As part of the quest, you need to defeat a level 42 mob (and The Rift is a 40-45 area).  Practically speaking, it is unlikely that you will be able to complete the transformation before at least level 35.

vampires sound like they'd be very deadly as crowd control if mixed with other stun abilities, could lock down a runner long enough for the group to kill them, makes them ideal for being the main assist.
