If you are in party, and in different overflows, right click on the portrait of the person who you wish to play with. Select "join in" and you will both be in the same overflow and able to party together :)

For the record, I have some friends on other servers and it did not work (as it's supposed to) for us. Once he came to our server, it worked better. We still had some odd glitches where I would have to initiate the "join in" after he formed the group and a few other odd ones. Not too surprising opening night.
Bah it has been broken since the end of day one....let's hope it is fixed soon so friends may play together easily.
That this wasn't working was by far the biggest source of frustration for Faireach and me. It would have been so much easier to just "show" him how things he was confused about work, but we could never seem to get in the same overflow. Hope they get it fixed quickly. :)
It's been very hit and miss....mostly miss for my wife and I. The most frustrating thing is when you finally get in the same instance and the have to zone into town or for a quest and then are separated again. Argh!!
Thank you for this! Was a lifesaver today with Twicked. I didn't have the Join option on a right click and was cursing up a storm. She did and calmly joined me in my little overflowing world. Thanks for the tip!
yeah, its hit or miss w/ that, sometimes you just have to log out, or have the whole group relog, then try it again. but good heads up, it took me a sec to figure that one out the other night when my gf and I were playing.
Worked much better Sunday. In fact, I only recall one occasion we had to jump through hoops to end up in the same overflow. Saturday, even hoop jumping wasn't doing us any good. :-) Glad to see they have gotten/are getting it under control!

According to the twitter feeds this is now fixed! Yay!
My husband and I play our mains together and Sun and Mon were much better. Sometimes our story line quests would still get us messed up, but the main reason seemed to be that whoever wasn't in the story line wouldn't be in overflow and as soon as you came out of your story you would end up in overflow with no room in the actual world for you to join your other person. If you wait a bit to get invited to the main area it's usually completely fixed and that usually only happens if the story line is in the main city.
I've started getting a new error on this, where I get a popup screen with a network error message in it. IME it's working more frequently now (and seems to be fewer overflows).
I've fairly-well narrowed this down. If I've been on-line for a long time, join-in quits working. Quit all the way to desktop and it seems to be working again.
Edit: was doing a bunch of moving from zone to zone in group for story quests last night, and quitting game turned out to be a very good solution.
Go to the same zone, not necessarily the same overflow, as your groupmate. Quit game. Log back in and you can join-in reliably, including getting zoned to quest instances.
