Declining health dictates I stop GW2 for near-term

I know I haven't been high profile in the game/guild since I joined last fall, so most of you don't know me (Forlorne Hope/Phallse Hope). I love playing GW2 and was intending on getting much more active in the guild, but "the best laid plans....".  Turns out all the time I spend sitting at my PC and/or laptop has damaged already fragile lumbar nerve roots and I'm a few steps away (no pun) from losing the use of my legs again. So. I'm going to go against my better judgment and actually follow the docs advice this once and give those aggravating activities a rest for what's left of 2015. There was still lots I wanted to do in-game.... my toons were becoming somewhat competitive, and I had my ascended and almost had my first legendary. I was getting ready to jump in with both feet, as it were. I'd also had a false start in joining the magazine, and was hoping to give that another run. I am researching gear that can be used comfortably while lying down.... devices that replace the keyboard, and just link to the TV in the bedroom and keep playing. Unfortunately, it apparently has a steep learning curve and you've got to reset muscle memory to use it effectively, and for what it costs, I'm not sure going that route at this stage is smart. I've found games to use on my tablet (Clash of Clans, Hearthstone). I'd like to stay plugged in to the guild and maybe find ways to become more involved. Guess we will see what the future brings.  There is really no point in me taking a spot someone else can use so I'll quit the guild in that respect.

Hey Phil,

Thanks for letting us know what is going on. I'm sorry that your body refuses to cooperate with you and although you seem hesitant to follow doctor instructions, I am hoping that their recommendations end up helping you feel better!

Not knowing your set up, it is difficult for me to make relevant suggestions, but if possible, you could always plug your computer to your tv, and use a remote keyboard and mouse. I have done it plenty of time before and it would allow you to continue playing the game you love.

There is also computer trays that could come in handy for you. You know, the kind that you can put a monitor on?  This would allow you to have you computer beside your bed and just roll the screen in front of you when you use it.

Either way, again, I truly hope things get better for you. Gotta keep those legs of yours going;) and that back feeling better!

If possible, let us know how things are going :).

You are always welcome to help out with the magazine or hop on Gamevox to hang out as well:).

Hang in there bud!

Yeah, health comes first man. I can't say I know exactly what you're going through but I also have nerve damage/disc damage in my lower back from an accident which happened while working. It still prevents me from working a full 42hr week and as much as I love my gaming rig, sometimes after working 8hrs the only way I can play is from a gaming laptop in a recliner. So yeah I quite literally feel your pain, more often than not I let it get me frustrated and just fight thru it, working out etc. which is when the really fun part happens an I end up with partial loss of feeling in my hands and feet, pins, needles and lots of stabbing/shooting pain (which is sometimes so bad it ruins my appetite and I don't eat). But yeah If playing gw2 is messing with your health do what you need to, everyone here understands and we'll be here if or when you decide to return.

One of the wonderful things about Gaiscioch is that you can participate in whatever means fits your needs.  Do what you need to do to take care of yourself, and we will be here when you feel up to playing or chatting.

You are always family even if you wind up not gaming for days, months or even years.  Just come around here now and then so we know how you are doing.  =)

I know what it is like to have health issues and I know I have to mix up moving with sitting or my MS gets worse.  Even so gaming is one of the things I can do the longest before the hands and arms get upset.  I can do that longer than reading a book these days, since I'm still one of those that loves reading paperbooks and gripping things can be a chore some days.

So definitely do the proper exercises that keep the muscles strong so they can help out the weaker parts in the body.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

Glad you are making good choices for your health, don't mess with a bad back....

The family and the games will be here when you are able to return to us. No need to quit the guild, they will rotate you out if the spot is needed and who knows, the learning curve might not be a steep as expected.

Let us know how you are doing.

Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.

Thank you all for the encouragement. Just returned from an extended hospital stay and extensive testing. Prognosis is.....more testing. I have too much metal in my back for the mri to show anything conclusive. Spending lots of time in the pool, both therapy pool, and now that I'm back home, swimming pool. Staying away from my computer and gw2 is much harder than I first imagined it would be. But I'm getting overly friendly with my tablet, and that helps me stay on the straight and narrow. Just wondering if anyone in the guild plays Hearthstone? With its Wow affiliation, not sure if it's taboo. ?  I'm catching up on tavern posts, VA hospitals are only recently providing wifi, and it can take forever to log on and get anything loaded. It's nice returning from the dark ages to modern conveniences. If I can be of any assistance with the mag, in spite of my limitations, pls let me know. And haven't written anything beyond poetry and lyrics in forever, but I'm a pretty good proofer and editor. Fingers crossed that maybe by late winter or early spring I'll be back online.
