GW2 Raids - Updated

-VERY IMPORTANT-

If you can attend pls pls pls respond and join the raid event. Click on the big 'Request to Join' button. I will cross-reference with our master spreadsheet so that everyone on the sheet gets priority. This is going to be the main way I can keep track of who's in and who's out. You must sign up by 6pm Thursday Nov 19, so I can make any changes we need to teams.

Raiding Plan

  • Aiming to be a mid level raid group.
  • We will raid as a group once a week on Fridays @ 6pm PST for a min of 2hrs and a max of 3. This tends to be the sweet spot in my experience. However if any group wishes to push further that is ok so long as the team is still in good spirits and we aren't bordering on frustration. Sometimes it's ok to just walk away.
  • Please come on a class you know how to play well. It's hard enough to learn a raid without having to learn a class as well.
  • Gliding appears to be used in at least 1 of the raid wings after Pylons. Try to get it unlocked at least to updrafts.
  • Group has set the gear minimum to be full exotics w/ ascended trinkets. Ascended Weapons should be first priority over armor but we should all be working toward at least 1 full set for you main class.
  • Try to have each weapon available for you class to offer the group more flexibility. Weapons should be exotics though it is encouraged that for your main set you try for ascended.
  • If you need cheap & effective exotic armor sets: with HoT WvW armor will become salvageable. This means you can get any runes you put into it back.
  • Interested Raid Leaders willing to Lead if needed: Fallen, JKarser, Gideon. If anyone else is interested in learning to lead a raid team let me know.
  • Raid signups will more than likely be a first come first served based due to the 10 man limit. That said I'm sure we'd be able to find enough pugs/friends to top off any groups that are short a few players. Sign-ups aren't meant to be intimidating, they are simply there to make sure we have enough people to enter the raid. Everyone is always encouraged to sign up, even if groups appear to be full.
  • Communication is highly encouraged! Don't be afraid to speak up if you have suggestions or ideas!

The All Things Raiding Google Doc

The google doc linked above is going to be our holy grail of raiding info and how I'm going to attempt to keep track of who wants to raid, raid teams once we get settled, builds, build links, raiding experience etc. If you are interested in raiding PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add yourself to the doc under the appropriate category. The more information you are willing to share with the group the easier it will be to balance experienced raiders with new raiders and help the teams succeed in general. Everyone should be able to add and remove things from the doc so if you find build links, or interesting links in general that you'd like to share feel free to add them.

Tips n' Tricks

Below is a guide that I had made back when I was raiding in Warhammer and still use for FF14, only now I've tailored it to GW2 raiding. Some of it will not be applicable (mtx primers I'm looking at you!) as this is just a beta weekend but I hope you guys find at least a bit of value in it as it's something that one of the groups I plan to raid with is going to use.

Very interested!

These are the builds I'll be prepared to bring for the first raid after launch.  I have ascended gear for each.

  • condi engi
  • Chronomancer (pending unlock)
  • Herald (pending unlock)

Turns out I'm not the only one who had lots of trouble with staff ele in the first encounter -- WoodenPotatoes also gave up on it after multiple attempts.  Just not the right class/ weapon combo for that first raid boss, and ultra squishy to boot.  Since I suck at other weapons on Ele, I'm withdrawing myself as an Ele.

I do have a fair bit of experience on condi Engy btw, since it was my main in WvW and PVP for almost a year.  I'm fairly experienced with other Engy builds too.

I'm definitely interested if the timing fits my schedule. Edit: That timeslot works for me.

I am comfortable running:

PS Warrior

Berserker Tank/cc I have been theorycrafting that I wouldn't mind trying out

             Berserker Tank/CC Build

Staff Ele

Herald DPS/Buffs OR Tank/CC

Dps/Buffs(Shiro/Glint)(over 10 hours on this last beta weekend)

             DPS/Buff Herald Build

           Tank/cc(Jalis/Glint)(mostly theorycrafted)

           Tank/CC Herald Build

Thief Dps/Stealth

Druid Healer (Watched the skills demonstration to understand their skills and was a raid healer in wow for multiple years so I can probably handle learning its complexity while trying the raid)

            Druid Healer Build Theorycraft

Can you tell I'm excited about raiding?

I would like to take on a DPS role. I would be comfortable with a Reaper/Necromancer or a Chronomancer. I will try out the Scrapper and see how it goes.

It occured to me I didn't post my stuff lol.

Guardian - DPS burst/burning - gs + s/t or Scep/shield. Can spec for boon share/heal if needed

Warrior - P/S warrior

Reaper - shout - gs + s/d- spews group might like a boss (over 40+ hrs played over beta weekends)

Rev - shiro/glint or shiro/ malyax with d/d + staff (staff 2 for breakbars)

Ele - staff - not very knowledgeable (icebow for breakbars) - played a couple hrs as tempest and found fire overload to be nice for dps

Ranger - double longbow (wiling to roll if we need a ranger for whatever reason and no one has one

One thing everyone should make sure their build have is access to hard and soft cc for breakbars. Those seem to be a common thing for HoT enemies. Ill update with my possible builds once i have a pc and not a phone lol

Soren, something you need to know about ice bow.  Announced yesterday, goes into effect Tuesday. Still might be useful but since soft CCs work on breakbars too now, maybe  not the best choice anymore.  We can experiment.

MORE about raids from TwitchCon:  http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2/v/17873577?t=2m07s

I understand raids will use the same new squad system they showed in the WvW segment yesterday.

In WvW you need a tag, in PVE you can make a "leaderless squad" with up to 10 people (although using a tag lets you do more, like shift folks around between groups)

AND.... going forward gliding will be a freebie.   It'll unlock for you as soon as you get out of the first story instance.

I can give the Druid heal build a try provided I can get sufficient practice in the beta before the raid starts.  Otherwise, I can bring a standard frost spirit/spotter build on my ranger.

I could also bring a Burn Guardian.

A couple things that apply specifically to this event:

1) You have to use your beta character which means a few things

     A) If your playing a Ranger or Engi you need t make sure you have created a beta one and played enough to get to the point you can enter the raid. This should only take 30 minutes max for the tutorial in SW and the first story mission(which you can technically skip by quitting in the middle of it).

     B) We will only have access to exotic armor/weapons, minimum bag space and a only a few options for food/utils. This means you may have to play with your stat allocations more than usual to get your desire stat spread.

 2) Probably still not going to have guilds in beta, so make sure your in Gamevox when looking to form up for the raid.

 3) Definitely practice some gliding before raid time. We know they are giving everyone gliding and we know the raid boss will require the use of it, so make sure your comfortable with the mechanic beforehand. Its not hard to do but definitely will be easier to get the hang of when not in the high pressure situation of a raid.

I tried to RSVP for the calendar event Soren but the only option was "Cancel Availability", so I assume you (or someone else) found a way to add all of us without the need for RSVP.

Second is the plan for the whole group to go into the encounter blind? Since it will be well after the beta goes live there will no doubt be tons of information about the encounter (mechanics, timers, strategies) and what team compositions people are using.

I guess what I am asking is should I avoid looking at this stuff or venturing in ahead of our event time so we are all fresh to the encounter?

Lastly we should probably figure out who is bringing what (with a few people having multiple options to swap to) this week ahead of time so people can make sure they have what they need in theirs banks and can create their beta characters and get them ready ahead of time. I suggest picking profession & role in a reverse order by comfortable classes/roles with the last 3-4 having at least 2 characters of different roles ready in case we get into the raid and find out we don't need 3 full time healers or we need a lot more CC.

As far as going in blind: I'd like to preserve the experience for us to learn as we go but in all honesty if you guys want to check it out before hand, or read up on things people will be posting feel free. That said I would ultimately like us to develop our own strats rather than rely on others, and turning to posts or guides as a last ditch kind of thing. Part of the fun for me at least when raiding is the actuall figuring out of things.

Ok I'm going to main a guard for this event -> full set of Sinister (balefire runes) if available with Valkyrie trinkets. GS with zerker stats & sword/torch with Givers stats, again if possible. Weapon sigils will depend on the encounter but for the most part it'll be Accuracy/Force/Bursting/Malice/Smoldering.

I will also plan to have a full set of zerker gear/trinkets/weapons with sigils of strength/force.

My Necro will be a straight up condi build.

Rev I'll use full berserker armor/weapons/accessories with Scholar runes, and either Force/Air/Strength/Nullification sigils. s/s & staff

Metabattle has the current dungeon meta build.

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Ranger_-_S/A_LB_Spotter

The big things that will definitely carry over if you want to be DPS Ranger in the raid are spotter trait in the skrimishing line, nature's vengeance in the nature magic line and frost spirit as one of your slot skills because all 3 provide great party dps buffs.

Other spirits are also great in party situations.

Quicking Zephyr is a great self dps buff.

Some of the signets can be very powerful self help tools for certain situations as well.

We Heal as One heal skill can be used to copy boons between yourself and you pet if you don't need to heal yourself because dedicated healers are keeping you healed.

Also direct damage pet families (such as the feline family) are the ideal pets for a power build.

There is also a condi based Dungeon build that uses only Axe/Torch along with the Quick Draw trait to have the Torch 5 skill "bonfire" constantly on a reduce cooldown and using it to stack insane amounts of burning. This build seems a harder to play and less malleable to situations though.

Ok so based off of the last few posts so far our starting group comp will be:

Guardian, Tempest, Elementalist, Ranger

Jay can you bring a reaper to start?
Gaspara can you bring a warrior to start?
Pua can you bring a guard?
Cyvil can you bring a warrior?

IoWegian & JKarser I'm not sure what you guys play or have available but would either of you be able to bring a Revenant or possibly another Ele?

If anyone has any suggestions for a viable starting group comp let me know. By no means is this set in stone, it is just giving us a starting point.

I'm currently leaning heavily toward playing Herald. I plan to have builds and gear to play 3 different roles Tank/CC, Dps/Buffer, Healer/Support buffer. That way if we find we need more of something I can easily switch between them.

If we have only 1 or no one that wants to play Druid full healer I will probably switch to that because its seems to strong healing not to have at least 1 or 2 right now.

If some people are still unsure of what they want to play a few suggestons of things that could be very useful  and might not get thought of are:(Note: These are just some idea I had to give people some ideas of builds they can try or ideas on how to rate their own build i the 3 roles of control, damage, and heal/support.)

  • PS Warrior using banners
  • Front line CC berserker like i mentioned in my earlier post.
  • Chronomancer (potentially one based around slow if that effects bosses other than as a weak cc, a Scep/Shield Staff condi build might work here for a ranged build) A control and buff mesmer/chrono is also an option.
  • Front line cc Scrapper- Maybe something starting out looking like this?
  • DPS + chill Reaper
  • Full Healer Druid
  • Elementlist/Tempest either Mixed role of the current dps meta or a singular dps or healer/support focused tempest
  • Full Healer Gaurdian - Something very close to this perhaps

Also a few things I have mentally compiled about what I think the boss fight while involve:(Note: This is mostly educated guesswork based of things that were said during twitchcon, the original raid video and previous ANet comments about the raids)

Will have an unavoidable aoe HIGH damage attack that covers the entire area and players must be flying to avoid. Make sure your comfortable with a glider, possibly with updrafts.

Will have a split dps portions because he will somehow block the players inside the area and the blocking object must be destroyed to allow players to leave the area before the big attack.

Some sort of breakbar mechanic to enforce the control role.

Some sort of timer that we must defeat him in or bad stuff (higher damage, no reviving, no healing, instant death, etc.) happens.

A single enemy fight that is more about learning mechanics, roles, glider usage since it is the first boss. This means aoe skills(other than those with multiple hits on large hit box units) and abilities will be less effective.

Hey Soren,

Sorry for the late reply. I can bring an Ele. I'm pretty familiar with most of the classes, particularly Ele, so feel free to just let me know whatever you'd like me to take up. Just a side note, I main a D/D ele but I am also familiar with staff ele and even some of Tempest so I'm good for whatever. Looking forward to the event!

IoWegian, if your comfortable playing Warrior you could play that.

Soren asked me to play Warrior while I was typing up my long message (over the course of multiple breaks here at work) stating I was leaning heavily toward playing a Revenant because it will likely be my main come HoT.

As far as group comp Soren we should probably have at least 3 people ready to play their character either as a dps or with a lot of control abilities as a breakbar specialist. We should also have at least 2 people highly dedicated to healing, 1 of which being druid because the sheer amount of healing they have makes me think it a lot of healing will be needed.

So something like:

  1. Dps
  2. Dps
  3. Dps
  4. Dps
  5. Dps (with control or hybrid build/gear ready)
  6. Dps (with healing or hybrid build/gear ready)
  7. Control (with dps build/gear ready)
  8. Control (with dps build/gear ready)
  9. Healer
  10. Healer (with dps build/gear ready)

By the way if anyone wants help/guide trying to make a build for their class that fits well into a certain role or a hybrid of certain roles I will probably be available from 4-6pm tonight(before the beta so it will be more theorycrafted) or 1pm-4pm tomorrow(during the beta), just ask or find me on gw2/gamevox.

Note: I am one of those kind of people that will try and help you learn why I think you should use a certain weapon/skill/trait, sometimes even if the person doesn't care to know, just ask my wife.

Ya Gaspara that works perfectly! I'll update the main post to indicate everyone's initial starting class.

One thing I'll need to know for you guys testing druid - can you figure out if it is going pure heal or if it is still able to do semi decent dps?

Since we don't know what to expect other than GW2 raids are supposed to be different from the norm I'm not sure for the first few runs I'd want to sacrifice raw power for raw healing since everyone can bring a bit of healing on their own. I would say if we do need a druid we can get someone to spec into that a bit further in if we find our own heals and passives can't keep up with what's happening.

So in my mind I'd swap the healers for power/condi until we know for sure we need mega heals.

If I'm not mistaken Rangers have an awesome group heal? And if us guards trait Virtues: Absolute Resolution & Battle Presence. Warriors have banners, Eles have water.... just spitballing ideas here :)

I'll be on a good chunk of Friday evening prepping 4 toons for various roles as needed so feel free to pop into vox if you see me :D

I am fairly confident that dedicated healers are going to be needed for the raids as when they were revealing the details of the Druid on stage at twitchcon they stated something along the lines of "Druids will put out a level of burst healing never before seen in Gw2. This will make them highly sought after for raid groups."

Additionally I think the fact that they have been stressing the control, damage, healing/support trinity lately highly suggests that dedicated roles per encounter will be needed. Which is why I had multiple people ready to swap traits/skills/gear to be either but assume something like 6/2/2 composition will be typical.

Personally when attempting the content for the first time I'd want to tip the balance in favor of healing because that gives more room for error in reacting to the mechanics when your first learning them. Getting through a full cycle of a bosses first form mechanics, even if you have barely scratched his hp, gives the players more information about what mechanics there are that need to be dealt with while doing damage to the boss.

I can bring a guardian and will set up a build like the one Gaspara linked in the post above which is similar to the bunker guardian I used to play in spvp.

Rangers have Healing Spring, an AoE heal which is now a trap.  It was bugged because it was not healing properly.  The ranger pets were not getting healed.  You have to go outside the trap radius and reenter when your health was down.  This and some other bugs may not have been fixed.

https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/professions/ranger/So-is-Healing-Spring-gonna-get-fixed

If you want the ranger to focus on healing, it may be better to have them spec as a Druid.

Soren that is cool, the healing role is not for everyone, my wife too likes to smash things.I also don;t think it will be a problem since form what I have seen in other games GSCH has a ton of people who LOVE the healer role, some of them even stopped playing gw2 but may come back if they find the healer role is a thing now.

I have played the buffing/healer class for as long back as I can remember in multiplayer rpgs, so that thought that it could be needed in gw2 even just for raids intrigues me. I was a a zero dps upkeep healer monk and later ritualist in gw1 and a priest in WoW for 4-5 years raiding.

So in most rpgs my wife smashs things and i make sure she doesnt get smashed back and it works great.

Kt, this will be the first beta weekend with the druid so no one has gotten a crack at it yet so your on even ground. Give it a try tomorrow or during the day saturday and if you decide you don't feel comfortable with the special mechanic enough to be able to also focus on the raid mechanics(or just plain don't like it) I'll play druid and you can role dps ranger. I really don't mind doing it if your uncomfortable or worried about learning new class mechanics while learning/surviving raid mechanics.

It will be interesting to see if direct healing is the _only_ way to go for the raid encounter we get to see this weekend.  Reading the raids forum on the gw2 site, it seems a lot of teams plan to try mitigation too -- Guardian in particular.   (Also nearly universal: 2 PS warriors w/ banners.)  I guess we'll need to experiment, but mitigation like Aegis is an alternative to just pumping out non-stop direct heals, and sometimes a lot easier if movement is needed.

PS Soren -- You have me listed as Ele/Tempest, but I feel Tempest is a support hybrid.  An Auramancer build (tempest OR ele) for group shocking aura might be good for breaking breakbars, depending on the boss (and raid comp) -- dunno.  I was planning to start on Ele / dps.  Will bring whatever you need though :)

Otherwise I have been playing with a PS hybrid (Defense instead of strength) or full on DPS. I do bring banners along, in any case, so may have to coordinate builds a bit.

Lakshmi, it will be interesting to see, unfortunately its entirely possible this first encounter will not actually tell us.

My guess is at some point during the raids there will be areas that deal ticking damage for being in them that will give little warning to move out and make survival through aegis less effective at least for that fight. In most games with raids even if players aren't messing up they take a bit of damage over time to mechanics to force healing even in perfect runs. The way they have been talking about damage, control, support; the way they have been talking about having to switch up your builds/gear between encounters; the difficulty hyping they have been doing; and the talk of druid being highly sought after leads me to believe focused healing will definitely be required at some for some encounters.

But the best bet, is to be enthusiastic and ready for anything!

Gaspara I don't disagree, especially having raid-healed in quite a few MMOs now.  But the thing I've seen elsewhere in responses to the Druid quote you mention: plenty of people interpret it to mean that, in raids, GW2's combat system somehow reverts to a holy trinity combat system.  I don't think that's a realistic view.  Even with elite specs, most of GW2's combat is still exactly how it is right now before HoT.

BTW, I don't mean to imply you feel that way -- it's perfectly clear that you don't!  As you say, we just need to be ready for anything -- including some encounters that require pre-elite specialization tactics. :)

That's right to a point JK. My understanding is that once I set up a raid squad (tags are needed) I will have the ability to sort you in to 5 man teams or whatever we happen to need and buffs will be prioritized by those sub-groups.

My bad Shimi, I will change that to ele/dps :)

Cyvil a PS warrior would be fantastic!

And back to the interesting healer discussion we have: I don't think we're going to see gw2 adopt a full on holy trinity, that would go against the way they've built up each classes utilities and skills. I'd think they would stay something similar to soft trinity but require certain encounters to need a massive infusion of healing making the option to need druid viable. Like GAspara said I bet we'll run in to a mechanic at some point that deals DoT and a Druid will flat out heal better than a Guard with ageis. I'd also agree that all the encounters will not require elite specs, but a soild mix of base and new. Which gives us a tonne of options a flexibility.

PS: Seems like we have quite a few more folks interested in joining us. If you guys are out and about can you promote the event a bit for me in guild and we'll see if we can't get a 2nd team going? I think we need a few more more for that to happen. I'll let everyone know too once I get on :D

I think at least a semi hard balance of this trinity will have to come into play. If they don't force players to give up dps abilities for control or healing/survival abilities raids will turn into our current meta but only better players can beat it. If there isn't unavoidable damage that must be survived berserker(or condi alternative) remains the only stat combinations worth using (something they have promised will change) so something with that has to change for their statement to be true.

They have introduced and made changes to ALOT of things related to healing in recent months that I think have gone largely unnoticed because the current content and meta playstyles don't need them. I think there is a good chance we will find guardian, revenant/herald, ele, tempest, and druid all can be traited and geared to be mostly survival/healing that will allow others in the raid to focus more on dps. I also think similar control focused build will come out so that others don;t have to give up key dps skills/traits or switch weapons to get enough control abilities to break stun bars or keep certain enemies stunlocked or constantly interrupted.

My main points of the last paragraph boils down to the raid mechanics are likely already require fairly high communication, which likely will result in the easiest method (aka meta) swinging towards builds specialized in performing roles. Having someone who is built around being able to throw 6 disables in 10 seconds, or apply perma-chill, or make sure the boss in interrupted all 4 times in a row he attempts to kill everyone or heal an entire party 5k every single second non stop is way easier than communicating rotating each players stun to ensure permanent up time or constantly having to stack up and stop dpsing to blast water fields.

Some things that have probably gone mostly unnoticed by the player base at large that suggests my theory:

1) Look at the healing for the below class specified in the parenthesis:

  1.  Guardians (look at signet of courage and merciful invention, and of course all of the standard guardian healing)
  2. Tempest (look at Wash Away the Pain, Water Overload, and water attunement warhorn skills)
  3. Engineer (look at the new med kit, elixir gun, alchemy trait line, and inventions trait line, and for the scrapper add the ranged revive)
  4. Revenant Ventari(look at the staff, ventari legend and especially the number of +healing % effectiveness traits in the salvation trait line)

All can heal and provide team survival ALOT better than people think. Which means there are 4 possible alternatives to Druid, each with their own playstyle, method and their own offerings in the damage and control portions.

2) Taunt was added as a control to the game. This new control does exactly what it does for tank is more other games, it forces ai control for a period of time. PvP had no need for this they are struggling to balance it for PvP so it must have been added for PvE reasons. The most likely us for this is there will be times (likely in the raids) where certain controllable units must be kept distracted, potentially prevented from using their non auto attack skills (interrupted) or positioned in certain places for the good of the team. While only revenant, berserker, and ranger have access to this it may be that rather than being needed it just makes their job easier in those situations and a mesmer/chrono or thief/daredevil with an interrupt builds could do the same task.

Started playing the beta this morning and set up my guardian following the build posted by Gaspara.  The only difference is that I did not have sigils listed in his build.  Also, I'm starting with a mix of Cleric and Magi gear.  Both have healing but Magi has vitality.

I progressed to the fight with the Legendary Wyvern which I did twice.  I focused on healing the group and rezzing the downed. Because I was not in a party, I was unable to evaluate how effective my healing was in the fights.

I unlocked the gliding mastery and practiced that skill a bit in case it's required for the raid.

Any tips for positioning as a healer during fights?  Should I hang to the rear of the party I'm in? Stay to one side? In the middle?

A couple of tips gleaned yesterday, and from the forums.

First, we can't enter the raid until the new Squad UI is fixed -- we need to be in a "Raid" squad to enter.  Not yet fixed early Saturday morning but the BWE is pretty pointless if they don't get it fixed so I'm expecting we'll see the fix by raid time. /fingercrossed

Next, it's been confirmed gliding is not needed for the raid.

Third, you don't need to do the story to enter Verdant Brink.  Here's how:

  • Create new character (you'll start in the Silverwastes story instance)
  • Press B and go to WvW
  • Press B and "Leave the Mists" (you'll be ported into Verdant Brink right next to the raid entrance)

Note - you may see the Silverwaste loading screen briefly, before landing in VB.

You'll need to do the story on one character if you want to unlock masteries (like gliding), but this is a quick technique to skip the story as needed.  I did this for my backup characters.

Since it appears we will have to wait until HoT is released and use our regular characters (instead of beta ones) in the raid, I would prefer to bring my ranger instead of a guardian.  I already have a full set of ascended gear (armor, trinkets, and weapons) on my ranger and have used the frost spirit/spotter build in dungeons.  I have no ascended armor on my guardian and do not plan to craft any as I use that character primarily for spvp and some WvW.

Lakshmi they said at some point that you will be locked into combat during boss fights, but otherwise normal combat rules apply. So you can kill the trash then switch traits and gear. Fight the boss, if you lose you can switch traits and gear before engaging again, etc.

I didn't get in to try it live, but this is what they said for how it should work.

Since they extended the beta weekend into this morning I went in alone, in my own squad, and tested.  Yeah, you drop combat between fights.   And no, I didn't solo the bosses.  I glided over to raptor island and tested there.  Also agro'd the first encounter and ran away to drop combat.

Just wanna throw out there that I'm still good to use an Ele for the raid launches and I'd prefer to go DPS on him since all my ascended gear is DPS oriented (don't worry, he's not full zerker!). I also have a full PVT ascended guardian that I could try running Altruistic Healing on to see how that helps out with things. At some point, I'll end up getting ascended armor for my little engi asuran (think I might make Knight's for him) and he'll be fully ascended as well.

That's good to know. Means we can swap builds/gear as needed between encounters.

Looks like a coordinated team beat it last night after about 5-6 hrs of trying, so it's very doable but it isn't a cake walk either. I encourage anyone that can get in to go in and mess around if you can. More we learn the better we'll be come live :)

And because the question come up yesterday: exotics with ascended trinkets & weapons if possible will be mandatory for this first part of the raid wing, so that's what we'll aim for when we this goes live. I don't expect anyone to have a billion ascended sets to swap in and out of, so exotic is going to be our baseline to work from. That said everyone should be working toward getting at least 1 full set of ascended gear if you don't have it already -> can use our market and FVC to help offset the costs and give our crafters awesome things to do :D

A few other things worth noting that I have seen.

  1. We will definitely need a mix of power and condition damage builds. Some things will be immune to one or the other.
  2. A dedicated healing druid was used by most and they don't regret it, another healing focused build could possibly replace the druid.
  3. Damage dealers should remain in almost entirely damage stat gear (berserkers/sinister/rampager)
  4. Mobs inside the raid seem to prioritize aggro o the nearby player with the most toughness. This means a player can build with more toughness to encourage the boss to wail on them instead of someone at random. A psuedo-tank if you will.
  5. Control abilities (knockback especially but also stun, daze, knockdown, pull, etc.) will definitely be needed but the first boss doesn't require a player specifically dedicated to a control task.
  6. Positioning is very important as some bosses will cleave (do damage to the area around the person they are attacking) and sometimes a certain number of players will need to stand in a certain area.
  7. Boon stripping is needed at times.
  8. There is an enrage timer, meaning the boss must be defeated in a certain amount of time before he basically kills everyone. This means maxing out damage whenever possible is necessary.
  9. There are multiple stages in some boss fights.
  10. It looks both challenging and a TON of fun.

I will be going Revenant main in HoT. I will be changing my soldier's ascended armor to berserker's, finishing my weaponsmith ascended set for Revenant, will attempt to get an ascended staff (no 500 artificer right now) and maybe trying to craft a cleric's or knights set of ascended armor before the raid launches. So that I can be either a damage role or a healer/tankier role for raiding in HoT.

We should definitely have people who are interested in raiding start putting down the class, spec, and roles they will have ascended gear for in HoT so that we can tell how many are interested and try and make balanced groups by availability for raids release. We should try to avoid having 7 Rangers in group 1 and 0 Rangers in group 2, or the like.

Lakshmi - Yes, you can change builds between encounters.

For the Vale Guardian fight, the raid needs one player to tank and kite the boss.  This boss is very mobile, so DPS players must be able to do damage on the run.  A class that has to stand still to do damage will have a difficult time.

The boss periodically does AoE damage which must be soaked up by 4-5 players otherwise the entire raid wipes.  It will not matter that the raid has dedicated healers, the raid will wipe.

I have 500 on all ascended crafting professions so if you have the mats, I can craft the components for you. Just let me know if you want to! That goes for anyone else too btw, no charge. Granted, you'll still need to get to 500 crafting yourself to finish the item...

I will be maining my burn Guard for Raids and just started an ascended sinister set for him. I will also be attempting to get my Reaper kitted out in Ascended gear (sinister or rabid, haven't decided) and it will be a condi spec. If anything I have a set of soldiers exotic and can set my necro up to be a tank (kinda nice with shroud) if it is required and no one else wants to tank.

I will most likely in the very near future (couple weeks max and most likely on a fri or sat evening) post a meeting up on the calendar so that everyone interested in raiding can meet up so we can get some solid plans set up. This will include figuring out who has ascended gear, what classes are going to be mained, what classes people want to play, and perhaps figure out if we can help each other get at least 1 full ascended set. It will also give us a chance to set up some concrete raid groups and figure out what day we want to raid on and that work best for everyone.

I did spent a few hours testing the raid yesterday morning in pug groups.   We never got past the first split on the Vale Guardian, but I learned a lot :)  VERY cool fight, and everyone has a role to perform. (And wipes are easy if all the roles don't get done in time. =)  Coordination is king!

Gaspara mentioned a lot of details but I think these are the key ones:

  • you need both power damage dealers and condi damage dealers.
  • A little boon stripping is essential for one of the mini bosses and the Vale Guardian.  Direct damage is needed in the same situation, so a class than can do both is ideal (mesmer, reaper?)
  • As for the tank, it's simply the person with the highest toughness.  I learned this by trying to druid heal in Cleric's gear -- that boss was GLUED to me :P  (Needless to say we wiped.)  An actual tank who can guide the boss away from where the rest of the raid wants to stand can be very, very useful -- but only if he has more toughness than anyone else in the raid. :)

Beyond that, there seems to be quite a bit of flexibility in terms of raid composition.  The most success I saw in my pugs had to do with folks doing the tasks associated with the raid mechanics, not specific raid makeup.

Having been the only healer in the entire raid as a druid I think another supporty class per party (say, guardian) could have kept up with the non-avoidable damage.  At least in the part of the boss fight I saw.  There was a LOT of avoidable damage and probably 90%+ of the healing I did was because folks were not avoiding it.  Druid healing is awesome indeed, however, and x-party.  Possibly there's a lot more non-avoidable damage later in the fight and druid is needed.

FINALLY: not 100% sure I'll be sticking with Staff Ele.  I died a lot more on Ele than other classes, but those were also my earliest attempts before I knew where all the damage was coming from.  Damage on Ele was very good (and noticeable in kill speed vs my other runs), as well as a decent contributor even in the condi-only situations.  Other raid utility was a little meh.  I tried Tempest too, but I'm less convinced that brought enough to be helpful.

I'm updating my first post with other classes I can bring to this first raid.  I have ascended sets in all weights so that part is covered.

Hey all. Looking to have a quick meeting Saturday, Oct. 17 at 6:00PM - 7:00PM PST to go over what we want to do for raiding.

Things I'd like to cover:

  • set up any teams that need to be set
  • set up reserves (if not enough to make 2 teams) - The original team that I have here in this thread will remain as team 1
  • figure out everyone's raiding experience (new raiders always welcome)
  • set some general ground rules and expectations so there are no surprises going in
  • figure out a day and time that works best for raiding
  • figure out who has ascended gear, who needs it, and if the team can help each other get at least 1 full set and make sure everyone has at min full exotic with ascended trinkets
  • figure out what everyone's mains will be and what classes we have
  • figure out what builds we are all running

If the date and time don't work for everyone let me know. I have no plans that weekend so I'm pretty flexible

A few other things people should consider when working to prepare themselves for raids:

  1. Try and have decided which class or classes you want to focus on for raiding in HoT before the meeting and work to make sure you are comfortable with everything that class had to offer. The raids will be quite demanding of paying attention to mechanics and positioning that i you are also trying to learn how to play your class, your going to have a rough time.
  2. Have exotic versions of every weapon your class can play and try to understand in what situation you might choose to use that weapon instead of your main weapons, and make it with stats that will be the most beneficial in the scenario you might use it. If there are two situations you might use a specific weapon (such as I am facing with Revenant staff which can be used for dps, healing, or control/tanking) it does help to have multiple copies. For the weapons you use in your preferred role/situation try to get an ascended version with those stats as the damage different of ascended is quite noticeable.
  3. Try and come up with a condition damage build for your class. While not all classes are equal in this regard there definitely will be content that requires some condi damagers and the more mailable you are the most beneficial you can be to the team to adapt to unexpected mechanics. Additionally a build that gives up only a little bit of damage for more control (stun, daze, knockback, knockdown, etc.) ability is also a good idea to try.
  4. DO NOT go out and buy new runes/sigils just yet. With the release of HoT we already know we will get at least a handful of new runes. No one yet knows if any of these new runes/sigils will be the new best rune for your build, so it is definitely worth waiting to see what HoT brings in that regard.

If you need any help with understanding roles you can play or how you can add a little more control or a little more healing or how to come up with a good condi build for your class feel free to ask in guild or come to someone else in this thread directly as I'm sure we can find someone who knows a lot about every class.

I'm a little late to the game here, but I am really excited for raiding and would like to help build the group.

I ran herald in the raid for about 8 hours during BWE3. The last pug i was in was able to get the boss to about 20% pretty consistently toward the end of our attempts. It was a very fun experience learning the mechanics and working with others to try and improve. This is one of the exact things the endgame needs.

The first pug i was in the people were adamant that the zerker meta was sufficient. After about an hour and half I think they were breaking. At that point that group hadnt even brought him to the second phase and I was consistently the only one alive because I wasnt running pure zerk gear.

The second run after someone grabbed their druid we made it to the second phase.

People were still dropping too often and we kept wasting time ressing them from the random AOE damage that was pushed around from the seekers and the boss occasionally smacking them. The group fell apart shortly after.

Later though the group I joined had a different composition. We had one druid healer and a rev healer, we had one guardian who was very tanky spec'd. the rest were a mix of reg dps and condi dps. So basically 7 mostly pure dps with 2 healers and a tank. We got further than that first pug after our first few tries once people had the mechanics down a little better.

Anyway it was a blast and I hope to be able to join you guys for raiding when the expansion drops.

I will type all this now because I'm going to be out of town this weekend and can't make the meeting.

I would like to try raiding. After playing the druid some in the Beta weekend I am thinking I'm going to play a druid as my main focus in this expansion. I've played a main healer role in most of the other MMO's I've enjoyed so I know that I like this kind of role.  I've raided in the past from way back in Everquest, EQ2, and WoW (even back in the 40 man days). My guardian would be another class I could play if we find ourselves with too many druids.

It's a little hard to say at this point not knowing what raiding is even going to be like in GW2. I can tell you I'm comfortable with playing a condition damage build with both ranger and guardian as I've been doing this with them for the last couple of months.  So I'd be fine with either a support or a damage role.

I don't have any ascended armor because I haven't been playing this game long enough to have high enough crafting levels or the kind of gold needed yet.  I do at least have full exotic on both characters.

@Braelith and anyone else that needs to get their crafting up to get ascended gear.

I just learned the other day that the old crafting booster and the new item booster which both have +50% bonus crafting experience actually stack. This means you can level a crafting discipline for half the cost.

I used it to level my weaponsmithing, artificer, and armorsmithing all to 500 to make ascended gear for raiding and saved about 80 gold worth of materials by doing so.

Could someone(s) tell me if this theory is off base?

Raids are purported to include environmental damage of some sort. I have also seen that HoT will focus on both fractals and raids. The devs indicate that ascended armor is recommended, but the forums suggest that the stat difference is minimal and the encounters likely can't be tuned that precisely.

My thought is that the later portions of the raid will include agony, increasing as a group progresses in the raid. This would mean that the ascended is needed more for AR, than it is for the raw stats.

Does this make sense, or am I combining the random?

@Cyvil  The devs had stated that the raids will not require AR. So I'd assume that to be true.

On the matter of ascended gear, I'd focus on weapons and accessories (rings, ammy, accessories). they're easier cheaper, and like said on the forums the stat difference on the armor is very very minimal.

Im just now working on my first full armor set in ascended. I made the legs and chest and ran out of gold and mats. The armor requires too many bolts of damask. 3 per inscription then another bolt or two per peice for the linings and even more if your making cloth armor. Damask is way pricier than deldrimor ingots. For reference i used all my mats and money on the armor of which only two pieces are complete, but i spent about 80 gold and was able to make two ascended swords and an ascended hammer minus one empyreal star. The cost difference is huge and for me definitely not worth it. If you were to just buy everything, the armor would be 500 gold or more easy. (thats probably way off still)

Yup I'm in the same boat Cyvil. I would do as Gideon suggests and grab at least ascended trinkets weapons. I also just started to craft my first ascended set and got a chest piece but after geting armorsmith to 500 the damask has me in a state of perma broke mat and gold wise. Tbh I'm probably going to just end up buying gems on a payday and turning them to gold to outright by the damask I need.

Crystal Reid stated on her twitter that ascended isn't required but recommended. Just means those of us in exotics have to be that much better and bring our A++ game :D

The ascended is no problem, my warrior is in a full set (sans my hoelbrak runes until I can salvage WvW armor). If AR was needed I was planning on holding off on filling the infusion slots.

If AR is not needed, I can't figure out why ascended would be needed with what, a 5% difference? I would imagine that can be overcome through both party and build composition. If everyone brings a few skills and traits that benefit others, 5% doesn't seem like much once the mechanics are known.

After this set, I am light on Damask myself (would like to fit out my necro) but I do have extra mithrilium, elder residue and cord, lacking the lower tier parts to convert. I haven't looked at the marketplace recently, but I would bet I can figure something out if anyone needs one of these materials.

My guess is that they balanced the difficulty based on the testing performance of a few groups of devs/testers play testing the content. That group likely had full ascended gear in all slots and the numbers (boss hp/damage, enrage timers, etc.) were fiddled with until it felt like the right difficulty. As such the raid is balanced around full ascended gear but as said the early encounters can likely be completed by good players in exotic gear.

Additionally the full berserker ascended vs full berserker exotic is more like a 15% difference in dps, however about 12-13% of that is weapon and jewelry/backpiece with weapons being the biggest boost due to the higher base damage and its effect on the damage equation.

I would suggest getting ascended dps versions of your 4 most likely weapon sets and the jewelry for them before considering focusing on ascended armor.

Unless of course you are planning on going Druid in which I would try and get cleric staff>cleric jewelry/backpiece>cleric ascend medium chest/pants> clerics ascended alternate weapon set > dps alternate build ascended both weapon sets > clerics ascended other armor > dps alternate build jewelry > dps alternate build additional weapons. Since the healing power stat will matter more than squeezing in extra dps for the druid healer.

From the official forums about post BWE3 Druid changes:

"Celestial Avatar Form: Skills that heal have had their base heals reduced by 15-25% and increased their healing coefficients from 100-145%. This should leave base heals solid while really rewarding players who elect to use healing power stats."

So I'm thinking it will definitely matter, especially in raids where maximizing the burst healing could be the difference between success and failure.

For anyone who is going to play a Druid healer, I would wait until the changes are implemented to the ranger class before getting ascended gear.

Arena Net has already said that it is taking another look at how astral force is generated so a staff may not be the only weapon that can be used.

If the staff is given condition damage, may want to consider Apothecary rather than Cleric.

So my wife and I are interested however there is a catch. We believe in the " the family that RAIDS together stays together" mantra. So we'd want to be in the same team and play together. We typically consider ourselves casual raiders at a high level.

I've found the idea of "casual" has changed over the years.

Casual to me is defined:

-Two to Three days a week - Confirmed
-Two to Three hour sessions - Confirmed
-Allows people to be up to 5-10 mins late - Unsure
-Allowing people to play desired specs so long as it doesn't hinder party -Unsure
-Not requiring advanced notice for absences if emergencies happen ( Real Life over Game Life) -Unsure
-Slow progression however we have boss and event progression if not weekly than by-weekly ( three weeks at most for working one event at 2-3 days each, meaning 6-9 days spent on that event) -Not enough information
-Move on without a person if they don't show up and don't cancel the raid - Confirmed

Some of those items are considered hardcore to some so I just wanted to clarify what this group is mainly wanting to do.

Some other items I was wondering about at what we are considering the spec roles. I've seen some mention be ready to bring multiple builds however what are we looking at for a pre-set round up?

So far we know there will need to be three roles: (DPS, Support, Control)
What are you wanting for:

DPS- Elementialist, Mesmer, Ranger?
Support- Druid, Guardian?
Control- DragonHunter, Warrior?

If you can't tell I'm highly analytical and like planning and charts :P I used to write how to tank guides for wow and swtor so I can't help but ask these questions in this format.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to do what is right in the face of it.

Rylssa,

In MetaBattle, look at the Dungeon section for the classes you are interested in playing.  Since raids have not been released, there are no "Raid" builds.  You could also look at the Test section for possible builds.

Another source would be the official GW2 forums. For example, in the Revenant section of the forum, Obal has posted a PvE guide.

Hey Jace! Hopefully I've made things a little clearer with where I'm aiming to go with this:

-Two to Three days a week - Confirmed <- depends on the group and how active they want to be. This event in particular is meant to be a once a week thing.
-Allows people to be up to 5-10 mins late - Unsure <- late to a degree is ok but 10 min would be the absolute max. We are dealing with players that have taken time out of their schedule. The least we can do is make sure that we aren't leaving 9 people out to dry wondering if they should cancel or pick up a reserve. It's even worse when we have 24 people showing up to raid because 4 of those people aren't going to be able to play because of the 10 man limit. It's not fair to leave them hanging. People will also have to understand if they are late they very well could be replaced with a reserve. My raid events will be posted a week in advance so if you are coming it is nice to make the effort to show up ready to go.
-Allowing people to play desired specs so long as it doesn't hinder party -Unsure <- depends on the fight. If certain things are required by the mechanics the expectation is that players will modify and change specs as required
-Not requiring advanced notice for absences if emergencies happen ( Real Life over Game Life) -Unsure <- this is only there so that we aren't waiting for someone that isn't going to show, especially if there are people around that can/want to raid. Again this is just a courtesy thing.  Obviously RL will always come first.
-Slow progression however we have boss and event progression if not weekly than by-weekly ( three weeks at most for working one event at 2-3 days each, meaning 6-9 days spent on that event) -Not enough information <- we'll take as long as we need to beat the boss and groups can move on when they feel ready. Again this is meant to be a once a week thing for Fridays. If you want to raid more it will be up to you guys to make an event or plan out and get together. I personally can't/won't go back to my 2-4 day a week raiding days because I just don't have the time nor desire for it anymore.

As for:DPS- Elementialist, Mesmer, Ranger?
Support- Druid, Guardian?
Control- DragonHunter, Warrior?

I don't think GW2 raids are going to be that simple so I can't give you an answer until we actually get teams running a raid. In the Pylons fight alone we need 3-4 pure condi, boon strip, tank, dps, movement buffs, hard/soft CC, control etc. Many classes can bring different things to the table so to straight up say all one specific class should be a specific thing is counter productive. Plus we have varying levels of raiding experience happening here so I expect to do a bit of shuffling over the first couple of weeks depending on what each team needs. The idea is to keep the same teams each week but that will depend on who is available for the event.

Pre round set up will probably be something like -> 3-4, condi, 1 tank, 1 support/control, rest dps, maybe a healer in the mix

So when I form the initial teams I am hoping to have a solid mix of classes available for each group.

Escaflownae,

One thing I can say about roles is that each group will likely want one player (doesn't and maybe shouldn't be the same player always) as the tank. We know bosses and maybe all mobs in aggro to the player with the highest toughness in the monsters aggro range. Having an specific person who has some amount of pre-decided toughness that will always be higher than any other players toughness will be the best way to control where the boss stands and is facing (to avoid other players taking cleave damage and ensure others getting behind/side credit).

As far as filling roles we discussed in the raid meeting that we will not prohibit people playing the class they want but that they must be comfortable with that classes abilities, have exotic weapons and armor and ascended jewelry for their preferred build and have a somewhat good understanding of what they can bring to the table other than just damage. Additionally players were asked to remember that this is group content, so taking group benefiting traits/skills over self only benefiting is a good idea.

One other thing is that most gw2 roles are dps + something role, this is because not all encounters will need a lot of control or potentially a lot of healing, so doing an entire build around any one element other than maximum dps as a main build is not really a great idea.

So if a boss requires aoe, or aoe control, or boon stripping people know if they are able to alter their build slightly or majorly to help the team succeed. For that reason Soren is hoping to make raid teams have a mix of classes and experience levels.

There are a handful of us that are pretty knowledgeable on most classes and at least 1 very knowledgeable person for each class that are in for raiding so if you, your wife, or anyone else interested in raiding  is unsure how to build your character, what gear to get, what other than damage you can offer the raid team feel free to ask me or someone else listed with the class your interested in on the  spreadsheet. Building knowledge and confidence is the best way to prepare for raiding, since trying to figure out the mechanics and many failures(which is mandatory for well designed raids) can be taxing.

I too am an analytical strategist

I think I have answers for all of these based on our raid meeting but Soren or any other attendee can correct me if my memory is off.

-Two to Three days a week - Currently only planning 1 day per week , though it was stated if any one wanted to start a group that raids more often or any of Soren's constructed groups decides as a whole they want to add another night that would be fine.
-Two to Three hour sessions - Confirmed
-Allows people to be up to 5-10 mins late - The plan discussed at the meeting was that everyone shows up 30 minutes before the planned entering the raid time for planning and prep. 5-10 minutes late to planning would be fine but showing up after raid entrance time your spot will likely be given away to a sub for the night.
-Allowing people to play desired specs so long as it doesn't hinder party -No one will be forced to run a specific build against their will.
-Not requiring advanced notice for absences if emergencies happen ( Real Life over Game Life) -A GSCH thing in general, though advanced notice in non emergency absences is strongly requested.
-Slow progression however we have boss and event progression if not weekly than by-weekly ( three weeks at most for working one event at 2-3 days each, meaning 6-9 days spent on that event) -I'm not sure how how this can be a thing as some bosses are harder than others and we will definitely not be kicking raiders due to lack of skill.
-Move on without a person if they don't show up and don't cancel the raid - Confirmed

Hah, the engineer power grenadier meta build is basically what I run now with a couple small differences that suit my preferences. The staff ele meta isn't too far off my build, either. I'll look at the rest and mess with armor and stuff, but I'll probably be good for a few different classes.

Hey all! I've done a preliminary team set up that hopefully gives each team a balanced roster to work with for our upcoming raids. If you all could take a look at the spreadsheet (in first post) and let me know your thoughts/feelings that would be extremely helpful :D

Karser & Gid I've tapped you both for leading a respective team so if you don't feel comfortable with that let me know asap.

We have exactly 30 people to round out teams, however HolyDemon & Yulan are maybe's (I didn't see any info from them on the sheet) so if anyone knows anyone interested in learning to raid pls let me know asap. We will juggle teams as needed on raid day to fill any gaps we have in the current roster.

MARK YOUR CLAENDER: I've put up a tentative event up on the calendar for Nov 20th 6pm PST provided raids come out with the normal patch day of Tuesday (shimi if this doesn't work for you let me know). Devs said mid month so this is just a guess on my part. :D

If you guys have any questions let me know! Or if you think we need another meeting before the 20th also let me know :)

EDIT: The event needs a snappy name so if you have any suggestions let me know!

I don't think we need a large amount of streamers for this but I have 1 gigabyte internet with a fiber backbone in my house to the fiber channel ISP circuit if anyone would like I can stream\record and someone else can commentate on it if you want very high quality.

I also have a water cooled TITAN SLI gaming computer that would be able to stream the game at high quality over twitch or whatever you want. Might be good to have a combination of record and stream for us to learn from the fights and make guides in the future.

It actually wouldn't be a terrible idea if each of the 3 teams had someone streaming/recording the event for the chance for players from the other teams to potentially learn something from each other.

Ive been testing and playing a spirit/support/healing druid since I could start.. loving it when in Avatar form plus frost spirit that's 13% dps for the group and a further 3% condtion dmg on top of that add in spotter and sun spirit and well.. you do the math as for dps I can still do very decent dps as needed hence the staff/ LB combo... ppl use sword/horn as another combo with staff.. they are fun to play :) and enjoying it.

PS Soren sent you mail.. because you didn't know what I was... well you guess it im a druid fully geared in ascended gear.. plus im a old school raider back from the WoW and Age of Conan days.

Soren,

With multiple raid teams, is the plan to have each team in a separate Gamevox channel?  In my opinion, this will make things less confusing.

I did a Tangled Depths meta this past weekend.  Initially, the entire group met in the organizing guild's main Teamspeak channel to discuss the strategies.  The group was then divided up for each lane with a single commnader on a lane.  Each commander was on a separate Teamspeak subchannel so you switched to the channel of the commander you were following.  At the end of the event, everyone switched back to the main Teamspeak channel to discuss what went right and what went wrong.

Hey all,

With Soren's assistance I've done a considerable overhaul in our spreadsheet in order to keep things simple and organized. I'd like to invite you all to do a double-check on all your personal information and desired roles included there so she can have a better time organizing the teams this Friday. I've done my best to fill it based in the previous sheet but some additional info is needed (mainly the prefered roles column).

As a bonus, now that the data is streamlined we can create nice data analysis and charts, so be sure to check the "Role Distribution Chart" tab at the bottom menu. We're aiming at something like 40% Dmg (Pow)/40% (Dmg Con)/10% Support/10% Tank, so if you're still unsure what role to fill, help us reach this meta!

Here is the link for the spreadsheet

I love the new spreadsheet, but one thing that isn't on there but should be is the need for a mix of ranged vs melee which is independent of role (since a support can still be either ranged or melee, though obviously tank must be melee).

We know at least the first boss will require at minimum 3 people that can deal damage at range (even if its their secondary weapon) so making sure we have that balance in the groups is also a good idea.

The new spreadsheet is nice with the charts, but now we can only see the details for one of our characters listed - we lost all the details people put in there for multiple characters. Don't we want that listed, too?

Rylssa look at the very last tab in the sheet -> Detail Raider info old: it should all still be there. Just haven't had a chance to finish filling in the new sheets.

As far as ranged vs melee, everyone should have at least 1 ranged weapon they are proficient with so we can adapt on the fly as needed.

Soren,

Of course everyone should have a ranged option ready, but certain classes and likely some people's main builds are designed around either melee or ranged and if that is not part of the group split up may result in more people than necessary playing with a build/weapon they are less familiar/skilled with or jsut plain would prefer not to play.

Such as group A have 8 melee and group b has 7 ranged so now, at least 2 people form group A and 1 from group B must change their build. Necro vs Reaper and Guardian vs Dragonhunter are key places where playing the elite speciailization can greatly change the range you play at but will not be immediately obvious based on the spreadsheet (which uses only the base classes) as to which they are.

We all stand a better chance of success if we can reduce the number of people having to change their gear and builds to make the team a composition fit the fights requirements. So having a good mix of preferred melee vs range seems somewhat important.

Yeah, I looked at that tab already, it didn't have all the multiple character information that people put in previously. You can still get to it in the google doc's revision history, but it doesn't exist in the current version.

It looks like the new sheet only intended for there to be one line per person, and there is no place to put information about how your toon is geared - Y/N ascended armor/weapons/etc. Maybe multiple lines for multiple toons?

I know we probably don't have to have all that information there, but it was nice to see what everyone had available to bring and their builds.

At that point I kind of think the spreadsheet is out living it's intent. We need to keep in mind that GSCH is a family friendly environment and getting to the point where we start to spreadsheet and start to min - max we thus loose the focus of that vision.

To that degree a spreadsheet logging individual item/ gear level could bring in unwarranted hostility if a "brick-wall" was reached. While that would be good for the raid leader to see to help improve the group I don't think it should be public.

We know what the baseline requirements are and while we'd like for you to get those I'd suggest to anyone that doesn't have the base level req for raids to please get with your assigned group leader prior to and after the raid if not Soren herself to discuss it. As we might be able to help elevate that problem if presented early. My concern here is that newer players would be scared out or bullied out of a spot just because of a build or current gear. However I do understand the intention for wanting it in there.

** if you need gear please use the GSCH Marketplace for any rares to be upgrade to exotic before raid, we have several people in there that create armor and accessories all the time **

Personally, I'd love to have the teams rotate on a bi-weekly basis or a monthly basis. That way we can avoid the animosity created by having a "Team A" and a "Team B". If we rotated people in an out of groups over a month it would in turn make use stronger as we get meet other people and we can learn how other people play. I still recommend we keep people that want to remain together close such as family or couples. Not use how viable this would be or if it would even been something we want to do.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to do what is right in the face of it.

Hello Raiders! I need a large favor: For those of you that have condition builds I need 7 volunteers to help fill the condition role of the first raid. If you can/are willing to play condi let me know asap.

@Rylssa I can pull the info and put it on its own tab - atm I'm trying to work with the info people have given me for their main. I do think it's a nice thing to have, more for helping others that might play the same class than anything else. I'll try to grab al the info at some point unless someone wants to take the lead and grab that info and put it in a tab called 'Build Library' or something so it can be used as a resource location.

@Gaspara - While that idea of knowing who plays ranged and who plays melee is nice to know, I think it's making more work for me and I don't think it's going to help set up initial teams. Ultimately classes/roles are going to be more important for me to consider when forming basic teams. Players are just going to have to adapt and that will be up to the individual team leads to discuss amongst each other. I mean there's really only so much I can do before this turns into spreadsheet wars: min/maxing 101 and that is not my intent behind this raid event. Yes we all want success and yes we want to eventually be as efficient as possible but I don't want to risk scaring people away because we're getting to picky with what info we are asking for. If people want to do this however then we can role with it.

@Escaflowne - Team swapping has potential and I think will largely happen naturally as people sign up for future events but we can definitely arrange something perhaps once a month so we get to know our fellow team mates. I definitely don't want this turning into 'all the good raiders are in Team A & all the bad ones are in Team B'. Again that's not my intent with this event. The goal here is to create a low pressure raid event where people can feel comfortable learning and excelling in a fast paced environment while still having fun.

Escaflownae,

This content is not designed for everyone so unfortunately we cannot force it to be so. While we will not exclude people for skill reasons (since those can't be directly helped and no one with the confidence in their abilities to try raiding is below the threshold to be detrimental whether or not they fully believe it themselves) we are forced to use gear walls to have an hope of succeeding.

Raids are a place where people need to understand that sometimes you must be willing to accept constructive criticism and try and learn to get better at the encounters (this goes for everyone from raid leader to first time raider and min/max dps champ to "I just press 1") to help everyone succeed.

Gear brick walls are a result of ANet designing the contents difficulty around all players in the group being semi-skilled, organized, on voice comms and having full ascended. While ascended armor provides minimal difference weapons add a lot of damage and ascended jewelry are not overly expensive and have a fairly noticeable effect.

There is only so much other players can do to make up for an under geared player (even a skilled one) so in order to have an opportunity to succeed a line must be drawn somewhere.

As far as the rotating players, I like the idea in theory but am concerned that these encounters will be highly focused on communication and synergy that rotating people around will set everyones chances of success back. If this was a standard raid where we could get raid gear by beating bosses to make the earlier encounters easier then swapping around would be fine but if all groups complete the first boss and then the next week teams rotate and all groups struggle with the boss they all defeated the week before people can get frustrated. Conversely if a specific group does seem to be finding success that others aren't we should try and figure out why and make changes as needed to try and make all groups successful even if that means the one group is set back some.

I hope none of this came off as accusatory, aggravated, or condescension(or negative at all) as it wasn't meant to be and I never can quite tell how my typed words will be read by others. I want as many people to get a chance to raid as want but still want to give everyone a chance at success. That is why I have continually offered (both in this thread and on voice comms during the raid meetings) to help people come up with builds, show them how to get gear for their builds, or give them pointers on how to get better and if I can't help then I find someone else in GSCH who can (since I don't claim to be  an expert at every class).

Not at all Gaspara. Talking and conversation is the best way to make sure we are successful and I encourage good convo and debate :)

I do agree that while raids are available to everyone they are not necessarily for everyone. At the very first raid meeting we established we want to be a mid tear raid group and we did expect people to have the min gear required (exotic with ascend trinkets). Also, and if I was never clear on this please let me know - we are aiming to succeed and that means taking honest criticism and critiques, being willing to try something new, and be flexible in build and role. That's just how raiding works and in order to succeed in our raids all our players have to understand this.

Gaspara thanks for replying to me.

I hear your POV and I'm glad you differ from my opinion it makes for good conversation. My only concern during this is while I feel l we have good intentions to start out it can quickly escalate into something that turns people away. While I agree that raids are not for everyone we as GSCH family need to try super hard to not throw up invisible walls before the new member can get in.

These walls can be created by having clique formed by being in one group and having a massive success over another. This makes it frustrating for the other groups. Also, new members will be grouped into other groups that are a.) having problems, b.) losing members, or c.) full of lower experience players.

Just trying to bring in a healthy conversation about this so please don't get offended by the thoughts.

Archy, The 7 condi is because we will be having at least 3 raid groups going and each group needs 2-3 condi.

Escafownae,

To be honest I'm really not sure how best to go about raiding 10 man raids with this many people and the likelihood of a continuous stream of more newer players wanting to join. At some point some people will have to give up rewards and progress to help others learn to succeed, I'm just not sure how we balance that with the thought that having nearly completed a boss and being told half the team is being split up to help others can also be incredibly frustrating and cause animosity.

Since most bosses I expect to take more than a month to defeat at a rate of 2-3 hours worth of attempts a week, I'm not sure how to balance that fact that changing things up more than switching 1 or 2 players can easily set a raid team back 2+ weeks of attempts.

What might be best (and I may try and step up on this and find  time I can lead an event) is if we can get people leading raiding events multiple times per week, that way more and more people can get included, we can have more mixed groups as different raid events can have different teams (especially since different players will be able to attend them) and more people can learn boss mechanics more quickly leading to more success across all GSCH raids.

Yah Cyvil & Archy if you could bring your condi specs that would be epic!

Archy reason I need 7 is because I currently only have 4 that are running condi and we need 3-4 condi per team for the red guy

@Gaspara/Escaflowne - I think for the time being I'm going to try and keep teams 1-3 together until we are actively and consistently winning and people are feeling comfortable with the content. Raids are hard enough that we don't want any added stress/frustration. If any new guys come that they are just going to have to accept that they will be part of new teams that form later -> ex) people that haven't hit raid meetings, don't have info on the spread sheet etc, sign up last minute. I don't think it's realistic to try and fit them in a team that's been working together for X amount of time. That's just going to end bad. However if we wanted to have a 1 a month mixer for those 3 teams if they are up for it then ya that would be cool.

My preferred method though, if we were going to do a mixer, is that we'd probably want something like a general guild raid night that someone wants to helm (I can't do it), where anyone of any skill level could come. This would give us the most flexibility. The problem with just getting anyone together without some sort of sign up is that people will be left out due to the 10 player limit.... which sucks

So in order to illustrate what I was intending I've placed a "team assignment" on the google docs. This was generated using a random number generator and a slot selection list. I only added those that currently had choosen a role and this can be changed and augmented at anytime. Plus it someone wants to and in automation forumlas to the fields from the random team number field to the name field that would save some time in the future otherwise I can do that later.

Escaflownae, I think random is actually a not good idea. There are so many factors that need to be considered when constructing a good raid team that using RNG to decide teams is most likely to result in one of many very negative results (skill/experience stacked on one team, poor class distribution, poor distribution of secondary roles in case of someone who can't attend).

If all groups are to have a chance to succeed Soren is going to have to find a way to perfectly balance, skill, experience, classes, gear, roles, backup roles, leadership, and attendance consistency. It won't be easy and after a few weeks she may need to decide if teams need to be reassessed because people dropped out, one group good too much of something and is clearly superior and is blowing by the other groups, personality conflicts arise that cause drama (hopefully not an issue here but I have seen it as an issue in past situations and raids coordination requirements frustration can bring it out).

Most of the some of the top hardcore PvE guilds have now beaten the second boss and stated that it is absolutely a nightmare of difficulty and coordination. The few that have had already put in between 12 and 20 hours of attempts into the content. to put that into perspective that is 1-3 months of this event and all the players in those guilds have previous raid experience and experience taking on the hardest challenge GW2 had to offer before this, so they are likely to progress at a faster rate than ourselves. So major roster changes on a regular basis or starting out with an unbalanced rosters could literally set us back months. We can handle this challenge but trying to constantly switch up groups will lead to people having to learn many different jobs in the encounters which definitely slows progression.

Archy,

Yeah, I'm actually east coast US so you and I have an even smaller window than the west coasters. Also my sports schedule changes pretty much every month which is why I haven't really lead events before because my free times often overlap with current events. Now until April is my best time for it though so I may be looking at the calendar(s) to determine if there is a time I can commit to.

Back in the bentmer days we trained up a single team of raiders so that they knew the raid function then split that group to teach others how to complete greenscale. Might not ve a bad idea to take the most successful group and divide them up amoung the other groups to help teach the situation.

Fact is. You cant just all pile in the bus and hope youll have the tools you need when you arrive. Raiding isnt just a normal throw everything you got at a boss. You have to do certain things at certain times and you have to be willing to change your build on the fly. For example theres one boss in this first raid that only takes condi damage. If you went in without any condi players your toast. Another throws green circles on the ground and 4 people need to be in the circle each time or the raid wipes. Another requires knockbacks. So right there you need to have a healthy amount of cc, ranged units able to attack while across the area standjng in green circles and have sone serious condi damage while keeping your main tank alive. Your not going to be able to randomly pull a successful group. Thats why raids were not added to the party finder.

No worries just trying to help sort it out before we get to jump into it. I guess I misunderstood this as a casual group. I kept thinking that it's only one day a week so it's obviously got to be a casual attempt without any hardcore elements in play. Lets just do our best to not alienate the rest of the other teams and the guildies that become interested in it later. It's super easy for that that happen.

First off to Soren, I ended up changing my Guardian's build from AH to Dragonhunter DPS. He's got a good mix of power burst/some CC plus ranged and melee attacks. Good mobility so I can volunteer to be a green circle hamster if needed. I've also got a fully kitted out Tempest and almost fully kitted Engi. Could go warhorn support build on the Tempest if needed.

Secondly, I highly recommend that everyone take a few minutes when possible to watch this kill video Dulfy posted just so you can get an idea of what to expect in the Vale Guardian fight (Druid POV) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLGWMyJZj5g

Edit: Just saw your post about leaders. Yeah, I don't mind leading a team. See you guys tonight!

Well, if they've changed things so that Confusion and Torment are just as effective on NPCs as they are on Players, then IMHO, then my little Mesmer would be my "go to gal".  She just has way much more Condi DPS potential than the Necro.

We'll figure it out, I'm just worried about how Confusion used to work in PvE, as it was a very ineffective damage-type.

@Soren:  I patched up the sheet, so you'll have one open spot for R4 team.

Sekk if you can run pure condi that would help a lot. We just had 2 more drop so if anyone know 2 people that want to raid please have them sign up. Sekk how familiar are you with raids? T4 will need a raid lead and I had to move Gid up to T2...

I looked over what is needed role wise and adjusted to that. I can bring my Reaper Necro as Power Dps and for CC's. I can also bring a Power Herald Revenant for Dps. Or I can bring my Trapper Ranger for Condi Dps.

I am good to bring any of these depending on what we need.

Soren,

I am going to be statused as "if needed" for this week. I will be at my in laws and while nothing will be happening at that time and I can attend I will only have my laptop with me whose single digit fps at times(25fps tops) on minimum settings is a far cry from the static 100 fps on max settings of my desktop.

So I will be there and ready to go if I am needed but would prefer to have a sub replace me for the good of the team and my sanity.

Coolio, Thank you for the heads-up Gaspara :)

@Jay, I think any of those would be fine for the power role, so I'll leave that up to you and your team to figure out ^^. Rev's are nice for the break bars but power Reaper is a beast too lol

Big holiday week, so I'd be "iffy" at best, so I'm just gonna call it now and say that I'm not going to be available.  I removed my name from the Raid Team page, but not sure what an "active roster" is.

I just had to have emergency surgery to remove my appendix. At this moment I wouldn't feel up to leading a Raid, but I'm hoping by Friday I will feel better and should have no problem. If anything changes I will update my status.

Bonus is, sitting in my computer chair is one of the only comfortable positions at the moment and we aren't going anywhere for the holiday especially now.

Thanks to those who already sent me well wishes after hearing about my surgery.

Now the wife and I have to figure out how were going to pay for it, but that's a worry for another day. For now I'm glad that I didn't die and glad that we had some good doctors and nurses who all did a good job.

Hope to see you guys on Friday. Have a good thanksgiving holiday.

I'll be at my Aunt's this weekend hanging with the family and not sure if I'm going to be able to make it, just depends on what's going on. I'll remove myself from the roster and just see if there are any last minute spots if I can actually attend.

Hey everyone, quick update, so not only did I lose my appendix recently I also just lost my job. It's been a really rough couple weeks. I should be able to make the raid tomorrow, unless some kind of job opportunity presents itself that somehow happens to be late on a Friday evening (which I doubt).

I'm currently spending my days job hunting. So if anyone has any connections for some one with a web and graphic design and CAD drafting back ground I would greatly appreciate it.

See you guys tomorrow night.

Oh, man, that is a total bummer, Gideon. I hope you feel better very soon and find a job that's even better than the one you had.

I had to cancel my availability for this week. Hubby informed me that I am attending a work-related (for hubby) Christmas party. I find them rather tedious affairs, but the schmoozing could be helpful for him, so I go.

Awe man Gid that is horrible. Here's hoping things look up for you.

As for a CAD drafting position (I'm a structural design engineer) check out the company I work for -> http://www.wspgroup.com/. Not sure what area you currently live in but over the past month or so they've been hiring CAD Techs like mad, especially for mech and elec work. Might be worth checking into.

Hey all. I was a very late sub in one of last week's teams and enjoyed my first taste of raiding. I can't commit to the 6 pm start so I won't formally sign up, but I usually get online around 7 pm (10pm ET for me) so if anyone drops out I'm available from the bench. I put my details in the google doc.

I will be most comfortable playing a DPS Ranger using a Spirit build which I have been testing this week. I'm still getting used to Druid but need more play time with it. I also play Guardian quite a bit so that would be my second choice. I have full Exo armor with ascended Trinkets on both toons and an ascended Longbow.

My tank build you listed is a week old :p  I'm running with this one now that I spoke about in the other thread. Less toughness as people remove toughness from their gear, and more auras and group protection.

I'll put something together on the spreadsheet today.... unless this gorgeous sunshine hangs around :p
