Need some advice about the possibility a GW2 account.

So with the possibility of ESO no longer being a chapter I've been toying with the idea of making a GW2 account. I still plan on playing ESO no matter what happens, but family events are great. So I guess what I'm asking is, if I buy GW2 would it be worth it considering it's been out as long as it has. Would just be in the noob yards forever while the fun is somewhere else... Hmmm. Any advice, comments, or just laughing at me is welcome.

We love GW2 noobs :) The great thing is in WvW none of that matters everyone is bolstered to 80 and you can level up in WvW entirely. Additionally we usually have at least 1 zone clear event going per week to help people level and get map completion.

And on top of that, some people have a lower level alt they're trying to level up, so you have the possibility of leveling buddies. My engi is only level 30 :P

If the guild leaves ESO, I probably will, too.  I have nothing left to accomplish but group stuff in Craglorn and Cyrodiil, and no one I know personally plays ESO.  :(

I've checked out GW2, doesn't seem like the kind of game I'd play.  I guess on the upside, I'll be saving $15/mo.

Guild Wars 2 is a game you can rely on to go back to without  having to worry about paying money upfront for a subscription to even long into or buying that "next" expansion to catch up to everyone else.

Family events are great if you can make them. Last I checked majority of them are in the Pacific time zone set. Not saying there isnt ever someone to play with when you log in there is always someone that is willing to join in whatever you want to do or if you ask them if they mind you joining what they are doing.

As for chatting within the guild. Be prepared to follow one sided conversations if you are not on Raidcall. Majority of pick up events and random chatter are on Raidcall. Myself since having the baby I havent been able to log into Raidcall but if you need to get someones attention there is always whispers.

If you just feel like logging in one day to farm stuff for people through the Marketplace, or roaming around a zone to complete the achievements for the day. There is no "omg you have to be logged in for xxx amount of hours to get anything accomplished".

P.S. Beware the jumping puzzles. I hate them!

What Ysolde said.

As someone who's just come back to GW2 after trying a pay-to-win Korean MMO (ArcheAge) I'll add that it's WONDERFUL as F2P titles go.  You really don't need to spend any money at all to progress or compete.   The cash shop is truly cosmetics and small conveniences.   And good, nice looking gear is readily obtainable through quite a few playstyles.

Plus the combat style is really fluid and FUN.  :)

The most wonderful thing about GW2 is that the server is a party and everyone is invited! Doing events with other players is rewarded, resource gathering nodes are all shared and shoutout (like for example: there is a rich iron vein near the bad guys lair!), people are glad to see other players and the community is very friendly and helpful. Are you a casual? Don't you play as much as others? Don't worry, when your friends enter a lower level area, they are downleveled to the area and be able to share the fun, xp, loot and events for everyone! So you can pick up where you left if you stop playing :3

The gem store mostly offers hats, weapons skins and convenient items for a fee, but those are not mandatory or needed for a good experience. Unless you like hats, or you like not having to buy gathering tools every so often.

Also family events are the most wonderful thing ever, running dungeons with Old Goat, running WvW with out commanders, clearing maps with Rylssa, it's all very fun and you level super fast :3

Only reason it was stated that the ESO chapter "might" close is based on numbers and the restrictions Fog has for keeping a full Gaiscioch chapter going.

The awesome thing is GW2 being F2P without P2W is that once you got the game you got the game!  Now I haven't played it since like a summer run with Kaitlyn because I really like ESO!  So even if Gaiscioch closes in ESO, I'm still going to be there some how.  Will I come back to GW2 when ESO closes?  I'm not sure yet.  It depends on how ESO is going for me with the roleplay stuff I've gotten into and whomever sticks around that wants to still have a guild for GSCH to hang in even if it ain't GSCH anymore.

But as for GW2, I do love a lot in that game even ESO grabbed me a great deal more.  So you might see me back in GW2 now and then based on where ESO goes.  =)  If I do go back it will just be for the WvW mostly, the PvE even with the live story stuff just started boring me a long time ago, and I'll probably play my snarky little Asura elementalist whenever on.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I'm staying put in ESO, just thinking about a GW2 account as well. I was looking at the classes and the warrior and thief seems to be my two types of play styles. As I always have a hybrid tank and a stealthy damage dealer in every game I play. Any advice on that front? Also,  was looking at the game itself. There is a $20 difference in the 2 digital versions. Any reason to go with one or the other taking price out of it?

I recently started playing GW2 myself (started about a month ago), after I grew bored with ESO.  One of the things that really impressed me about GW2 is that there is a much greater variety of things to do (although I still think ESO has the better pvp system).

As far as catching up to people who have been playing for 2 years, it's not that hard.  Leveling is extremely fast, and you can hit 80 in under 2 weeks without trying very hard.  As for gear, armor quality goes as follows: basic -> rare -> masterpiece -> exotic -> ascended.  As you do quests and events (including those in WvW), you earn a currency called karma. Karma can be used in the level 80 zones of Orr to buy a set of really nice exotic armor.  Furthermore, if you participate in guild mission events, you get guild commendations, with which you can buy ascended accessories.  Doing daily achievements, which just naturally get completed as you level, earns you laurels, which can be used to buy ascended rings and amulets.  And finally, it is very easy to participate in world boss events (since they are on set timers and just zerged down), which will net you even more gear.

As for weapons, they follow the same tiers as armor, except there is an extra level called legendary.  Legendary weapons are very rare, and not many people have them.  They aren't that much better than ascended weapons, and are mainly desired for their looks more than anything else.  Again, it is not that hard or expensive to get a nice exotic weapon.  Ascended is a little more difficult, and legendary is pretty crazy.

So all in all, you can level fast, and get very well geared pretty easily.  I hit level 80 with less than half of the maps cleared, so you still have a ton of things to do at max level, as well as doing your personal story, the living story, tons of achievements (including the infamous jump puzzles ;)), crafting, etc.  It's a very easy game to get started with, with a wealth of stuff to uncover and do as you progress.

Phaewolf, I can't help you with Warrior or Thief thoughts, except to recommend you try each to 20 then decide.   There's quite a lot of build flexibility within each class, and it's easy to switch up builds later.   Gear too.

Re the two versions, I think the cheaper one is fine.  I haven't personally used (or thought about) the extra items in the more expensive version since launch, lol.

The deluxe version is just a minipet, a bunch of consumables and an elite skill that's arguably weaker than the elite skills that already exist in the game. I got the deluxe digital when the game first launched, but if I were buying now, I'd just go for the standard digital version. If you get the standard digital version and later decide you want the deluxe digital, you can upgrade from within the game, so it's not an irreversible decision if you change your mind.

Good info and feed back guys and gals. Thank you all. I guess sometime around the end of the holidays / beginning of the new year plan on seeing me on GW2 as well as more active in ESO. Right now with college football "Roll Tide" and the holidays and the work schedule and the general blah I have right now I think new years would be the best time to come back swinging in ESO and starting GW2. Bowl games will be set, endless purging of money on travel and gifts will be done and work should calm down. In the words of Mr. Montgomery Burns "Excellent"

One word of advice Phaewolf, even if you don't plan to play until the new year, the game is almost for sure going to be half price over Thanksgiving weekend (it was half price at the start of both October and November).  You may want to purchase it then. Since there is no subscription fee, it doesn't matter if it sits around for a couple of months.

I think if we do move from ESO I'll use the Wednesday Night event for a Guild Wars 2 101 Event series to walk new players through the key points and things to know about the game. Perhaps a half pve half wvw focus with some of the hidden fun spots people dont  usually visit.

The half-price sales seem to occur around major US holidays, there was one last year around Thanksgiving, then another in May this year (close to Easter). So as Falcon says, we're probably due for another, if not November, then my bet would be around December-January.  I grabbed a second account in the May sale so I could play with friends on the Jade Sea (French) server (EU region account). $25 well spent, given the absence of an ongoing sub.

As others have said, it's very much a "pick up and play" game, and doesn't penalize you for starting late or leaving for some time and then returning. GW2 is unusual in that respect; it's designed around being inclusive to as many players (skill and playstyle) as possible, without creating a gear  treadmill like some subscription games, or putting critical items (like basic bag slots) behind a cash shop paywall like some free-to-pay games.

Maybe we can talk another event leader into taking up Fog's idea of GW2 101.  I bought it, tried it, felt lost, gave up.  Would love it if we had an event to "show the ropes", hopefully it would run at a time when East coasters are awake:)

Well it's been a good 18 months at least since I was last in GW2, I am updating the client now and will see if it grabs me again. As for ESO I was still in love with the game when I started my new job this year and found I had zero time to devote to anything else, but I never stopped paying my sub. I am updating ESO also. I still don't have much free time with work, but I would like to start to dabble a little again.

I'd have to say the only thing I do not like about GW2 atm is the fact if you do not log in within the "freebie" giveaway of the current stage in Season 2, you are forced into pay 200 gems for it. Depending on the season, I believe it is up to 5-6 now that is a total of 1000 gems to play it. However lets hope that at the end of Season 2 if players do not mind, they will do a discount.

It's paying gems or losing the chance to play it at all, like the season 1. I hope they do add the season 1 with achievements. I would love to get the halo thingie that I missed because of health problems.

One of the things I really like about GW2 is being a n00b isn't really an issue.  There's so much to do at any level, leveling itself is pretty decent speed-wise, and the community as a whole is remarkably good about answering any questions in map chat.  Occasionally you get a troll in chat, but Anet has been really good about weeding those out.  The last unpleasant person I dealt with was during a Halloween event - the guy had targeted how I play my mesmer and was just a complete jerk.  This was part of a pretty large zerg, and once the rest of the group caught on, they all just blasted him from every direction.  It's a great feeling to know the community has your back like that, even though it's rarely needed.

I've been in the game since the start, but I'm also super-casual and still have 3 80s, 2 in the 60s and 1 in the 20s.  Right now I'm taking my main, that 80 mesmer, and going for map complete.  This means I'm spending all my time in lower levels, but the tasks are all still fun.  You are leveled down to the map you're on, and while it's still easier than if you were level appropriate, if you don't pay attention you can still die, so it's not all easy mode.  It's also kind of nice to be able to help the actual lower levels when you see them struggling.

As others have said, there's no pay to win, the cash shop is mostly boosts, pets, armors and costumes.  I, personally, have a giant addiction to purty things, so I tend to get a lot of cash items, but it is 100% optional.  You buy cash shop items with gems, which can be purchased with real money, or you can buy gems with the gold you earn in-game, so everyone has a chance to shop.

As far as WvW goes, I don't really do it much.  I'm not a big pvp'er, but the couple of times I've actually managed to be on when we're doing guild stuff in there, it HAS been fun.  Unfortunately, most events are not held at times where I can really attend, so I miss out.  Oh!  Except for Rylssa's map clear events, which are on the weekends.  She runs them at different map levels and spends about 3 hours clearing the map to help people advance, gather resources and get skill traits.  She does a fab job with those and I definitely recommend  those if you decide to play.  They're on the website calendar.

Ok, talked enough :-p.  I say give it a shot, you'll have fun with us!

Edited:  Had to change my numbers, my non-80s were higher level than I thought!  Come say hi in-game :)
