that when people are 'dungeon crawling' in order to get the best loot for themselves or in order to unlock the next dungeon.  I see nothing wrong however with doing side quests that yields ressources for your realm or give an advantage to your realm.

Another thing I would add as well, is that those who want to contribute to their realm via a more PvE endevours should not be subjected to griefing from the natural PvP aspect that comes with RvR.  However and that would be my major point : the most meaningful rewards should come from a carefully constructed interaction between the PvE and PvP types players. This is what I believe this game is going to with the Builder types who will be in charge of both structure and siege.

What would be interesting is that if the Builders need to gather material by PvEing but then bring those mats to the RvR-PvP 'pits' in order to fully use them.  Protecting those Builders while they do their work would make the difference between victory or defeat.  And this is where all the major rewards would lie for both the PvPers and the PvEers of the game.

The only concern I would have, is that from what I hear, Builders constitue a single class.  They definately should not ! They should be an archetype just like Fighter - Mage - Healer and there should be at least 1 Builder class per realm.   While Builders can PvP, they are not suited for it.

Last thing : by their very nature, the Builder type should NOT have to spend to much time in the RvR-PvP pits/lake... Assuming this is where that game is going, then balacing their impact on the game while minimizing their interaction with pure PvP is going to be the challenge of that game

Whatever the permutations are, count me in...

C.U. later !!

@Snazz  Yes, it goes far past just killing enemy players.  You are rewarded threw RVR which is stuff that helps your realm in its ultimate goal to reassemble camelot in your realms image.  he also said he wants to get away from EXP watching.  you won't see or know your progress at the time, he wants you to just play the game and RVR.  The things you and your guild do in RVR will be rewarded each day by your realms king.  At the beginning of each gaming day you will get a report (newspaper)  It will show the status of teh world map and what major accomplishments guild and players did the previous day.  It will also show you your personal rewards like gold and how much you progressed your character.  Progression will be stat increased based on what your character did.  Other than health most stats will be gate ways to use stronger gear thus making you more powerful. (gear will not give + stats)

As for Policing, I am not sure how that system will work yet.

@Musclor  The 3way RVR system does have a self balancing mechanic that 1v1 like Warhammer did not have.  He will use the exact same system that he used in Darkage of Camelot which worked very well.  GW2 has problems because of its multiple small map setups as well as the map design and map resets.  ESO has major problesm because population imbalance and campaign (server) transfers.  CU will be oldschool like DAOC.  Many servers that are perminate character places where you are always with the same allies against the same enemies.  this promotes realm pride and getting to know your enemy

A massive triangular world map.  Each realm has its capital city with a small safe zone at each corner.  The rest of the map and land is what each side is pushing to control.  The center of the map is the "old destroyeed Camelot" that each side wants to rebuild for themselves.  This map will be the whole game world and will be massive.  Your small safe zone will have the basic crafting materials, the further you go towards the enemy capital cities the better the crafting materials you will find for your realm.

The Crafter class......  First know that all the combat classes can do basic crafting like repairs, making arrows, and basic gathering.  The Crafter class is its own class because it has alot of respinsibilities. Beside making all the gear in teh game and doing advanaced gathering, mining, and farming.  And building every structure in the game He said at no pint will this class have a simple boring activity and their will always be stuff to do.  think of the Crafter Class as a Combat Engineer.  It will be right in the center of battles buildiing/repairing and running siege weapons.  The Crafter class has its own role in PVP combat as it will out perform other classes at running seige weapons.  This includes targetting enemy players and killing them.  he really wants other classes to take it apon themselves to protect these very important crafters.  the crafters will basically be what causes your side to win or lose in massive seiges.

He wants you to be in a dangerous world, you are always at risk, not just from enemy players but from the environment and the viel storm that ripped apart the lands, changed everything and destoyeed the old Camelot City.  Being on the lands and territory your side controls will always be much safer and especially being within your towns and fortress built by your crafters.

Here is a chart that shows the different packages.

Package comparison chart.

I am also excited about this game and decided to buy a builders package. The chart also shows which packs have alpha access. As far as Pre Alpha (PAT) I think you would have to be a founder for that. Maybe Pirhana can shed more light on that.

The items are most likely linked to housing.  *Notice that much of what is given as rewards for higher tiers is related to housing.*  Granted, this is just a guess, but it would make sense.

Here is a Link to all their videos https://www.youtube.com/user/CityStateGames/videos City State Games is being very transparent about the entire development process. A lot of these videos do contain repeat information. That said if you want to get a good idea of some of the systems they plan to implement I would check out these videos:

Stat System

Magic System

Combat

Crafting

RvR Map

Progression System

UI Modding

I hope these help people get a better idea of what City State is trying to do with Camelot Unchained. I can say this much. This game is definitely not gonna be for everyone. They seem t be targeting fans of old table top/MUD games. Something people are going to have to accept with this game is that "Choices Matter" and you will not be able to do it all with your character. It's a idea that we have not seen in MMOs in a very long time and it will be very interesting to see how this game's target audience reacts to it.

Just watch these videos and see what you think. Some of this stuff sounds far out to me, but personally it's something I think this genre of gaming needs.

Something to remember is that this game is still not even in alpha. There is still a ton of work that needs to be done and City State has made is very clear that they will delay the launch of Camelot Unchained until they are confident that they have produced a product that their backers will be more than satisfied with.

Some new info came out on the crafting / gathering system and another view of RVR

First keep this in your mind. The developer wants to make it very clear this is an RVR game with no PVE progression .  But he knows that even the most hard core PVP player at times needs a break from PVP or just from fighting enemy players in combat endlessly.  In other games players would take a break and do PVE questing.  SO since there really is no PVE questing or progression he said "I have to make RVR have ALOT of different things to do and alot of different flavors beside just running out to fight an enemy or seiging fortresses."

This is one of many RVR activities besides fortress seiging or just roaming looking for enemy players to kill.  The crafing aspect of materials will tie into RVR.  He said crafters will simply not just see a "material node"  Crafters will actually have to survey the land and find a good mining spot.  Once they have a spot they will pull mateirals like iron out of the ground.  This will not be a very fast gather, it will take some time to set up, mine, seperate and load materials onto caravans.  Players can carry materials but caravans will be much more efficient with large loads.

Now because this is all happening in an RVR zone (pretty much the whole world map) Crafters are going to need the other classes there to protect them.  Otehr classes iwll be able to help a little with basic crafting / gathering but they mainly need to be there to protect the crafters from enemy attacks.  Now this may sound boring when you think about this and add it to the world of otehr games...  But in Camelot Unchained this wont be.  These caravans of materials will be VERY valuable, especially to the enemy since you have done all the work for them.  He expects there to always be raids groups roaming around the lands looking for enemy mine sites and caravans.  He expects these caravans to be attacked and ambushed far more than not.  Protecting these caravans and crafters will also get you well rewarded by your king even if they are not attacked my an enemy realm.  SO just look at this as one of the many RVR activities you can do besides keep seiges and defenses.

He said after the new years break he will have a big presentation on the crafting system but said know this it has alot involved from surveying land to gathering materials, then refining materials, then shaping materials, and finally putting them togeather to build things like gear or structures.

Now picture guilds.  Guilds will have their keeps and need resources, they will send out parties to get resources and bring them back to their keeps so they can upgrade their keep more as well as having materials to make gear for the guild.

PVE Update

So Mark (dev) said this today and wanted this to be more clear.  There will be alot of PVE threw the lore of the 3 realms.  You will see all kinds of creatures and legends.  If you want to take a break from RVR you can go farm PVE mobs and creatures for items, and materials as well as junk sell loot.  The depths will be the underworld of PVE and hold very desired things.

You will even see the "Big Bad Monsters Bosses"

While there will be ALOT of PVE  in this world you will NOT progress your character from it or obtain gear form it. but there will be reasons to partake in it.  You also wont see questline progression.  all progression ONLY comes from helping your realm in RVR threw many different ways or by doing crafting activities if you are a crafter.

I'm not too worried about the PvE portion (lack thereof) of this game. DAoC PvE was not really that great. I didn't log on to DAoC looking forward to grinding out levels. I logged on looking forward to RvR. Of course that isn't to say that they can't create a good PvE experience. However, most MMO developers have to split their resources to appeasing the two different groups: PvP & PvE. I am excited to see what they come up with when they are focusing 100% on RvR. I would HOPE that they have no excuse for failing at the RvR experience, considering it is their sole focus.

My playstyle is strongly biased to PvE and questing, but to be honest in today's climate I'm less anxious about a single game meeting all my "must have" criteria, simply because MMO's are so varied, and so accessible these days. Back in the early days, you didn't have much to choose from, and almost all required a subscription. You had to make sure a game met all your criteria, because it was the only one you were playing unless you left and moved to another (and the absence of communication platforms between servers and games meant that when you left, you left your friends behind, so it was a big decision to make). It's all so different now. Many people play multiple games, and use cross-platform communication tools to keep in touch. There are so many FTP and buy to play games that are now comparable to the quality of the original subbed games.

Even if Camelot focuses solely on RvR, it won't necessarily be a dealbreaker for me -- especially if the crafting system is well designed. If I find myself longing for PvE I can log into GW2 and get my fix without losing touch with our GSCH family. I didn't play DAOC or WAR so I'm kind of looking forward to seeing something outside the path that I've travelled (UO, EQ, WoW, EvE, LOTRO, etc), particularly in a setting that is a perfect fit for the Gaiscioch lore. Like Pyrrhic, I'm keen to see if narrowing the design focus produces something amazing, and avoids the quality issues that arise from trying to cater to all playstyles equally.

@Tyrra  I think alot of people who didnt play DAOC will be surpirsed with Camelot Unchained's RVR because there is so much more to it than PVP.  The PVE questing aspect wont be there but the lore, creatures and world will be.  There will be many ways to progress and be rewarded in RVR without actually fighting an enemy player.  The crafing and building system will also be huge in this game and you could get yourself lost in just that part.  Being an RVR game tho.. you will always be in danger, but that unknown adds excitement and anyone who played DAOC will tell you that, Your game plans can completely change for the night because of enemy realm actions.  But this danger also really helps to bring people of the realms and guilds togeather.  Guilds take alot of pride in holding keeps on the battlefield and protecting their own.

In a PVE game the story is always about "Your Personal Quest" In an RVR game the Story is what is what your realm is accomplishing.

I know I am new to this guild.

But, this is the #1 game I am waiting for.

I absolutely loved DAoC. I would say 80% of my time was RvR. Well, until ToA expansion, then many, many hours of getting through acts and acquiring the new items. I am glad to hear there are a number of you in the developing stage to get us some juicy tidbits.

I'd be most interested in hearing about the healing class and how it is shaping up. I miss being a healer. Which has been my main line of play style since DAoC. GW2 has been an adjustment for me and I still find my self staring at people's health bars wanting to heal the stuffing out of them. I also would be interesting in hearing about the other support classes mainly the Bard class as well. Thanks for any information you could give in advance.

So excited!

@Lorelei  A Bard type class as well as a minstrel type class are a huge thing on the Camelot Unchained forums right now.  There are alot of people asking for a Bard  class espeically.  There is already a stat confirmed as "Resonance" that will be used by "musical" classes and "speed" classes are planned for the game.  I am pretty sure we will see a Bard class very similiar to the one from DAOC.

Hello all. I saw a post on the Founder forums that said The Family will be playing CU --glad to hear it.  I'm in February's old school alpha, so if you guys need a marginally skilled player in your test group, just  let me know.

Also, current sentiment is that there will be a bit of PvE, however players will not be leveling through PvE.

I am super excited about this game, and I'm not a big WvW/RvR kind of guy.  I like the philosophy behind the game and the crafting (from what they're saying in the design docs) looks both challenging and interesting.  I'm all in for this one.

This is a game that really interests me. My first MMO was Dark Age of Camelot. I made a Kobold Shaman on day 1 and I still recall the excitement, the wonder, and the spectacle of it all (that was when MMO popularity was low enough and populations were low enough such that launch day was actually fun!). That was a more innocent time.

I have so many fond memories of playing DAOC; and there's a part of me that just wants to throw a bunch of money at Mark Jacobs so I can get into the alpha of this, and figure out how things work and see this new world...

... but I'm an older, more jaded gamer at this point. And there are so many instances of MMOs I've tested and tested and kept on testing to the point where I burned out on them when they launched (Guild Wars 2, SWG, Warhammer, heck I even briefly burned out on WoW after testing it for 9 months straight prior to its release). So I think I'm going to wait on the sidelines for this one, and watch with interest. At least for now.

I'm also concerned about the survival of a game with a monthly fee these days. I simply don't know that any game outside of WoW can pull that off anymore. I understand why they do it, and I know MMOs need cash to survive, but it's just a hard sell, IMHO.

Oh yeah. My Day 1 DAoC Kobold Shaman? He's still sitting at 49.5. He never hit the level cap. Oh I made plenty of other toons and have a number of 50s and master crafters but that little guy? He still hasn't completely grown up. Maybe a part of me doesn't want him to hit "adulthood" so he can keep dreaming those naive dreams about the fun, the glory, and the excitement of being in an unknown world.

So I may not see this game until launch day. But I'll be there. Oh yes I will!

Do you think they will offer the guild some sort Beta entry? A largely PVP focused game puts me off a bit, but I am also the type to try before ruling out a game.

@ElizabethInAustin I am sure when they get closer to launch you can try to get into Beta, especially under the Gaiscioch family.

Also think of it more of an RVR game, not just PVP.  There will be many things you can do to help your guild and realm and progress without fighting an enemy player.  There will be a very big world of lore (vikings, king aurther, and celtic) and PVE creatures and the world environment is even dangerous to you.  But all progresssion is only from RVR.  As a crafter or building you progress from doing your craft skills and each realm relies on their crafters for EVERYTHING in the game.

I would defenitly give this game a try especially as being a member of the Gaiscioch familiy because just like in DAOC this guild will make a name for itself and be a very strong force for its realm.

Camelot Unchained update.  The Alpha is planned for march 1st  So today we got to see how you create the abilities you will use. All of your melee or magic abilities are actually created by you by putting together components.  Here is an example for a mage first you choose a base component like FIRE, next you get to chose from a list of 10ish shapes and we will go with BALL, You then choose an icon you want for this ability from a huge a list. then you NAME your spell and finish. It is then put in your spell book (mage) You can go threw your spellbook then put your created abilities on your hotbar. After you use this spell enough and progress your character with it you will not only get better with that spell but unlock minor components to add to that spell in the ability creator. Currently it shows that you could add 2 minors to the base component FIRE and 2 minors to the shape BALL. these would be things like splash damage, roots, dots, debuffs, faster cast times, reduced cost, ext. There is even a 5th component spot that is much bigger but he hasn't told us what goes there yet. basically this system is crazy cool and you can make spells and abilities to exactly what you want for your character and play style.

Your spell book or fighter book can be opened to show you each conponent you know and the spells / melee attacks you have created.  It will even keep an extensive list of the stats your ability has as well as a libary of the history of the spell being used in combat like how many times it was cast, how many times it crit, how many time sit got interupted, how many killing blows it has had and so on.  They want everything there for you so you know every detail.

When this system goes public and everyone actually gets to see the ability builder and the amount of possibilities it will blow peoples minds!

For those of you that can get to the Portland Oregon area, in a few weeks Mark Jacobs will be flying out and wants me to put together a get together of Gaiscioch to meet him personally. I will be helping him and his family find a home here in Oregon that week so this may be the first of many cameo appearances by Mark. So keep Mid march open and I'll let you know when and where asap :)

That being said, I was able to give it a go last night! There is still much to do, but I do believe this is going to be a great game for a large guild such as Gaiscioch! I'm hoping...

Keep in mind that this is teh beginning of alpha and  they have only put about 1% in graphics and animations. They are still only at class archt ypes as well but what they have been building is a game engine that runs with physics and everything interacts with each other even spells.  They were able to put 1000 people in a small area all casting spells.  ESO and GW2 crash when more than 300 people hit an area.

Well, I have actually played on PvP servers which isn't much different - since PvP is always on even in major cities if they can sneak past the guards or defeat them.   I did it in WOW and in AOC and after playing on the PvP servers the PvE servers were rather tame, but I don't hold it against anyone for how they wish to play - I can totally understand not wanting to be ganked.

I will also add that while I have had bad experiences on those PvP servers nothing worse than what has happened in the WvW or RvR areas in other games within their designated areas  BUT some of my best PvP experiences have been on those servers.  I have found jerks on PvE servers who wish to grief you while you mine, craft, or just try and have RP conversations.   You just learn to move on and let it go - and build a team of comrades that will have your back.

@Poohka - big thanks for the links and you are so right - game will not be for everyone - especially young kids of the "now" generation who won't want to put in the work - as this game will definitely be a challenge.  In playing DnD with the grandkids I'm pretty sure that 14 year olds won't want anything to do with this.  But for me just having a spell book again is kind of a blessing and when he mentions that you need to learn how to use your bow to get a better one - and don't forget about getting better arrows also - well, it made me smile inside.

I will find it interesting if we could come up with squads to provide protection to any crafters needing to gather or build which would be awesome family events (if we can get enough people interested in the game).   I would probably have two characters and possibly 3 as the combat engineer sounds intriguing - I'm just not much of a crafter.

nice reminds me of old EQ where your weapon skill with 2h or 1h or bows etc even spells  actually had a skill and  as you used x ablity your skill level went up.

Requiring to actually craft or buy arrows and a quiver not like todays games of endless ammo. sounds like fun .

@ Dirk.... that is what I was thinking.

I mentioned the other day to my daughter's BF that in EQ we had to "study" our spell book to regen mana and he thought that was a bit much...  But it sounds similar here where we might need our own blood to recharge our book - makes battle prep all that more important.  Which to me is all about strategy - and I much prefer strategy over zergs and mindless button smashing.

Also just wanted to add... Some folks will say that they don't want to put that much work into a game - well, I can understand that also.  It is a game.  You need to have fun.  I can also state from experience that when you invest the time in a game like this you become much more invested in your character and you ending up connected to them in a way that you could never imagine.  It is a lot like table top DnD where you plan the character out and no choice you make is taken lightly.   I had a notebook on my shaman in EQ to plan skills and traits and even printed out all of the maps of the areas where I'd be adventuring to make notes on them for reference.... I love this sort of thing :)

I never considered it a job even though it was work - it was fun work.

Beginning of next month I need to make a choice on which tier to back... seriously consider the one that gives me no chance of ever playing anything but Tuatha... I'm sort of committed at this point.

I'm not really surprised.  Disappointed, but based on its KS date, yea, that's about standard.

Have decided to become a backer for CU, but first would like verification as to which realm Gaiscioch will represent.

Seems the obvious answer would be Tuatha De Danann; however, I did not want to make an assumption and end up on the 'wrong side' of the battlefield.

Of course this is based on "IF" we decide, as a guild, to have a presence in CU.

Marcus,

I can tell you with certainty Gaischioch will have a presence in CU (though likely not as a full fledged chapter due to its minimal PvE content keeping the player population not high enough for consideration) and it will definitely be representing the Tuatha De Danann.

Why would it not have a full pledge chapter?    Didn't the Gaiscioch Family originate from Darkage of Camelot which was  mainly played for its Realm vs Realm PVP between the Viking, Irish, and Aurturian lore....  Camelot Unchained is basically a brand new version of DAOC which focuses on RVR  and crafter PvE and is leaving out the basic PVE questing and grinding side that most people did not care for.  This is basically the game that the Gaiscioch Family has been waiting for since DAOC.....  Personally I think it would be silly not to make this the main game for the family.

As was stated in earlier posts, there will be PvE to support crafting and the Crafter class will have a very important (and primarily non-combatant) role in the game. I can tell you the Camelot Unleashed Building Environment (C.U.B.E.) can be pretty addictive and time-consuming. I think people can still buy Backer accounts that give them Beta (and maybe even Alpha) access. I will likely have a few Beta 3 accounts (equivalent to Warrior class in the Kickstarter) to give out as I was an early Founder (in fact, I think this was the very first KS I pledged). I've missed most of the alpha testing but am looking forward to testing some out before Beta 1 starts.

I read that the crafting class will play an important role in siege warfare by repairing walls, doors, siege equipment, etc. That sounds fun.

When on the offensive, can they work against the defenses of a keep? Sabotage walls/doors?

"is leaving out the basic PVE questing and grinding side"

That's exactly why it doesn't qualify for Chapter status.  "No PvE" excludes a very large portion of our community's interest.  Now, I realize that it doesn't make much sense on the surface, but a "Chapter" involves a lot more than just making a guild tag and tossing invites to people:

What makes a Gaiscioch Chapter?

Pirhana,

We will have a GSCH there but without a PvE side it does not meet the minimum qualifications of our compatibility matrix. Also keep in mind, right now their are a total of 4 original Gaiscioch members from DAOC still involved. The vast majority of our family today came to know us in RIFT a PvE focused game. We grew more than 3000 players in rift alone. Many of which are still involved to some extent today.

There is another Ireland themed 3 realm war game on the horizon in fact. Land of Britain is also Norse, British, Irish based. The difference is it has a full pve side of the game in addition to the rvr side.

We can't just say because a game has Mark Jacobs behind it its the perfect game for us. We need to take into account that the original version of Gaiscioch died in a fiery ball of flames and was resurrected after 2 years of 5 of us traveling through dozens of games looking for the right place.

Original DAOC Members Still Active Today:

  • Foghladha
  • Nona
  • Psyle
  • Nikodemus

Here's the breakdown of active players (past 30 days) based on which game they joined the family playing:

  • DAOC: 4
  • WAR: 48
  • RIFT: 146
  • GW2: 458
  • ESO: 106

Of these active players:

  • Enjoy PvP: 572
  • Enjoy PvE: 691

This is the data I must take into consideration when evaluating chapters. Additionally we will not launch into more than 2 games as a full chapter at a time as it is a tremendous amount of work for the elder team and I.

Another major factor playing against it is the subscription. Too many of us have fallen for the buy-2-play model and dont buy into subscription games anymore. If they were to abandon the subscription it would at least remove one major stop gap preventing our long term success there. Im sure it will have some interesting gameplay and i full heartedly support my friend Mark and I will certainly have an account (already part of the dollar club). But I cant with good faith push a full chapter knowing the vast majority of our family right now doesn't RvR and enjoys PvE. Sometimes leading a family means you have to put personal preference behind for what is right for the family.

According to Mark's vision there will be alot of PVE just no PVE progression.  The world will be full of creatures and lore.  They will srill drop valuable materials.  There will also be the depths which will be full of (scary) PVE creatures as well as traps.  From the Crafting aspect the actual crafter class and all they can do in the game and build is a PVE crafters dream but they also be apart of RVR and have a big role in it.  Dont forget the Scout classes,  they arent ment for PVP eigther.  Mark even said that there will be many things to do to progress in RVR besides PVP.

just saying I think alot of people who consider them self mainly PVE would actually enjoy Camelot Unchained.

Thanks for the replys you made some good points and I can see what you need to do for your players.

Just keep in mind, me like alot of people who played EQ did not like PVP but gave DAOC a try.  Countless times i heard people say that they didnt like PVP BUT when they experienced DAOC RVR, the unknown, realm pride, and just being there...  They all changed their minds and were hooked on RVR.  None of these recent games have even been close to what DAOC was and havent been able to show people how an RVR game is different than most PVP games.  I think you will be suprised how many (PVE) people will actually like Camelot Unchained if they give it a try and Mark is able to bring is vision of the game to life.

All I can say Pirhana is get people on board with the social adventure. Gaiscioch goes where interest demands and so far interest hasn't met the range we look for. As it gets closer to launch and we get some details that clarify things, our stance may change. But so far we don't have the support from the community at large to invest our time and resources into opening and fueling a chapter there. We get to the 300 range in population for the game and we'll take another look at it. But first we need to know that our population wants to play there.

Keep in mind, that Fog isn't saying that we won't have a presence there... he's just simply saying that the game does not qualify for the high level of logistical support that a Chapter requires.  There are a lot of bells and whistles that come with a Chapter designation, little extras that take hundreds and hundreds of hours of development work.  Fog can tell you how many man-hours of development time he's put into creating the Chapter support just for Guild Wars 2, and your jaw will hit the floor.

What makes that work worth it, is having a high level of interest and involvement by the gaming community.  Chapter-level support is designed to support several hundred concurrent players.

That's why the Social Adventures exists.  The level of support that the SA program provides, is just enough to support the lower levels of interest that many other games have.  Thankfully, Fog has been on the same page as me, because I've been poking and prodding for this type of program for a few years, including trying to get it started myself (sadly, I lack the coding skillz).

We'll be there in Camelot Unchained and we'll have the exact level of community support that our interest level will require.  Have no worries.

Yep - as explained in the recent livestream, there will be no VR.  At least not at launch.

Edit: This, same as Crowfall, won't come out in 2016. Beta starts "this summer" (thou beta 1 backers already have some test access + C.U.B.E.) and I'd assess launch not earlier than mid-2017.

I know since the game will be subscription based it may not be considered for a chapter, but I prefer subscription game that doesn't hound me to buy things in game.

Also, his vision for a crafting based economy to avoid the endless dungeon/raid for gear cycle is something I am looking forward to.

In other words, he is developing a game that has all of the elements I really crave.  I am a "Builder" and look forward to the games development.

As far as I've been told, it does not meet the Required criteria for consideration as a Chapter.  If people disagree based on better information, then read this month's magazine for the Chapter Selection Process and make your case, based on all of the Required criteria.

Hm, well, it seems that it is broken.  It was a URL that Fog had posted to Discord and said he wanted us to spread it around, so not sure what happened to it.

It's also a featured article in the current issue of the Gaiscioch magazine, so you all can find it in there.  Starts on pg. 17, iirc.

edit:  I figured out the problem and fixed it, so the link in my previous post should be working OK.  Don't ask what it was, as I'm not sure why the redirect failed, so can't answer.

edit#2:  Actually, I do know what happened.  The way Fog has the magazine configured so that the pages don't use "http://" in front of their URLs, so these forums won't recognize a copy/paste of the page URL, as a legitimate URL, so it just redirects to the 404 error page.

More or less like that...

I really like the art style for this game, I like the RvR focus, I like the housing and everything else, but I can't get behind the classes.  They just seem. . .dumb?  They just seem too far out there and special snowflake.  I was debating significantly backing this game but I decided to jump whole-hog into Rift.  I'm very lore focused, and even if I don't get the chance to Roleplay, I still like to build up a nice back story for my character and I don't know if I can make that happen easily with CU.

At first glance it seems very much like DAoC in that each class is unique across all realms. That said in DAoC (before expansions) the classes were different, but abilities were the same on each realm. They were just re-skinned and assigned to different classes. So far Camelot Unchained's classes seem to have a lot more depth, combine that with the ability crafting system and I think we are going to be looking at a lot of special snowflake builds. It Seems like they are designing the game so that as players establish a "Meta" counters to said meta can be quickly formed and implemented.

As far as each classes background they do seem very far out there, but I feel it was the exact direction they needed to go. As much as I would love a DAoC 2.0, I believe what they are creating is something very different and unique while being designed to target those players who have been looking for a RvR focuses game like DAoC for a long time.

Also the Viking healers throw rocks at their allies to heal them, I mean come on that's gold!

Yea, I've been waiting on the news since I heard about it, last week.  I was hoping for a Beta date, but news of a large investment by an... investor group, is pretty good news.  That means they'll now have a hand gently pushing them to move things along quicker.  I've always felt that Jacobs was squirreling on too many neat ideas and engine innovations.  Unfortunately, Kickstarter backers don't have enough push to be that hand.

Hopefully CU and AOC won't release in the same year, though.  That's going to make it awful tough for me to choose one, or the other, to focus on.  (AOC will automatically win, since I've already invested in it, but still...)

I watched their live stream and they were very adamant about the fact that These are friendly investors (same company that backed Mythic to make DAoC a reality). It seems they are rolling the dice on MJ again. He mentioned that some recent changes in the gaming markets have made these investors pull the trigger because many of MJ's predictions had come to light over the past few years when he first approached this investing firm on behalf of CSE. It seems most of his time over the past six months has been dedicated to making the deal happen and making it happen so that everything is a positive for the backers.

They were very transparent about any changes taking place. It seems that as far as Camelot Unchained is concerned there are no changed being made except for an accelerated time-line. as far as CSE is concerned it seems they have opened up several new positions on both offices. MJ stated that they also plan to bring their current employee's salaries in line with the increased salaries of the new positions they will be hiring for as a way of thanking them for taking a chance on CSE. The plan is to increase the outsourcing of more art assets, but he stated that CUBE will not be outsourced and will continue to be developed in house.

personally I can't wait for this game to reach beta so that we have a better feel of what live will look like. I will go ahead and state that they have already confirmed that beta will be handled much like Alpha where they send out a mass e-mail asking backers to log in on "X" server and do "X and Y" for a set amount of time or until we break it. They stated that they will have the test times mainly focused on Saturday afternoons for both NA EST, PST, and EU once they nail down a EU host. They are going to try to balance the frequency of test with how much they feel like they can stress their staff to be present on Saturdays for testing. He also mentioned that they understand the state of the market and know that many people expect "fun" when they sign up for a beta. Though their beta was promised to be a old school "broke game help us make it better" beta they understand that many people see beta as "try before you buy" where they can get in and have fun trying out a game. To that end they have promised to have some type of game mode (think huge battleground like Thidranki) that players can join and have some small scale wars in from time to time, just to keep things fun. For those in Alpha it should be way bigger than the friday night fights and really showcase the game engine that they have put so much development time into.

At any rate I think this will be a very developmental year for Camelot Unchained.

Beta is less than 3 months away.  Mark said each beta stage should be approximately 3-4 months.  Since all the new hires the game seems to be moving along fast.  Some cool new info I learned,  The groups will be like DAOC with 8 combatants but the kicker is they will be 8+1.   The +1 can only be filled by a Crafter class or Scout class.  Both those classes are very important to RVR.  This will help RVR by not allowing groups to choose to take another combat class instead which would be something gank groups would do.
