Tech help?

Maybe one of you smart techies can help me. One reason I left rift was because suddenly the game simply wouldn't update. I kept getting an error. Support was no help. My guild broke up. My friends has left and after 4 plus years I just decided to move one. When I heard Gaiscioch was back i decided to check if it would download and all was smooth. The problem is the game itself is basically unplayable. I have delays, lag, ability lag, whatever you want to call it. I hit a button and it takes seconds for anything to happen. This involves everything, anywhere. Chat, crafting, dims, fighting, mounting, minions everything. I just updated my drivers and was able to assign them the optimal setting for rift (per driver menu). I have no idea what it is. I have watched my latency but even though at time it spikes, even when it is low i have the ability lag. I noticed lag with latency of 70.

Any ideas of what else to try. Here are my specs.

Win7 home premium

i7-3770k cpu @ 3.5ghz

16gm ram

nvidia geforce gtx 650 ti boost x 2

Again, before i quit i had no performance issues, just a download issue. My husband build computer. I don't know a lot about computers. I have another box in my other house which is "better" but he wont let me have it right now because he said it had trouble running it but I dont remember that.

Any ideas what to do?

Two things to check:

1) have you tried lowering graphic settings to see if that changes things?

2) Are you running in 64 bit game mode? That runs way better than the 32 bit version. You can find this in the launcher window - Click Settings, choose General. In the window on the right it will have radio buttons for 32bit and 64bit. Make sure the dot is in the 64bit.

Here are some other things you might want to check. I have experienced these type of issues in the past.

1. What Anti-virus do you have installed? Some are overly aggressive and may interfere with games. I use the free version of Avast!

2. Have you done a thorough anti-virus scan? Maybe download Malwarebytes and run that.

3. What does your CPU usage look like in Task Manager? Is there a process that is hogging the CPU? I have a system at work which has a broken Windows Update process. Every so often it spikes to 100% CPU and makes the system virtually unusable. Or it could be some other process running.

4. Uninstall or disable anything  that runs in the background .

I'm happy to help try and track this down if you want to post what you find.

I wish I could help.   I got all the extra stuff to play rift again after not doing so for a very long time.  It was over 200.00 and not sure off the top of my head what I got.  So.. every time I play... I get the boot.  EVERY SINGLE time.. loud /whine.

I've been on the phone with some tech support, my hubby has his degree in tech support and no one can find out why.. So...  I hope you get yours going so you can play!!!

OK.. i have diagnosed what i think is a connection issue but it puzzles me... So ill try and explain... trying to decide if i should buy a new router.. kinda short on cash so dont want to waste it

Called Charter. They "fixed" something on their end. Ran a speed test on kids laptop in room with router... solid speed at 60+mbps... no dips

Went into my room (played rift 1 yr ago, same router, no problems). Ran speed test. 30mbps but spikey down into the zeroes... looks like an ekg

Took kids laptop and put next to mine and ran at same time. Hers was about 40k, spikey,  but never zeroed out. Mine same. very spikey with dips to zero

Random speed tests on my computer over the last few days range from 10k to 60k with serious drops to zero at times

Work laptop ran at only 10k some spikey.

laptops in room with router... no spikes/drops

Is router going bad? or my receiver?

Are you using Wired or Wireless connections?

I am guessing you have one router and that if in same room wireless all works fine because close to the signal. If this same router worked fine a year ago, but doesn't now, it is probably the router. It sounds like it is not getting it's wireless signal out strong enough and having issues maintaining it causing the speed spikes. Walls will reduce the strength of a signal from your wireless router and reduce the speed, but shouldn't cause spikes for other rooms.

So in testing further just to be sure, verify if wireless connections to the router aren't spiking in the same room - including being right by the router and as far from it in room just to see. It might feel tedious but slowly test out in different directions moving only a few feet at a time to get a mapping of how it is working in the house. Note when it has to go through walls to get to where you are at.

I did some of my own mapping with my router and found that I have close to 60 foot range if not much obstruction, but have funky spots outside where it doesn't work due to metal walls of a trailer hiding under our cool added insulation and siding. ::chuckles:: This also makes the addition work funky depending where I am sitting. I even had to redo where my main phone was in the house so the cordless handsets would work everywhere, so every wireless thing is central in my den.

So play around with mapping out your wireless network's strength and where the spiky speed changes occur. It would seem they should show up in the same room, but if right next to the router they might not as the signal may still be working good within a few feet of the thing.
