Anyone know what I should do with the bulk items I'm crafting that I don't use for quests or leves? Should I just vendor them?

So far I've horded a lot to make sure I have lower level items to use on other classes as I do them.  Only things I sold were the few things I knew I would not use only to make back gil on the items I did have to buy.  Been playing so many games I'm not sure if there is a way to "destruct" materials to salvage parts from them in FFXIV or not.  Just like I can't remember the reason why you want armor 100% spiritbound in the game off the top of my head as I type this.  ::chuckles::

Anyway, I know I still have a learning curve on this and REALLY need to figure out what to keep and how to organize things going into live.  Since it doesn't appear that we are going to have a wipe, I'm sure I'll be figuring this out in the first week for sure including getting questing done through the main story for a retainer!

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

If you are crafting items in bulk to level, you are doing it the expensive way. :)  You can double or triple the XP you get per combine by digging a bit deeper into the crafting mini game.  Double XP means more than faster leveling, it's also half the mats.  Look at how fast you can burn through crystals and compare that to how long it takes to chip a single crystal out of a rock and you'll see why I personally prefer as much XP as I can get out of each and every combine.  Folks complain about how long the mini game takes, but believe me, the mats-gathering game takes far longer!

My tips for leveling crafts faster:

  1. Use rest XP for crafting. Eat food!
  2. Always fill as much of the quality bar as you can before completing the recipe.  Fill it to 25% and you get 2.5x the XP -- even if you don't craft an HQ item!  Fill it 100%, get 4x the XP you'd get from, say, crafting the item using Quick Synth. Here's the curve:

  3. The first time you craft a recipe, you get bonus XP.  (If you follow tips 1 & 2, you should be able to level without repeating any recipes.)
  4. If you score an HQ item, check to see if there's a GC bounty for it... massive XP!  Otherwise, it should sell well to other players.
  5. Check to see if you can turn the crafted item in for a Tradecraft Leve.  (These are in the same region as where you learned your craft.  So weavers, check Levemates in Thanalan.)  Not quite so much XP as for HQ items, but it still beats vendoring the item.

Anyone good at creating guides?  Some great tips in various threads, but its spread out and difficult to piece together.  I suck at guides, so I'm not volunteering, just asking.  ;)

I make sure to max out quality when I craft. But even with all the bonuses, you can't clear a tier of crafting by just crafting each item once. By "bulk" I mean crafting the 8 or 10 items (that number continues to increase with level, of course) repeatedly to get to the next level. Leves aren't an option for me - I save those to level my 2nd class with my wife and I don't generally stay offline long enough to collect a bunch of rested xp.

I did put aside the few HQ items I got though. Vendored the rest since my bags were too full to continue crafting.

What I meant in my OP was is there anything to do with all the crafted gear other than selling it? I haven't found salvage and it seems silly to try to soulbind everything to break it down for materia. Anything beyond those options, is what I was pondering. I guess once we have GC's I'll be able to trade in for crests or tokens or whatever they were called.

You can break down items for materia, but it requires a quest to learn how at about level 15 and the items must be spirit bound. So wear them to gather in? >.> lol
