Rift and Storm Legion Opinions

So I thought GW2 was going to be the game for me for a long time, but turns out, its not. I am considering resubscribing to Rift and getting Storm Legion, but I was wondering what everyone's opinion of it was before I did. So what do you guys think about them?

I think I was in the same boat as you were. I wanted to love GW2 but for reasons that escape me, it just never clicked. I leveled an Elementalist to cap, and lost interest around Orr. So over Christmas I decided to give RIFT another go, I played the free Storm Legion weekend event and was hooked. I ended up buying the expansion and re-subbed. Now my experiences are limited, as I've only played Storm Legion for a few days now, but its been a lot of fun. The new souls seem interesting, and the new zones are massive, beautiful, and full of things to do. So for me personally, I'm having a great time and I'm glad I came back.

Having a ball with SL. Cannot for the life of me figure out why my under-geared toons can all kill things so easily in Brevane thus far :P Especially since I have a dicey time of it in EI. Go figure lol.

For me, now I am torn. I really like what guild wars 2 has to offer with the combat (I find myself trying to dodgeroll out of aoe's in rift and it doesn't work so well lol), and WvWvW being stronger in that game. Events are fun and like you I got tires of it, but since coming to this guild I have learned a love for guild wars 2 again. I also love rift, which makes things difficult. Because I love rift for completely different reasons. I love to raid and do structured things like dungeons, etc with a lot of people. The rifts are very fun( they have hunt rifts now like a gauntlet kinda, with ranks and prizes) and zone events can be a blast. Oh and dimensions(although my suggestion, get to levelling before you go into them as they will suck your hours of life away)! I have had the chance to taste the RP life in rift and I love it. I really like both games for very different reasons. My two cents is this, play rift for a while and give it a shot if you are bored with guild wars 2. You can always go back and play. And if you are worried that you would waste money on an xpac, don't be Storm legion is amazing, and the guild is very active, always groups going and people having a blast! Their new ways of questing make it not as mundane and story quests are actually a blast. I found myself wanting to read quest text and that is something no game has accomplished in my book. We also got a new soul for each of the classes that are pretty neat. Both games are good, wish I had 48 hours in a day:(

I'll give credence to both games.....but also.... different games, different dynamics, so it can be a toss up. Having said that, my interest was once again picked with the release of SL in Rift and am enjoying it very much. I do enjoy GW2, but in a subdued and subtle way. GW2 is a great game, but to me, the dynamics and mechanics of the game seem out of kilter in an odd sort of way. That could just be my old age though....lol....just my 2cp worth

Okay I appreciate all the help, I got a few specific questions though. 1. How has raiding changed with the level cap raise? 2. How have dungeons changed with the level cap raise? 3. Has there been any changes to PvP, last I played they had put in Conquest and I grinded to get that trinket and never wanted to play again.

Pvp in rift is a sore spot if you played pre storm legion. The top teir gear is now worthless and a new set of 3 added in. Pretty much if you grinded all that gear out, with storm legion 50000 favor would buy the entire set with no requirements. Now theres a whole new set to grind. This was a hard hit for me but the bigger hit is that you cant conquest anymore until 60. They threw a huge pve grind in front of being able to do that which I love. These two factors have pretty much killed any desire I had to pvp in rift. Pve wise theres lots to do but its very slow leveling fro 50 to 60.

1. How has raiding changed with the level cap raise? I cant really answer this one, because Ive only been in the 10 man post 60. There is a noticable difference to the difficulty of the encounters, but like everything raid related, it all becomes "2nd nature" after a time. The road to being raid ready is the same as it has always been; you have to have the gear/stats to do them. 2. How have dungeons changed with the level cap raise? This I could answer at length. The new dungoens are no joke in normal mode, and even more difficult in expert mode. Not that they cannot be done; just much harder than pre SL experts. They made the encounters more raid-like as far as mechanics, and most are very unfriendly to melee classes (no suprise here, this is in fact Rift we are talking about). In my experience, and Im pretty certain I can speak for most of those who went before me into the experts here, they are hard. Gone are the days of sitting back, spamming a button, stepping sideways, and hittin more attacks while you wait for a cleanse (if needed). If you cant bring 5k+ dps to the table, you are holding your group up, and that is being generous. If you cant respond (quickly) to mechanics, you are holding your group up because you are dead and not doing dps. However, as I said above, after some time they become 2nd nature. Do youself and your groupmates a favor and bring your "A" game, know your rotations, know your spec, and know ahead of time that you could be in there awhile :) As a side note, I heard there is a lot of complaining on the forums, that the new dungeons are to hard/complex/unforgiving etc. I really hope they do not change them, nerf them, dumb them down etc beacuse they ARE a challenge (for now) and its rewarding again to complete them. Get attached to some of the people doing them, and who have the mechanics figured out and youll be happy you did. Welcome back Schaab, see you in the expert que :)

Ya I agree about the dungeons...feels more like a "mini-raid" than a dungeon. Good stuff. Now the bigger question is...how do I get my honey to come over from WoW and play Rift? I bought it for him, and he's played a little, but I catch him playing WoW late at night while I'm sleeping LOL. He says he likes Rift but he likes WoW more. :-( Stupid pandas.

I'd resubbed a year with SL, but still have yet to log back in and play. o.O Well, I've logged in and poked around, but have not played it seriously. Why? Not really sure which toon I want to level to 60; I can't remember how to play the classes or what builds to use for leveling, especially since they reset all my points; I don't know how to get invites to Gaiscioch, but most importantly, I am not sure what to do with my two guild banks full of junk, that I don't remember why I was hoarding them to begin with.

A little late to the party here but, welcome back soonish then Schaab :P I recall running a couple of dungeons with you and some others in gw2, and I'll be honest and say SL is possibly better than vanilla rift, which some minor pains >_> like carnages, those are love or hate really.

I too saw this post late, but a couple comments for others that may be interested in coming back. I pvp'd a lot in 2011 and was Rank 8. After playing WoW thru a couple exansions I wasn't surprised about the old pvp gear being replaced too much (even after all the hours spent, lol). While I agree PvP could be improved in many areas, there are a couple things that are good. I was away for almost a year so, I'm not sure how long this has been in the game but I really like the PvE item rewards from the PvP dailies. Since you automatically get valor in WFs anyways these items help those that level mostly through PvP outside of WFs. I had a couple low level characters that I wanted to try out in SL. PvP was a super easy way to gear up quickly to do quests in SL when that toon didn't have good PvE gear from raiding at 50. And it seems like you get more XP from WFs now. Conquests aren't the best for sure but, man, the kill count weekly really generates from favor/prestige...both with the quest reward and in CQ :) Overall, I'd say SL is rather super Alt-friendly. I only had one 50 pre-SL and just never had too much of a desire to get another toon to 50. I had 3 toons around lvl 30. Now, I have 2 60's and one lvl 55. It's so much easier to get alts into the new content and enjoy the game differently. My Cleric is the lvl 55 and I've gotten there by not even finishing the first zone in SL. That's 60% crafting turn-ins, 30% pvp and probably 10% Cape Jule. I don't think getting to 60 is too much of a chore. There are many ways to get there and fun imo

Just my 2 cents...I tried Rift after a long break during the big patch (1.11?) right before SL and did NOT care for it at all. All of my roles had been reset, my favorite specs were no longer viable, I just did not know where to begin. But after some trial and error, I love the SL expansion. Several of the roles have been improved and I am really enjoying the game. I upgraded my dimension today and will probably be lost in that for quite some time :)

Hello folks. I'm brand new to the family (just joined today) and seeing the presence of the guild in Rift, thought I would go ahead and give it a go via Rift Lite. To join the guild (in-game), does it matter what Origin I choose? Pretty interested to see what this game is all about. I really haven't followed it much at all. Played a bit of GW2 during Beta until shortly after launch (just came back), and have played WoW as well.

Mae wrote: "All of my roles had been reset, my favorite specs were no longer viable, I just did not know where to begin." That is exactly why I haven't put any time back into RIFT, even though I bought a year's sub for it. I have to wonder if Trion understands how ... irritating and daunting it is for former players to come back and have to not just re-learn their characters, but figure out how to rebuild all of its Roles. I forgot how often they do reset them, and it was annoying when I was playing and knew what I was doing, but beyond frustrating coming back and trying to figure out what is what. Sadly, in RIFT, you can gimp a build.

the best thing you could do for a build if you have no idea where to start, is to press N and go to your souls. There you will find the option to choose preset builds you can start with that work because they were tested by devs and players alike. You may have to adjust depending on your play style but I suggest trying them and reading the short descriptions of how to use them on the same page. You choose your build, it takes you to your soul page and you can fill it up all at once by clicking spend all. It will give you the option of setting your hot bars and set the skills on there for you. I was very overwhelmed when they reset my souls and was a bit frustrated as well because I loved icar builds ( a cleric thing), but it is pretty easy to adjust if you go with presets and then worry about other builds when you get to 60 or want to do dungeons/raids. There are a lot of different ways to level now too, not just questing and I found the easiest way was to balance IA's with carnage and onslaughts. I also hopped continents a lot to do story lines for rep as I was leveling. Also it doesn't matter what faction you play anymore really we all are part of the same guild and can raid, do dungeons, pvp and all that together now:) One thing to note though, do not flag for pvp if you are in a mixed faction group in open world you will be booted from raid automatically by the game. There is also cross shard pretty much everything now, so you can raid and do a lot of things with members from other shards as well as faction:) hope this helps clearing up some questions that were here and in guild chat.
