Hi there everyone Carpevicta is the Norn guardian that I am running . She is level 30 now.

I am one frustrated nub who could use some help from someone who  can explain the basics of GW2 to me.  I  know when I was in Rift with the guild , there were peopel there that helped nubs like me get up to speed on the basics. Is there anyone heresure, there is lots of information here and on the web. I have tried that route and it is overwhelming.

I  tried to do WvW last night with a group  and  got on TS - couldn't talk - it wasn't  that I had myself muted it was the server and I couldn't get any help from the group I was with to resolve that issue.  I died and someone nicely came back to rez me but then whatever speed buff to running there is, I didin't  have so I got  further behind and because I could not speak  I tried to whisper but wasn't sure if they were going through . I finally  left in frustration and just logged for the night. but  a kind hearted soul who would be willing to spend a little time on voice chat talking would  help me tremendously.

Thanks

one frustrated Nub

p.s.  a nod to Sir Paul and his recent birthday with the topic title

Cari -- I'm always happy to help explain things.  All my characters have "Shmi" or "Pow" in the name -- ask any time.

Some tips:

  • ask for help in GameVox (see http://gsch.info/voice if you don't have it yet).   That's the guild voice chat -- I'm "Lakshmi" there.   (TS is voice chat for the entire SoR server and it's often busy/hectic there.)
  • if you can make it out to WvW during a weekday guild event there's usually more time for help, just because WvW isn't as hectic as it is at night.
  • Finally if I could give WvW newbies just one tip, it's this:  prioritize run speed in your own build.   Most classes have a trait or skill that gives them permanent +25% run speed -- or a weapon skill with really good runspeed uptime -- and it's invaluable for catching up to and staying with the tag.  (And staying with the tag is far more fun, and safer!)

Guardians are notoriously slow - two things which may help before you get a chance to chat with someone:

Use Greatsword and Staff when you need to keep speed up.

Greatsword 3 has a leap that jumps you forward and has a pretty quick cool down.

Staff 3 places a symbol that gives you swiftness (the  run buff) when you run through it.

That should help keep you from falling too far behind - plus most commanders will stop periodically to gather up their "tail" (all the people who are strung out behind) to keep everyone together.

@Lakshmi

I will look for you online , thanks for offering to help.

I  do have gamevox loaded and ready to go on my computer  and I have logged on to it, but prolly not the best of times because very few people  were on.

"  (And staying with the tag is far more fun, and safer!)"  yes, I agree !

@Valin so I picked the pokey class to level -  LOL

thanks for the  weapon suggestions.  I will try and see  if I can find weapons that offer a speed bonus

Hi Carwyn,

I command with my guardian in WvW. When we are running or stacking to run, the guardians will be using our staff. We put down #3 for Symbol of Swiftness and keep the staff on when running to an objective. The staff is also used for Might which is our #4 Empower. On the right hand side of your skill bar you will have your heal and 4 other slots. Two main ones are your Retreat (for extra speed when the swiftness runs out) and Stand Your Ground for stability. I hope this helps and there will be skill and trait changes this Tuesday. I am in game most days of the week and you can whisper me any time or talk in gamevox if you need more help.

~Leslie

The guardian was the first class I played at launch and the first one I maxed out, and this is one of the problems I had with it in wvw as well, due to all the running... It's definitely a noticable difference from other classes as far as mobility, but if you're running with a group all I can say is don't miss the speed boosts they put down =) theres no signet or speed increase like some other classes, you have the staff but its a really, really short uptime for the speed boost from it (symbol of quickness i beleive). but definitely have that equipped and also a swiftness shout like leslie said (guard's have some great shouts, you should definitely get all the shouts first) personally I use hold the line and stand your ground. Guardian's are considered by most to be a support class, and that's the role they fulfill best in wvw so when traiting them you kind of have to look at it the way of how best to fullfill that role.

if you decide to try something else, as far as other classes, the ones with the best mobility imo were mesmer and elementalist, both ele and necro have a signet which allows you 25% run speed regardless of your traits.

As far as that speed boost goes,Rune of Air, Rune of the CentaurRune of Speed and/or Rune of the Pack  are relatively inexpensive, speed boost extenders.  These minor rune are about 15-35 copper, for each. and with two of those runes, you can extend swiftness granted through your staff, or by others. The boost is small, and  it may be a little early to worry about these, as you will likely be switching out your armor fairly frequently while leveling.

As far as gear goes, I tend to make sure that I am in level appropriate gear at least every 10 levels, especially with the weapons. With the way that the game scales, if your gear is too far behind your character level, you can put yourself at a  disadvantage. That said, my suggestion is that you save your karma and badges for level 80 gear, and buy blues, or greens from the trading post and make use of the level up rewards. Keeping up with your personal story is also a decent way to obtain level appropriate gear.
