Last night when we took a supply camp we built a lot of siege there before moving on. I don't believe we left anyone behind to man the siege... so my question is will the NPCs there use the siege to defend the camp if it is available? I have been rezzed by NPCs in WvW so I was wondering.
No, NPC will not use siege. If you are referring to the supply camp south of the western keep, I believe we did actually have a small group manning that siege holding back another server's zerg for us while we pushed into the keep. Unless this was a different instance.
No, unless the NPCs have been taking some night courses I wasn't aware of, they don't have the qualifications to man the siege. Only living players can man the siege. In an exposed location like a Supply Camp, it's highly recommended to also have a few players spare to help tie up any enemy forces coming in. Siege out in the open is very exposed and while a powerful tool for support, you will be quite vulnerable manning it if the enemy are smart and ignore the NPCs to go straight for your siege.
Occasionally siege are built at supply camps that aren't likely to be kept long just do burn all of the accumulated resources to keep them out of enemy hands.
Since siege can be bought with money, badges of honor and gotten as a reward for the wvwvw jumping puzzles they can be equally valuable in certain situations as a "waste" of enemy resources.

OK thanks for the clarification. I think it was just the invisibility bug that had me a bit confused... by the end of the night I could only see my party... and my weapons were invisible. Hopefully they fix that soon.
Slightly off topic but last night I was with a group protecting Heroes Lodge camp. At one point there were 15+ siege engines set up and we repeatedly wiped increasingly large attack forces. In the end we held it for at least 1.5 hours and killed tons of the enemy. They finally wised up, gathered around 30-40 people and all charged in at the same time from the South. I have to say it was probably the best time I have had defending so far. So yes, building siege at supply camps can be quite rewarding.
That sounds pretty cool Silas. I hope they continue to improve and expand on the base they built for WvW... it is definitely the area of the game I enjoy the most.
Silas Tirean's Borderlands Event on Monday did something similar. We held a supply camp for over an hour with the outmanned buff constantly turning on and off on us.
