Hello,

After seeing so many posts and builds I've decided to write my own. I'm going to warn you now, if you are a Footman fanboy/girl you're not going to like what you read. I have had the pleasure of tanking some of the hardest content with some truly awesome players. I also like to tinker and find ways to tweak (thx to my grammar Nazi guildie for correcting my spelling) my builds to meet the challenges I come across. The wonderful thing about ESO is there is 50 flavors of Vanilla (it use to be 100 flavors, but ZoS keeps screwing with us). Most of my experience is from Stam based. So here are some of my personal Favorite Builds/Sets, and comments on other sets.

Tava's Favor- The Ulti Generating Monster. Yngol from Mercs turned me onto this set-up After he ran it on the PTS. Combined with Bloodspawn and Potentates or Pariah/ Enduarance is awesome for Trials and Vet...CP Dungeons alike. A variation of it is located Here. Keep a eye out for the Dragon set!

Hist Bark- I must say I love this set. I still use this set. 20% Dodge chance while blocking. Great set for new tanks to break in with. When I need a solid set-up I default to this. I use something slightly different, but the meat of one of my set-up is located Here

Armor Master- What can I say about AM... IMO it is Overkill.. by alot. There was a build that I saw where the person was hitting 40K armor. The issue with that is when you get your armor shattered, it don't matter how much you have/don't have, it's all gone regardless. However, it is one of the 50 Flavors. I find the mechanics of it to be en-cumbersome. However it suits some peoples play style. I'll post the link when I find it again.

Footman's Fortune- The most over-used, Over hyped set in the game. At first glance it seems like a wonderful set. and when we were all V12 it was a awesome set. (because it had jewelry). However, with the game being what it is the set is no longer good for anyone wearing Heavy Armor (HA). The Diminishing Returns kill it. "BUT BUT BUT" you might be sputtering. The proof is HERE and further explained Here, Post #156 some more. The basics work like this, the more Armor you have, the less you get. Most set-ups that use 5+ HA only get 3-4%.. if that, from Footman, if you are Armor capping, 1% or less.. But there is a saving grace. FF may be viable if you decide to tank in LA or MA. Less Armor, less Diminishing Returns. If I find a build that uses Footman's well I will post a link to it.

Lunar Bastion- I do not have a full set yet, but know Tanks who are loving it.

Alkosh- Great set for Debuffing the boss and increasing your groups DPS. some combo's are; 5 Bastion, 5 Alkosh, 2 Bloodspawn. or 5 Tava's, 5 Alkosh, 2 Bloodspawn. My Set-up is located below.

Ebon/Worm/Hircine's- Ebon is great in Trials to give the group a bit more survive-ability, Hircines helps you as a Stam tank, but there are better things... Worm, unless your a Magicka Tank this is purely a "Help out the trial/group and run it.... and bitch and moan till someone else runs it" set. There are others, but they are a bit more on the fringe. Not to say they don't have Merit. There is also changes coming in the next update. Some of the newer/ Updated set are located HERE, they look to be rather interesting.

Undaunted/Other sets:

Bloodspawn- Armor/ Spell Resist and a Ulti bump...I love this set. Very hard for any tank to pass it up.

Engine Guardian- Awesome set if you don't have Max CP and having sustain issues.

Pariah- the 5p Bonus is a bit too flaky for my taste. However I do run 3p of it same as Footman up to the 4P but with better stats. Endurance- With all of these sets, you get much more bang for your buck then you do with a 5P set. So the following are some of the set-ups I use with Great to Ok (worm) success. You might notice Spell Sym on all of my bars. (I morph it to Balance). For instances where I am using a lot of Magicka, I cook it off once twice to get a big infusion of Magicka back..... You have to be VERY careful using it of course.

Races- Imperial or Nord. Redguard might work out well

Stat Goals- 30k Health, 30k Stam, >10k Magicka

Food- Blue Health/Stam Food (CP150), Purple Tri-Stat food if Running Ebon Some of the Facts I have learned in my time Tanking:

  • Some of the Facts I have learned in my time Tanking:

    • You DON'T need 33k+ armor to tank end-Game Instances/ Trials. anything ≤40% Mitigation is fine
    • You DON'T need 38-45K Health, <25K is really pushing it and making it hard on your healers, 28-34K I have found to be Ideal.

My Tava Set-up

I must say I am loving this set-up, I have plenty of resources, Mitigation, and Utility. On top of that I am looking forward to the next update and replacing my Endurance/Pariah with Dragon. The basic idea is to generate Ulti as fast as possible, then cooking off a Ultimate to get resources back. I use 6HA/1MA or a 5/1/1 and Elude for the dodge, Elude gives more time with every MA piece. SO here is the Abilities I generally run with.

Bar 1- Utility Bar

  1. Unrelenting Grip- Pulls mobs to you, refunds the cost if they are immune
  2. Balance- you sack Health for Magicka, be very careful using it. Gives Major Ward and Major Resolve for 4 sec after use.
  3. Inner Rage- Ranged Taunt, Magicka based (to save some Stamina
  4. Choking Talons- CC and Debuff (Minor Maim)
  5. Defensive Stance- Decreases block cost & Increases Damage blocked by 8%. Reflects Spells. Note- I use this instead of Absorb Magic because there are times where you will still take damage when using Absorb Magic. Anything over the amount healed you still take as damage.
  6. Ultimate- Magma Shield- Caps damage to 3% of your Max health, puts a Very strong shield on close allies for 10 sec. Great "O Sh!t" button.

 Bar 2- Tanking Bar

  1. Defensive Stance- See Above
  2. Pierce Armor- Your taunt and bread and butter. If this is up then the mob is Always debuffed. Ransack doesn't give enough to make it worth while.
  3. Heroic Strike- Debuff and extra Ulti Generation. Apply it every time the extra Ulti generation falls off.
  4. Elude/Shuffle- Elude is for PvE, Shuffle for PvP. I use Elude for the extra time for every MA piece worn. Keep it up 100% of the time.
  5. Igneous Shield- Extra Ulti generated every 6 seconds. You can Use ANY Earthen Heart ability. I like to shield the people around me and provide a little more protection for my group. But it is flexible depending on your taste.
  6. Aggressive Warhorn- Will restore a ton of resources for you and give your DD's a great boost. Win/Win

Ebon Set-up

My Ebon set-up, I tried to work around my existing Tava as much as possible. You DO NOT want to use S&B Ebon. there is currently a bug where when you swap bars and have Ebon as S&B it sometimes does not re-apply the Ebon buff to the group. I normally use Blue Health/Stam food, however when running Ebon I switch to Purple tri-stat Food. It evens out my stats a bit better, lowering health and giving more Magicka.

Alkosh

Alkosh, Massive AOE (small range tho) DPS and DeBuff. I am actually really liking it. Awesome for Tanking Vet Dungeons and Off Tanking Trials

Addon's

I believe that there are 2 Addons that help us immensely for Tanking. One is aptly named "Tank"

So is you haven't noticed, it puts a Timer in your cross-hairs. This is a GODSEND for axes in vAA.

The 2nd is called "Mitigation Percent"

Not as important as "Tank" but still very handy for knowing what your Mitigation is at.

Happy Tanking!

P.S- if you can think of a better title, let me know LOL
