Keep seige: attack the gate with player skills or...?

(Thank Denji for pointing out the Team Legacy guides, they're good!)

So we're sieging a keep, and two or three people are operating rams.  There are so many of us at the gate that guards are dying in about a second when they respawn.  Should you attack the gate with your skills, or...?

From the Team Legacy guide:

"In the first beta weekend, a flame ram would deal between 8000 and 9000 damage per hit on a 5s cooldown, or between 1600 and 1800 dps.  In terms of the numbers of melee attackers this accounts for, this means that for every flame ram on a door, you'd need ten players to equal the damage output.  Wording another way, for every (10 * <number of rams>) players who stop bashing the gate, ram(s) will have to run for 5 more seconds.  Typical keep assaults will have 2-4 rams running, means you can move 40-80 players away from the gate and it only costs about 10 seconds of ram time. "

The guide advises blocking reinforcements by intercepting defenders quite far away from the gate.  It reminds me of my postern defense days in WAR.  Good read:  http://teamlegacy.net/_/gw2/melee-in-keep-assaults-reinforcement-prevention-r526

Excellent article. We can look forward to having preset designs and designations for choke point groups. I know we've had people in the beta forever. Has anyone started strategizing this yet?

These keep doors are much wider than warhammers. Not sure if our old Warhammer methods will work so well this time around. The Pandora's box method might work tho, but I doubt a strait tank wall will. Also AoE seems to go through the door, so its kinda hard to get ready behind it. Not sure if this will be changed or not.

The key to holding the doors now is lots and lots of ballistae. Normal aoe in GW2 can only target 5 people at a time, I believe, while the ballista pierces, which can damage an unlimited amount of players, because its hitting them one after another rather than just 5 at once. This is absolutely zergshredding. Throwing in a couple cannons for the aoe slow bleeds and extra damage would be good too. Tank wall is no more, though I think a few guardings could hold a gate an annoyingly long time. I think this can be overcome with stability, however. Now we do ballista wall!

A ballista wall should prove devastating, but it will need all the support it can get. Under normal circumstances, ballistae will likely get off only 2 shots at most before attackers are swarming over top of them once the gate comes down. Ideally, you'll be wanting to throw everything you possibly can at that open doorway that might slow the attackers down (AoE stuns/cripples/chills/etc) to buy your ballistae wall every single precious extra additional shot you can manage.

Ballista skill #1 and skill #3 are both single target, I believe. To me the best zerg shredder on the Ballista is #2, the AoE bleed. It hits a lot of folks, and (unlike #1) there's an easy way to thwart enemies who dodge skillfully: target a ranger pet running with the pack of players. It can even be a non-rezzed one. #2... Boom! Everyone in the vicinity takes direct damage, and then bleeds. I get piles of sparkly bags at my feet every time I do this. :) Don't underestimate Catapult for gate defense. While the gate is still up you can toss the big rock ammo against the inside of your gate and it will damage people and siege equipment on the outside. Reload with the small shot to do very nice anti-personnel damage. Unlike Ballista the Catapult's firing arc has a little loft and can be set back from the edge of the wall, out of line of sight.

Even properly placed arrow carts with AoE defense can break up a group. It's a matter of using all the tools in as creative useful ways as possible. I'm not the one to know this, but seen it in action and heard about it as well. I love WvW but have had a hard time in the past couple betas being able to do anything without interruption or my hands were not cooperating. Talking to the hand don't work! Ha Ha! Anyway, when I do get in WvW it will be with Briseadh, who will be my Norn Guardian. I rather have fun doing support and defense of siege weapons against the enemy. Though I did make sure I knew how to run siege, so I can do that though we have plenty of eager beavers who love running siege.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Ballistae are single target... But the projectile will continue through the target and hit people behind them.
