The "Days Active" item in the family membership requirements is calculated on a constant basis. This is NOT based on a calculation between the day you joined and today. You are awarded 1 day for each day you've logged into the website. As long as you log in once every 7 days you will continue earning active days. If you stop logging into the website after 7 days your account will stop accruing active days. Once you return it will start counting again.
So if you decide to step away from the family your timer will stop until the day you decide to return. This is Days Active, not Days Inactive. We want to reward people for being active on our website and inside our community and thus we only award these to those who are constantly active.
Hope this clears the air on how these work.
Example:
Joe joins on 4/1/2011 and plays with the family until 4/30/2011 then decides to go play another game for a while. Joe will be awarded 37 days and then his timer will stop. Then Joe returns on 1/1/2012 and plays until 1/30/2012 he will be awarded another 37 days giving him a total 74 active days.
Sidebar:
This was activated in the early days of RIFT at the time we activated it we calculated the difference from Join Date to Last Login and awarded 1 Active Day for every day between.
