Rogue vs mage gameplay question

My main is a rogue who I have played almost exclusively since Rift was released. I never levelled up an alt to 50 because I did not want to grind PAs. Now that PAs are shared, I have considered levelling up a mage to 50 and switching over to that calling for Storm Legion.

The main thing that matters to me with MMO gameplay is how combat gameplay rewards skilled players. I do not really like how the macro system in Rift prior to 1.11 made DPSing so simple where you could get by with just pressing a couple of buttons over and over. I like the idea of having to master rotations, monitor your cooldowns, and utilize reactive abilities quickly or you miss out.

I'm not concerned with which calling does more DPS. Between the two callings, which one is the most challenging, which to me means more fun to play, in terms of the criteria I listed above?

Thanks

that's somewhat a hard question to answer since SL will change things up a bit again. My understanding is that mages were made less complicated in some ways in 1.11 but I have not played my mage yet. before 1.11, mages were more complicated. now, I think they probably still are since they streamlined rogues to be a bit simplier as well. Doesn't hurt to get a mage up, then see what you like better :) part of why I'm trying to finish getting my cleric to 50 (he's 46, was 38 last week) before SL, then will have a 50 of every class, so if I get bored of one, I switch to the other and have more fun :)

I'm a bit of the opposite; I play my mage almost exclusively. My rogue is 35 and has been for quite some time. The DPS macro rotations for my mage have gotten a little more complicated but overall it's an improvement. There's more for me to pay attention to (which isn't always the best for me but hey, I have ADOS). I have enjoyed finally putting use to skills like Heat Wave which had been present but never utilized in my previous builds. I haven't even respeced my rogue to compare them though.

As someone who raids on both classes... It really depends on your spec and the fight. Mages tend to turret; rogues are mostly mobile. If you're into dot management, then Mage (or sabo) may be the one for you. If you're not, we'll, keep playing around with the specs.
