So I am coming back after an over two year break and was wondering how our server is doing in WvW. I see that we have dropped down to 17 on the list. Back in the day that did mean much population wise but in today's game what does that mean population wise in WvW? Is there still plenty of people out there to kill? Is roaming in small groups groups or solo still viable?  Is it just a massive zerg vs zerg or pve?  Bottom line is it still fun with 24/7 killing of players not AI.

First of all, welcome back to GW2!  There have been a significant amount of changes to the game, not only WvW, but SoR herself.

Yes, we have moved down in ranks over the last 2 years.  There have been several situations where tensions between individuals and guilds caused there to be a few upheavals, resulting in a change of the player dynamic in WvW.  This resulted in our slide down in ranks.

As of today, there are several guilds in SoR dedicated to rebuilding our WvW presence.  It is a slow process because everyone wants to be sure that we do not have to face another exodus like we have before.  There are plenty of people to kill, roamers and zergs alike.  Many people prefer to roam in order to flip things quickly, or find fights with others to test their skill.  There will always be zergs, people not used to roaming, or likes the atmosphere of being with a larger group.

There will always be something fun to do in WvW for any play style you have!

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Roaming is more viable now than it has ever been. The lower the tier the more people who can solo or duo are more important. There are plenty of fights to be had as a solo roamer. I typically roam from NE camp to Hills to SE camp keeping upgrades going. I find many 1v1 and 1v2's pretty much anytime. Occassionally you'll get a 5 man roaming around. The zergs typically only show up when you hit their upgraded keeps with a sizable force. We've had great luck however hitting all 3 keeps with 5 people per keep. That tends to make the scout report back that the threat is not viable to bring the blob and we're able to converge on the 3 castles quickly before they know anything is up.

To be quite honest Ironbars, WvW right now is the best it's been since i've been playing. Not to easy, not a giant blob v blob fest. The skilled player really has the ability to shine in this tier.

Logged on this weekend and played WvW for the first time in two years.   (I've been in and out of GW2 for Wintersday and Mad King holiday events since I left.)

It's definitely a very different Sanctum of Rall from the one I remember.  It's all fun, though.  GW2 is such an easy game to come back to!

Three weeks back, now, and WvW is a lot of fun on Sanctum of Rall.  I've been running with [OMEN], [PAIN], and [EVIL], and they definitely have their act together.  Good fights, good tactics, good commanders, and a strong Teamspeak community!

Any update on the state of WvW on SOR? It does not seem like Gaiscioch runs group events all that often anymore. I remember good fun in the old days with Pooka and Fog running multiple weekly events, with a big following.

If that is not happening anymore, is it any fun or worthwhile playing WvW these days?

StarrCraft,

Most of our events are in WvW these days. Last week there weren't many because several of our commanders were traveling to the East Coast party.

These Commanders run WvW events several times a week:

  • Foghladha - Tue @ 6PM PT, Sun @ 12AM PT
  • LeslieoftheStars - Fri @ 11:30AM PT, Sun @ 4PM PT
  • Smitty - Wed @ 5PM PT
  • Terafer - Sat @ 6PM PT (Rotating Reset Commander)

Also note that many of our normal events have moved to HOT content to unlock much needed supplies for our guild halls to get the ability to claim and upgrade in WvW. By december things should balance back out and hopefully Aoibheann will be back healthy again. She injured her back last month and hasn't been able to sit at a PC.

And what is the Gaiacioch participation level like in WvW. Do you still have a decent group size to get things done, and have fun? And does the lower tier still offer good clashes and competition?

WvW has been a roller coaster from tier 1 to tier 17, server drama, and widely varying populations. So I am trying to gage where things are at.

(I figure that HOT will detract from WvW for the short term, which is to be expected)

Kale,

Is the [EVIL] guild Evil Doers by chance?  Way back when when I played GW2 I was in Evil Doers on Anvil Rock.  Was a small man roaming guild.  Thought they had mostly all left though.

I typically get 30-50 during my events in wvw. Now with the new merged guild chat its even easier.

Seems like we've been getting challenged alot in WvW lately. We've been getting hammered during the off time hours and thus are lossing the overall war. Everytime we go out though it seems that we dominate it's just those other hours.

Escaflownae,

That is because when we go out we dominate, but we are not out there all the time. Just a handful of people in an organized group can make a world of difference. With HoT drawing so many of our regular WvW people into the new content we're even thinner than we were. In a few months when the newness wears off it should bounce back. We've survived 3 splits so far and still remained out of the last tier. I think this is a good spot for us right now as when we want to partake we can go put up some victories on the battlefield, but we can't get hung up on PPT. Just as you can't play all day nor can the handful of commanders trying to keep us afloat. In time things will balance out but right now the new content is drawing people away from WvW. It will all normalize soon.

SOR's WvW community has diminished a lot.  Activity-wise, we probably should be in bottom tier, but we still maintain a high skill level of those that participate in WvW content.

It's really hard to get an idea of our server's population in most of the game, due to the mega-server technology, where PvE is blind to server affinity.  For WvW, where we do have server affinity, its a lot more apparent that we just don't have the peeps that we once had.

SoR is just not a WvW-focused server, which is why all of the pure WvW guilds that have come hoping to dominate here, have either dissolved or left.  For us that call SoR home, it is what it is and always has been: We go out, we have fun, then when we're done, we go do other stuff.

Yeah i realize that. There is a certain aspect that I admire about this place and what GSCH has done for its fallen. Makes it neat to call this place home. I just sucks that our WvW community is needing to rebuild so much. With the SOR rewards and community site it looks like GSCH is doing all it can to get people involved.

To bad we can have a SOR WvW rally :P lol
