ArcheAge castle siege
This past week saw a couple of interesting developer quotes surface regarding ArcheAge and The Elder Scrolls Online. I don't know about you guys, but I filed them away for future reference, both because I'm cynical and because the topics covered are high on my personal pucker factor list.

First up was ESO's Matt Firor, who stated that his game will deliver a "polished, lag-free launch experience." Then it was Trion's Evan Berman, who said that ArcheAge's "earned and crafted items are objectively superior" to what will be on offer in the title's western cash shop.

I'd like to believe both of those quotes, naturally, but I didn't start playing MMOs yesterday. What about you, Massively readers? Do you put any stock in pre-release developer promises?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

LOL!

The first thing I thought when Firor said they planned to deliver a "polished and lag-free release experience" was "Oh my god, you moron!"

How could someone put their foot in their mouth so horribly so close to release?

Modern technology allows for some pretty amazing creations (things that could not be imagined when I was a child) but everyone knows, the more you try to accomplish, the higher the chance of encountering kinks in the system... I don't see how a release of a very high quality MMO could POSSIBLY be "lag-free" given that MANY times "lag" can be caused by the user's internet connection or having an older PC or even because they are streaming something while playing... Now granted, I am intelligent enough to realize that he meant "system-based lag" (i.e. lag which has zero to do with the player's PC or internet connection) but he MUST know there are going to be MANY MANY MANY people who take what he said at face value and will be expected ZERO lag, no matter the source of that lag.

But, all things considered, if this is the biggest mistake they make while launching such an incredible game, I'll be more than willing to overlook it :)

(as an aside, I'll be thrilled if the "skill-lag" is gone.... I'd be so happy if that was the case, that I'd overlook other things not being perfect)

It seems to me to be an incredibly stupid thing to say even outside of the reasons Zem stated.  You are setting yourself up for failure.  Now you have said it will be "polished and lag free".  If that does happen, which is doubtful given industry history, then you have just met the standard you have set and there will be nothing to say after that.  If you fall short of that standard, then it can be stated that you failed regardless of how comparatively good the launch is.  If you just remain silent and miss the "failure" charge, then maybe brag about it after the fact, it becomes a stunning success, rather than just meeting your standard.

The second quiet fact being they will have a rather large "beta" test going on for five days before full public launch.  That would be us, meaning everyone that got early access and will be leading the wave of people that will follow in public release.  We will have a five day lead to find more bugs and have them issue patches before the, hopefully, larger wave of people come after.  Anyone want to put money on there being a BIG patch update just prior to general public release?
