Gaelic pronunciations can be hard, all of those consonants that make a vowel sound and other odd effects that change the sounds of the printed words.
Well I found some help with that from a website maintained by Trinity College Dublin. Just type in your Gaelic word and VO-walla an audio pronunciation.
Give it a shot, who knows we might even start saying our names correctly.
That only helps slightly, there are at least 5 spoken Gaelic languages now. the Three that I can think of is Gaelic-Irish, Gaelic-Scottish, and Welsh. Yes, they are all different languages that sound similar.
Well I was going to use examples, but the web site doesn't support Gaelic characters.
I use the english letters as an example. Cat sith, Cait Sidhe, and cat si. All these are pronounced the same, but spelled differently depending on what region you are looking at or where the word comes from.
btw you pronounce all three of those as Caught Shee.

Clan MacDonald, McDonald whatever
Well that depends on what side of the coin you fall on. MacDonalds forget their own history and what they did while chastising the Campbells for being loyal to the current monarch. In fact if you look through the history of the MacDonalds you will see most of the time they where rebels or on the other side of the current Monarch of Scotland. Prime example. Robert the Bruce. The MacDonalds faught with the English against Robert which the Campbells supported. Also, the Campbells are one of the, if not the, largest highland clan.
BTW, Mc is Irish and Mac is Scottish, at least from my understanding.
Apparently, I've been saying our name wrong all along. It (according to the above linked site) is not "gosh-kia" but "gosh-a-key".
As for the old clan rivalries... paternal line to House Anderson, a Sept of Clan Ross, motto: "Spem Successus Alit (Success Nourishes Hope)", song: "The Earl of Ross's March".
Armigerous, the Andersons, but given our penchant for liberty instead of being ruled, this is but a trifle. **grin** Motto: "Stand sure"... which we do.
On the maternal side, it's Clan Mar, motto: "Pans Plus (Think More)" which we do as well.
I think it may well be that the old Irish/Scottish/English wounds are almost as sore to this day as those between certain parts of the American south in relation to "The North".... and about as relevant.
Well, you have to remember that this sight is the Scottish Gaelic pronunciations. I did a word test between Irish (which is what this site and every thing related to the guild revolve around) and Scottish. Though the words are similar in spelling they are not pronounced the same. Her is the words I tested out :
foclóir - Irish (meaning Vocabulary) Pronounced Fa cler
Focalair - Scottish (Meaning Vocabulary) Pronounced Fa ca laer
So, with that Gaiscioch in Scottish is pronounced gosh a kee. Which in Irish it's gosh kee ah.
