Asking them to put a request on is great idea. Most of the lower stuff doesn not require a lot of family vault points. Unless the person is really new or never joins in events, they should have points to use to order things.
I randomly put out requests for gear on the site for people to make for my various toons even if I can make everything but nirnhoned and I honestly don't want any of that unless it is to bother researching it someday. I know I'll never make any for myself. I just don't see the point of it with how I play. ::chuckles::
This game is definitely easy to be the self crafter compared to some I've played and in the harder ones I've tried or tested, I just made alts and played with it so I could make everything anyway. I'm such a crafting nerd.
I do encourage use of the marketplace and I see no issues with telling the other person you want some crafting points and to put the request up for you while you are talking together. I've seen things snagged quite fast on there by some crafters that if you don't coordinate to grab it as soon as they post it, someone else might actually sneak in there. I've had full suits of armor and weapons done in an hour of requesting them with only one comment in guild chat stating I posted things to do.
