Ok so i've played 1 NB to v1 and am currently leveling another one because I wanted a different race.  My question is about gearing.

Everything I have read would indicate that I want to wear leather but glyph for magicka.  The reason for this being that supposedly the NB skill damage scales with Magicka but the melee range abilities crit off of weapon crit.

I plan to test this out later today, but if anybody could offer some insight on this.  I would be most appreciative.

Most of the NB attacks (especially in the assassination line) scale off of weapon crit. But the damage is based on Magicka. The Siphon line I don't think scales of Weapon crit, it's spell crit iirc. NB kinda are in the same boat as Templar healers. Their class line heals scale off magicka and spell crit, but the resto heals scale off weapon damage and spell crit.

The basic rule to follow is if it uses magicka but is a melee ability then it scales from Magicka and  weapon crit. If the ability is a ranged ability and uses magicka then it scales from Magicka and spell crit. If the ability is from the Resto or Destro staff then the damage scales from weapon damage and spell crit. If the weapon uses stamina then is scales from Stamina and weapon crit.

Wow... thanks for the info Aunvyrae!

For my PvP NB archer with dual wield I used Breton for the magicka and leather for the stamina passives. And I'm putting attribute points in all three equally at the moment. Picking abilities is difficult with everyone advising something different so I just make personal adjustments and try to lean towards the siphoning tree of abilities for survivability.

But after all the talk about broken abilities and over powered DK's I am seriously thinking about switching my PvP character to my PvE DK main who uses two destruction staffs and wears all light. I might change to one destruction and one restoration staff as it would be useful to heal folks.

I also have a Sorcerer alt with two Destruction staffs. Maybe he'll come out to join the war now that he's old enough to sign up.

But, I really wanted an archer from before the game went live so.........

NB's are still viable in PVP, it's just if they get into large battles (see this a lot with PVE) some of their abilities will stop working (like fighting a boss with adds my Surprise Attack would stop working, as in not even activate). So in small scale the NB is fine 1 v 1 1v 2 sort of stuff. In large scale stuff you run the risk of abilities just becoming unresponsive or passives breaking on death forcing you to logout then back in. Now, with all that said it doesn't always happen. Some times it will work as intended. In away playing a NB is like playing Russian Roulette. You never know when you are going to die because a skill or passives breaks.

Tough call, I face the same dilemmas.

Without ZOS giving any clear idea of when they plan to balance all of this stuff (other than slowly, over the next several months...) I guess we just have to suck it up and go with the meta builds of Light+Staff, then pay the gold for respecs when they finally bring builds built around other armor and weapon choices into balance.  Right now, its like choosing to play WvW in Guild Wars 2, in all Masterwork greens at level 80, rather than using Ascended quality gear.

Fortunately, it does seem that Nightblade is more forgiving than DK/Sorc, with regards to having a bit more options for a decent build.

yep if you look at that post i made couple threads down  the bow/dw, bow/2h that nb does very well in AVA  solo  vs 1v1 and 1v3 even at  v5  killing  v 10 dk and sorcs etc .

she is using heavy stam build as well with points split between health and stam .

since almost all the dk ablities are melee range they would scale off weap crit and magic  so it would be better to wear 5 medium and 2 light , with 3 stam gylphs, 4 magik glyphs  and eat mag./stam food

and maybe use  armor/spell pent  stone ?    if using mostly class ablities  ?

Thief would be better. it depends on what weapons you plan on running. I have two NB builds that work quite well. One uses all magicka, the other is a 75/25 Stamina/Magicka split. Both use the Thief stone. with Infused on the head/chest/legs and every thing else with Divines. Both use a Bow/DW set up with Powered traits and fire enchants.
