I had some down time at work this morning and wanted to look at making my first build projection. I'm fascinated by the idea of a plate armor, 2H sword wielding, lightning calling Battlemage, and I've started an Imperial Sorceress to try this out. I'm already lvl 11 and sort of jumbled up my skills right now for levelling, but ultimately, I'd like to shoot for a build like the one linked below.

Does it seem viable for PvE/dungeons/groups at all? I tend to solo a lot because my play time is limited and (usually) comes in short bursts, but I don't want to limit myself to being a loner. I've never really tried this before, mostly because I have too many alts and never get one to 50, lol. I've also never really played a caster in ANY MMO, but the way skill lines work together and cross-over in ESO finally has me spell-slinging and I think I like it :)

I have a VR1 mage that I run melee.  Leveling I tried 2-handed but I prefer dual wield personally.  What I will say is that it is extremely difficult to split focus between weapons skill build and caster build like you have with 2-hand/destro staff.  I found that medium armor is pretty much necessary if you want any melee dps because you need the crit - and it synergizes well with crit surge.

For your 2-handed morphs though I would recommend considering carve over brawler.  Carve builds a silly amount of ultimate which is probably most useful for groups.

What I run right now is sort of like this build although I haven't gotten fighter's guild up yet for flawless dawnbreaker.  There are other skills I swap in depending, but evil hunter is silly powerful against any undead/daedra, the restoring twilight although I dislike pets in general is decent damage wise without having to work it into a rotation per se.  I run resto staff in the off hand because survivability for hard encounters and AvA with Pookha.  I swap in cc or w/e I need depending on the circumstance usually dropping evil hunter or mages fury.  Also the Atronach does amazing dps and is what I use for soloing/while I'm still building up my fighter's guild rank.

I don't have more time right now to go into it, but try stuff out while you level and see what works.  Good luck!

I run a 2-hand sorc myself. As you know everyone has a different play style, but I thought I'd share my current (not done with tweaks) build.

Pve I solo a lot, but this build is for both solo Pve and group Pvp.

Pve  2hand                           Pve resto staff

1-brawler                             1-rapid regen

2-dizzying swing                   2-healing springs

3-stampede                          3-consuming trap

4-crystal blast                       4-streak

5-endless fury                       5-unstoppable

u- absorption field                 u-charged atronach

Pvp 2hand                            Pvp resto staff

1-brawler                             1-healing springs

2-boundless storm                2-equilibrium

3-stampede                          3-crystal blast

4-rally                                  4-streak

5-endless fury                       5-unstoppable

u-absorption field                  u-charged atronach (soon to be replaced with something more PvP group friendly)

As stated already it is hard to balance stamina and magika with this type of build. But it is extremely fun and Pve solo /  Pvp group friendly.

Hope this helps some, mostly in the Pve area that you are looking for.

note: I run the resto over destro staff out of PvP group balance.

That Kaboom build DOES look like fun, thanks for sharing the link, Sekkerhund!

It inspired me to put this together, and maybe try my hand at off-healing as well.

I've respecced my sorceror and am going with 5/3 heavy/light armor and destro staff/2H sword. After an initial few outings, I have to say it seems perfectly viable and is more fun for me than the cloth sorc. I'm only level 19 on that character, though, so we'll see  how it goes in the long run.

This is along the lines of the Kaboom Build - but I call it the the Liquid Storm Mage.

I use sword/shield primarily for the extra defense - as the shield has extra health on it also.   As well as morphing the third weapon skill to reflect single target spells back at the attacker which does damage and stuns them.   I cast it before attacking and since it last for 30 secs - let my stam build back up before casting Shield Assault which is the 4th weapon ability morphed - doing damage, stunning, and proccing a damage shield on me. As soon as I charge (always targeting the healer, if no healer a caster and if no healer or caster then anyone will do.)

Then as soon as I charge I cast Boundless Storm which does AE damage and buffs my armor and spell protection, then Liquid Lightning at my feet - more AE at my feet - and then go into a block since someone is usually doing a heavy attack on me.  I have the morph of Crystal Fragments that becomes insta cast which 90% of the time has procced by now and hit the target that is still standing.   I am also specced in all t6he passives of Storm Calling - including the one to instantly disintegrate low health enemies.

If anything is left alive - I am usually still close to full health... The Armor and Spell resists of Boundless Storm are amazing.  If a caster slips out of my circle of death I use Shield Assault again on them and recast my Defensive stance - then redo the rest of my skills.   I can effectively deal with 3-5 equal level mobs doing this and things just melt.   The trick is going into Block Mode after the initial 4 skills fire off since one or two - or of the mobs will be doing their heavy attack - and getting thrown back, stunned, knocked to the ground will create a very bad day.  But since all my AE's are proccing around me - I can go on defense the first coupl of secs and still be doing damage to the melee mobs.

I had a sorc all the way to lvl 46 and became frustrated with her.  I retired her to crafting and then restarted this one from the ground up after seeing a melee Battle Mage in action and have great fun with her.

Off-weapon is a Destro staff which I use for those boss mobs which seem to be able to do knock backs, stuns, or whatever on me through my blocks and resist my shield attacks.  I hate them!  I tell you I hate them.   But at least I am usually fighting them at equal level which was not the case with my Bow Mage.

As you might suspect she gets the name since she always looks like she's made of lightning and casts Liquid Lightning at her feet.

Of note, these 5 Heavy/2Light Sorc builds are great <50, but I have no idea how they will scale once you hit Vet ranks compared to the
"5 Light/2x" builds.  AFAIK, ZOS has still not really addressed the magicka vs. stamina "build balance" issue.

(and tbh, I don't know if they ever will, which is why I've questioned their statements of "it will take some time", which I read as "we're hoping that players find ways to get around it on their own"...)
