Ringworld by Larry Niven. The book is the basis for the game Halo, not in the sense of master seargent but in terms on the "halo". Awesome book. There are4 parts to the sries i believe But book 1 is a complete book in itself.
I re-read this one every year, it's that good: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein
