Gold Sellers Meet Sandbox

Keep this post on top. I'd like everyone to post something or a compliment or something to show the widespread support of the community in getting rid of this problem once and for all.

Locking accounts, banning, etc only makes gold sellers get more aggressive. Thats why we now have hacked accounts spawning up all over the place. If they listened to me when i visited and implemented this idea this would have never been an issue. I deal with 1000+ hackers a day on Franchising.com and the whole bloody thing is automated. It makes them think it works but it doesn't really do anything. They just play in their little dummy environment and get nowhere. Since I did this the attacks are always the same. Easily caught, easily detected, easily cured. No more having to build more code to stop them. As long as they think it works they will keep it the same.

I'm not really certain that sandboxing would fix the problem in this case - perhaps you could explain just what you mean? Maybe I missed your actual suggestion (and if so, just chalk this up to another of Mythgarr's flights of fancy)

Would the reporting system work the same? As players we would still click "report spam", and after a certain number of reports they would get flagged? I would love to see something better than the current system implemented - I hate it when "real" chat gets lost in all the spam, and I miss something that I care about. :( _____ Ok, I just made my first post on the Trion forums... heh heh... ;)

I imagine how it works is User Flags Chat Message As Spam CSR views the message and click Is Spam or Not Spam If it is Spam the users account triggers the Spammer flag and the message is included in the list of messages to match against in the future. If another user matches that same chat it would flag that account as well causing a ripple effect of lockdowns.

I replied for you Ben. Hopefully it'll help the thread get more traction. It's a good idea honestly with no big drawbacks. Even if it doesn't work, Rift didn't have to spend many man hours trying out your idea.

I like the added suggestion that flagged accounts can still talk to each other - that would prevent most trivial 'mute check' implementations. I might also allow them to communicate normally in public non-auto channels (ie: if all do /join spamrz and use /7 to communicate with a central non-spamming account). Ideally you might also watch for commonly whispered accounts to prevent them from just /w nonspamrbot to check for mute, but that could be parsed at any time and would require an extra dead account running a bot. All in all I'm very confused at why gold farmers can make any money at all off Rift - with the exception of level 50 mounts gear is either very inexpensive or requires some combination of faction, planarite, plaques, and other non-transferable currency.
