I have been in Portland, OR a little more than a year, and it has been great. The job situation, however, has been interesting. In March I will be transferring to a new position with the same company. The new position is in Oakland, CA, so I am California bound!

Good luck on your endevor. Most people who work in Oakland don't ive in Oakland, or right outside of it. Commuting is the way of life around these parts. I got the heck out of San Fran some years back, and I'm glad I did.
It definitely will not be Portland, but I think it will be a positive move for me.
I will be flying down soon to look at apartments. The rent is quite high. Some of the information I have read online suggests that rent is higher in the San Francisco area than in New York City. The weather is nicer in San Francisco.

I lived in that area for more than a decade, before retiring to Colorado. I was sorry to leave it, but as you say housing is incredibly expensive. I lived in a little E Bay town called Point Richmond. Much cooler than Bay Area average, nice parks, festivals, farmers market ('cause right on the bay) and close to BART. On the down side, it's N of the Maze from Oakland and a bit distant from shopping and night life.
