News from: Tamriel Foundry

The Elder Scrolls Online has a presence at the ongoing E3 convention this week where prospective players are invited to try out the game’s PvP systems. Rather than trust new players directly into the uncontrolled environment of a Cyrodiil campaign ZeniMax has developed a small PvP mini-game to use for such tradeshow events. First reported [...]

While this looks VERY attractive, I'm not sure how this would affect the current PvP design.

Well if they do it right it could bring eSports to Elder Scrolls which would benefit us all.

It depends on how they choose to incorporate it into the game.  They're treading a razor thin wire by trying to merge eSports content into a MMORPG.  Do it right, it can work out.  Do it wrong and bad things happen.

I prefer that developers stick to separate MOBA clients, if they want to do eSports based on their current MMO game.  Wrath of Heroes actually did work, but EA did what they're famous for and micro-managed Mythic and pulled the plug on a knee-jerk.

ArenaNet has had some success with GW2 s/tPvP (arguably), but not without a lot of struggles to get it to work.  While s/tPvP doesn't use a separate client, like Wrath of Heroes, it is kept separate from the main game.

edit: I'll read up on it later, have a busy night.

I'm not really thrilled about this, to be honest. If Cyrodiil was firing on all cylinders and was populated and bugfree, maybe. But adding a new form of gameplay which will divert ZOS's resources and focus, and potentially cause a whole new set of balance issues... meh.

In 2009, Blizzard's Rob Pardo said that Arenas were the worst design decision they'd made in WoW:

If I was going to pick on a game design thing that I look back on and think was a mistake? We really never designed WoW to be a competitive e-sports game; it was something that we decided to start tackling because there was such a desire and demand to evolve it in that direction, to introduce competitive arenas. I'm not sure that that was the right thing to do with the game.

We didn't engineer the game and classes and balance around it, we just added it on, so it continues to be very difficult to balance. Is WoW a PvE cooperative game, or a competitive PvP game? There's constant pressure on the class balance team, there's pressure on the game itself, and a lot of times players who don't PvP don't understand why their classes are changing. I don't think we ever foresaw how much tuning and tweaking we'd have to do to balance it in that direction. Either I'd go back in time to before WoW ever shipped and change the rules to make the basic game more conductive for being an e-sport, or if not that, just say it doesn't make sense.

I play ESO for the questing/story and the large-scale PVP. If I wanted to play an eSport, I'd go play LoL or Dota 2 or Starcraft 2. If I want to play an instanced battleground, I'll go play WoW or WildStar. I fear ESO is going to try to be all things to all players and succeed in none of them.
