I received a call from the bank fraud department this morning. After verifying it was really my bank (because I'm suspicious like that these days), and them verifying it was really me, they asked if I'd purchased $50 worth of garcinia pills from North Korea. Apparently, North Korea is not really high on the trustworthiness scale, so the fraud department declined that transaction and called me right away. However, they did find another garcinia transaction made from within the US (or at least a company that may have had a US IP). That one went had gone through, but the bank reversed that one for me. Needless to say, I've cancelled my bank card, and I'm going to go to the three credit bureaus to put a fraud alert on my name. I'll be doing a malware and in depth antivirus scan, although I suspect that it's related to an online purchase I made through Alibaba or possibly the Target or hospital hackings that happened in the last 9 months (see here for an article on it: http://money.cnn.com/2014/08/18/technology/security/hospital-chs-hack/ ).

Anyway, it's really easy to ignore checking our bank statements, but since my card got hacked, and I'm generally careful about these things, I highly recommend you check your accounts, too. That way, you can make sure there are no fraudulent transactions, and if there are, you can get them reversed by your bank quickly. Don't let those thieves get any more money!

Have you ever saved credit card information into a browser or game?

IF it is software that has captured this information, that is generally how it is gathered.  Other ways it can be done is by posing as a popular service provider, cold calling you and asking for personal details to "verify" who you are for their system.  The very "verification" process that fraud departments use when they call you is how these criminal organisations get your details.  This is why I try to avoid major corporations as service providers, Telstra is the biggest one in Australia that I've seen listed for hoaxes and data collectors.

I highly suggest getting budget software like YNAB to manage your budget, that gives you an excuse to keep a close eye on your statements while at the same time you are positively managing your budget :)

I only have one CC and it has a $25 notification limit on it - over that they send me a text message.  Even with that I check my bank ATM and my CC transactions every week!

Also be sure to have different passwords for every online account you have and please make them complicated - keep a journal and write them down.  Never - ever - use the same password or similar passwords for your internet accounts - no number sequences, parent's or children's names - no birthdays; total randomness is your friend.  With social networking it is too easy for anyone to get your info since you have "put it out there" for the world to view so if you use something as your password that you let the world view - well, it just isn't a good thing.

And... don't overlook charges of $.99 or $1 - as these are often used by CC thieves to check the CC to be sure it is good - that is why I check mine every week - statements are available online and it is simple to do while watching a movie or TV show to pull it up and check.

Additionally I don't use my smart phone for mobile banking - it is even easier to hack into them and get all of your info.  And never click on any links from unknown sources or strange e-mails that supposedly arrive from your "friends" - if you don't know why your best friend sent you a strange link - they probably didn't.

I have a fairly oblivious friend who sends me an email about every 3 months with just a strange link in it or something simple like "Thought this would interest you" followed by a link - I email or text her separately with "what the heck is this" and she says "I didn't send that!"  I then say, "tell your husband to run your virus scan now."  She has typically clicked on a link that came to her and has "raided" her address book and then sent advertisements or whatever (I just delete the e-mails as I only know that what ever the link is - it isn't good) to all of her contacts.

If you don't trust something don't click on it - even if it is apparently from a trusted source.  Contact them another way and verify.  Scammers and phishers are everywhere.

Thanks for all the helpful tips. :) I avoid smartphone transactions like the plague, too. There are just too many ways to get access to an account that way. I don't use public wifi for transactions, either. I have a password journal like you do, Morigana. With all the accounts I have, I couldn't remember all the different ones I used anymore. It's a pain in the butt, but after getting my BioWare account hacked about 6 or 7 years back even with a pretty strong password, it's a necessity.

Elth--when the bank called me, I asked them pointed questions before I would talk to them, and they never asked me for my account number. If they had, I would have called the police after hanging up on them.

Hopefully, with all the helpful information here, others will be able to protect themselves. I'm making an educated guess that my account was hacked from Alibaba.

Yeah, I always check my credit card and bank statements to see what is going on.  My husband pretty much keeps track of the bank more than once a week to make sure everything is balanced right.  We do a lot of things online due to living in the boonies, haven't had someone get at us.

Actually the bank we use for checking has replaced my husband's card a couple times due to knowing he used it at a place caught doing fraudulent things. That was a grocery store in the "city" near us.  We avoid that place like the plague now because our bank caught them at it twice in a two year period.

So even shopping out can be a problem, so make sure your bankers that supply your debit and credit card services are good ones and pay attention to this kind of stuff.

Keeping your computer secure with a good protection program and checking for malware on a regular basis has been a must have for quite some time now.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I'd consider contacting the police about that store--if they've done it to you, they've done it to others. If you really don't like them, report them to the IRS, because I would bet they're not reporting their illegally gotten money as income. That'll definitely put a stop to their behavior.
