Free Eternity

So, two days ago I came up with an idea. I had a Sunrise, and I wanted a Twilight as well, but I had no inclination to grind for a third legendary (the second being FSP). So I figured: why not get a player to send me their unbound Twilight, I'll unlock the skin, and then forge it with my Sunrise to make Eternity! I mail them the Eternity as compensation for their Twilight, and everyone profits!

In theory, brilliant. In practice...

Two days of getting downvoted/trolled/banned on GW2 subreddits and being trolled/abused in LA, my patience was running thin and my hope running out. I understand that trusting someone with your Twilight is a big step, but there's no reason to be rude and hostile to someone merely offering a service. I offered as much reasoning and collateral as I could to ensure that interested players could be assured of my legitimacy, and I got a few interested parties who were going to think it over. (As of this morning, one pm'ed me, but I was unable to complete the deal due to what happened last night.)

Last night, a player excitedly whispered me saying he wanted to do it, and how would it go down, etc. At first he wanted me to mail him the Eternity, at which point he would send me the Twilight, and I told him what the plan was and that I needed his Twilight to make the Eternity. He hurriedly agreed, ignoring my offers of collateral and mailing me the Twilight. I was touched by his trust.

But all was not as it seemed...

I did exactly as promised, taking screenshots along the way, and mailed him back the Eternity. Here's where it got interesting: after mailing him the Eternity, two GM's (including him) tagged up on either side of me and informed me that the trade had been with Anet, and they were testing to see if I was legitimate. They asked if I wanted my Twilight back (I think one was confused about which GS I started with, and meant to offer me my Sunrise) so I could continue to offer my trade, but I told them that I hadn't had many interested parties and was largely just getting abuse, so I didn't think anyone would take me up on it. This left them with the problem of the Eternity, which they couldn't very well just delete since I sacrificed my Sunrise to make it, but clearly had no interest in keeping. So they asked who I would like them to send it to, and NO ONE on my friend's list was online. Not my wife, not my long-time friends from GW1, not even my boss. So I asked in GC who wanted a free Eternity from Anet, and as you'd expect, no one took it seriously. But Jedibarbie was the first to respond, so she got it. Congrats, Jedibarbie! The devs stayed in map a little time to clear my name, and I uploaded the screenshots to Imgur.

All in all, an interesting night.

Friday July 11th was truly an exciting day.

I logged into gw2 and was just planning on doing my daily and killing the karka queen. I noticed some people talking about Eternity GS in guild chat but didn't think too much about it at that time. A few moments later i saw a guild message from Angrimbor in which they asked "Who would like a free Eternity from Anet?"  followed by "This is a legit offer" . In my mind I was thinking "this cant be for real". I decided to respond. I said "I'll take it if its free". Angrimbor replied "Okay"

What happened next was a whirlwind and i think i was in shock all afternoon. I was in combat killing karka queen when i was asked to pm a gm from anet. I was then invited into a party including Angrimbor  and 2 GM's. Then was asked to come to Lion's Arch. I tried to port and was in combat It seemed like it took 20 minutes to get there, lol. Upon arriving to LA I see Angrimbor, and the 2 anet employees. The next thing I know i have a mail from one of the GM's and it included a short message and the Eternity greatsword. I could not believe it. I immediately chose stats and equipped it. It unlocked all three skins twilight, sunrise, and eternity. I keep my graphics turned up most of the time now so i can just admire it.

Thank you so much Angrimbor for being so kind and generous. I am truly amazed.

I am so grateful to have joined The Gaiscioch Family. This guild is filled with honest, caring and trustworthy individuals. I feel so blessed to be a member.

Glad to hear things worked out well for all involved. I was in Lions Arch for about an hour reading Angrimbor's vain attempts to make his deal in map chat while I did some crafting, and can only commend his patience in sticking with it for 2 days (and maintaining civility for his part in the bargain).

"Who would have thought it would be so hard to give away a free Eternity?" - indeed. :)

(Bah, accidently hit Post Topic button trying to scroll back up, so might as well edit in something)

Everyone does understand why Angri got the negative response that he got, right?

True (and honest) intentions aside, this procedure is exactly what scammers use to cheat others, not just in a game, but in real life, too.  There's a "contest winnings" phone scam going on right now all over the world, they want you to send them money to pay fees to "claim your prize".  There is no prize, other than the award for being a Trusting Chump.

One can say that its a shame that we live in such a society where we can not trust each other, but understand that even the animals can't trust each other, either (I'm sure you've all heard of the "food chain").  Darwinism is a fact of life, propagation and continuance of all life, does rely on survival of the fittest.

Keep that in mind when dealing with others: the lack of trust is nothing personal, its just the way life is.

I really want to create a toon and name him Mr Escrow. The idea is put Mr Escrow someplace quiet right outside a major city and have office hours of like 30 minutes every other day or something like that. Mr Escrow's main duty would be to just facilitate honest exchanges between two players. I would even offer it as a free service (but accept tips of course). Only problem I would see is gaining the reputation necessary for people to trust me.
