The Quest Of Donulliam: CHAPTER 2: Darkness Rising

By: Donaliam

The land of Wales is a large farming region and community that sits near the borders west of Ascalon City. Near the center of Wales is the market place, a small garrison with gaurds from Ascalon City, and a temple. Wales has many other smaller outposts and villages through out its region

For many years, the land of Wales has had some of the farm towns and villages near the Great Northern Wall raided by two races, the Krug and the Charr. The Krug were a goblin like race that were what the towns folks called a "Greenskin Race." For the most part the Krug raided with small groups and were easily chased off and usually slaughtered by the Charr. The Charr were a race of beastmen that worship the Flames. They saw the flames as their Gods and if it could burn they would burn it. When the Charr would raid a town there would be nothing left but a smoldering pile. The Charr never ventured too far into the land of Wales, however there were times it seemed as though the Charr would attack just testing the defenses of the humans. Some feared theat the Charr and the Krug would form an alliance however most believed that it would not happen. The Krug feared the Charr. Why the Charr never bothered to conquer Krug is mystery to all of Ascalon.

Goibniu and Donulliam continued down the road toward the Wales town center, Donulliam was getting into a better mood. Goibniu had told Donulliam about a small armed Elven force that had passed through the town center earlier that day. Donulliam would have loved to hear more but his mind was on the girl working at his family's farm. She was the most beautiful girl that Donulliam had seen, and he didn't even know her name.

It was dusk when they reached the town center, Donulliam noticed the Elven force was still in town. Donulliam decided to talk to one of the Elven Soldiers. The Elven soldier he spoke was named Donaliam. Donulliam marveled at the fact that their names were so close. Donaliam was a swordmaster that was raised in a land called The Blighted Isle. Donaliam was young by Elf standards and had not seen many battles. Donulliam was fascinated to hear from Donalim but it was time to go. The Elven leader Daghdre had been summoned to a meeting in Ascalon. Donulliam and Donaliam had hoped they would meet again.

The next morning Donulliam went to continue his apprenticeship with the blacksmith hoping to take his mind further off the young girl working on the farm. This task was made easier by the fact the master smith need Donulliam to go to Ascalon City for supplies. Upon arriving at the city Donulliam was amazed by the flood of activity in the city. After getting all the supplies he needed Donulliam walked by The Ascalon Guard recruiting office and decided to walk in. Inside was Prince Rurik. Prince Rurik instantly recognized Donulliam and spoke with him. Donulliam was now old enough to join the Guard. Donulliam told Prince Rurik that he will deeply consider joining. On the return home Donulliam began dreaming of what his life could be like as a Guard. Donulliam decided he was going to join the Guard. Now came the most difficult task, telling his father. All the way home Donulliam pondered at how he was going to tell his father. He finally figured what he was going to say when Donulliam here a loud crash. Donulliam was not sure of were the crash had come from so he climbed a tree to get a better look. He saw smoke rising in the distance, from what looked to be the Wales town center. Donulliam rushed to the center to find some of the buildings burning and dead guards in the street. He went to the blacksmith's shop to find it in utter ruin. Just then coming d own the street was a ghastly sight, A Charr warrior. The Charr stood there glaring at Donulliam with hunger in his eyes. The Charr the raised both of his great axes and began charging at Donulliam. Donulliam noticed out of the corner of his a sword at his feet. He waited for the right moment. As the Charr got closer and pulled back both his axes, Donulliam dove under his swing, grabbed the sword and in a quick motion sliced the back leg of the Charr. The Charr screamed out with pain and rage as it turned around to attack again. This time Donulliam went on the offensive and swiped at the Charr. His blade knocked away one of the axes and allowed Donulliam a chance to stab the Charr. Donulliam the pierced the armor and stabbed straight through the heart of the Charr warrior. The Charr then fell dead at Donulliam's feet. Just then an arrow went through Donulliam's lower leg. He turned to see a shocking site, a Krug Archer. The archer began raising his bow for another shot. He placed an arrow on the string but before he could pull it back and take aim he was decapitated by Goibniu. Goibniu went to his cousin's side and removed the arrow. The wound was not bad and Donulliam was able to walk without much difficulty. Donulliam asked what was happening and Goibniu told him the Charr and the Krug were attacking together. They had hit farms and other villages all over the area. Donulliam them found a horse and began to ride toward his family's farm. Goibniu remained in the town center to help out there.

Donulliam arrived at the farm and was horrified at what he saw. The fields were scorched and covered with the bodies of the farm hands, the farm house was nothing but rubble and the main house was smoldering. Donulliam began searching for his family. He found them. His father, Liam and his mother, Bernie were burned to death in the main house. His sister was outside the ruined farm house with her dismembered body placed on spikes. Among the horror he did not see the girl of his dreams. Donulliam then heard a moan and the girls father barely alive. He told Donulliam that she was alive and taken prisoner by men who seemed to be ordering the Charr and Krug. The father asked Donulliam to find her. Donulliam vowed he would not rest until she was found and her family avenged. Donulliam then asked the father what was your daughter's name but he passed on before he could tell him.

Donulliam returned to the town center and told his cousin what he ad seen. Goibniu was optimistic about rebuilding the farm and the city was possible but it was gonna take some work. Donulliam told Goibniu "I am not staying Goibniu, I must find Saria and avenge my family. I am going to Ascalon and joining the Guard." Goibniu pleaded with Donulliam to stay but he knew that Donulliam was not going to stay. Goibniu watch as his cousin had set off to Ascalon City.
