Feb 15,2013 went to the Eye Dr. for a check up and be told some rough news.

I was given a window of 10 yrs-20 yrs before the chances of me becoming blind happen.

I was also ask if the previous eye Dr I had seen had said anything to me about it, which I reply saying was never made aware of this.

Dr said sad that someone could careless about your eyes when you could loose everything visually forever.

I was told I have the chance to fix the issue with getting correction surgry done, wasnt given a price but I know personal that is a long shot for me personal since money is tight, but figure I let you all since I may have  been with this family a short time but felt for those who have and do game with me you like to hear it from me and not someone down the road.

With High Hopes and Wishes.

Hope to see you all around atleast in-game wise, beyond that game on and may you all be blessed.

I'll be praying that you get to see everything as long as you live. If the eye doctor feels that you need the surgery and can convince insurance it will save you from going blind, it has a better chance of being covered. Not sure what you insurance setup is, but it doesn't hurt to find out cost, coverage, etc about it.

Don't mess with Mama Bear, I might hug you too tight. =D

I was told that based on my family history I will likely develop cataracts sometime after I turn 35 or so, and it was pretty certain by the time I turn 50. The first milestone passed 7 years ago. Hope your luck is as good as mine has been so far, and that it turns worse for neither of us.

I am very sorry to hear this and I hope the prognosis is wrong, or that you find a way to get the surgery you need. Being British, even after all these years, I still can't get my head around people having to go without necessary surgery because of health insurance issues. Sending positive thoughts your way, and like Bri said above, it is worth finding out everything you can don't give up hope. (((hugs)))

Thanks for all the replies so far, who knows like I said hoping for the best is all I can do and trying to figure out a saving plan for it. Sadly no Health Insurance at the moment and job doesn't offer it to PT workers, so kinda out of luck from the point. Just have to figure a budget plan for it.

Sorry to hear about your bad news, but you are in our prayers, my Friend. I hope everything works out for you as doctors can only guess about what the futures holds. My eye dr. told me that I'd need glasses again after lasik surgery and it's been close to 15 years since then and I still don't need glasses.

I'm sorry to hear about your eyes. I hope everything works out for you - at least with the new health insurance laws if/when you do get insurance you cannot be turned away for pre-existing conditions.

You may want to try to find a research or educational type hospital in your area. Many of them have payment programs or bill you after. My wife needed back surgery and our local college hospital did it, then sent us a bill as well as offering several payment options. Her surgery was over $22,000.00.We don't have insurance either,so I feel your pain.I wish you the best and don't lose hope or give up trying to find a solution.

On something this serious and grave, I would suggest seeing a second doctor. I assume this was an ophthalmologist, right? Most large medical centers have ways people who can't afford it to get at least a review of their condition. There also seem to be charitable organizations that work to prevent blindness. I noted the long time frame. When do you need the surgery, now, within 5 years, within 10? There seems to be time to find a job with available health coverage. The part of the health care act that prevents insurers from covering someone based on pre-existing conditions takes effect next year, so maybe that won't be a problem. Of course this assumes you live in the U. S. Do you remember the name of the disease? In medical situations, knowledge is definitely power and Google is your friend. Don't just accept this - fight like hell! Good luck and God bless you in your fight.

I have to add to this thread as i have undergone a serious eye operation a few years back. I had a corneal transplant on my left eye. After 18 months of healing the new tissue was corrupted by the old diseased tissue. My left eye is now worse than it was before and is not correctable now with contacts or glasses. The only option i have now is another transplant using a bigger piece of donor tissue and there is still no guarantee it will make things better. The operation cost over 50k when it was all said and done. This included numerous follow up visits. The point i am trying to get across is even if you have the cash and get the operation it may end up worse. Please take time to research the success rate of what you are having done. Going through life with 1 eye really takes away from many things that you do and limits more activities than you can imagine.

Sending positive thoughts/vibes/prayers your way. Don't lose hope - look at the medical advancements they've made. Deaf people now have implants so they can hear. It's only a matter of time before they develop a way for the blind to see. I know how frightening it is, staring at the rest of your life after having been given a prognosis that changes your whole life. But don't lose hope. Miracles happen every day.

I'm sorry to hear about that. 10-20 years is a ways off, it sounds like an "if/maybe", a lot can happen in that time and I know, for a fact, that Drs. do like to sell surgeries. Eye surgery is very risky, I've looked into a couple things over the past years, had some try to sell me on surgery, and some gave frank feedback about the dangers of eye surgery and suggested a "wait and see" type of thing. I'd suggest getting more opinions, maybe even contact your previous Dr and ask them why they never said anything.

I agree with all of you about research just saying hearing about chance of being blind is not good to hear just seems normally I dont listen to Drs. Just in my family our eyes have always had issues but lucky none of us have gone blind while they were alive so maybe I'm just being a bit to much into it.

My thoughts are with you. I have a genetic eye defect myself. It's supposedly rare, but 3 of 7 siblings have it. My brother has had one cornea replacement already and it took. Luckily mine has stabilized and I wear what KitKat refers too as skinned coke bottle lens. You may want to see if there is a group that deals with your particular eye issue. I get newsletters from the Kerataconus group which keeps me up to date on the most recent developments and some promising research that is still about 5 to 7 years out due to FDA hoops and dances. When I moved to Mountain View 16 years ago, I switched eye doctors and lucked into an expert in the field. I told him he is not allowed to retire. :P

Lot's of great stuff shared here. This is also why Gaiscioch is way more than just a gaming crew. The people care about each other and our networking gets suggestions and even help out there for each other. I thank those that had great ideas to share to help Balor out. This is what makes me stick with Gaiscioch more than the gaming.

I will only say that a positive attitude is everything when it comes to matters of health. Keep yours... knowledge is power so gain as much as possible. Search for vitamins/minerals/herbs that will help in restoration or delay - and get that second opinion - always get a second opnion - even a third. It is your health - your body and unless you have a doctor that actually cares about you - well... they make mistakes also. Two experiences from my past... I was having a lot of work done on my teeth... new fillings put in, old ones restored... two bridges redone. The dentist after several visits told me that one of my roots was too close to my sinus cavity and he didn't wish to pull that one out and it also looked impacted from the x-ray they had done a month before. Made an appointment with an oral surgeon to do the extraction in case it "opened into my sinus cavity and needed stitches to close it back up". The oral surgeon took one look at the area and calmly stated "so how long did your dentist say you had this TUMOR" I found out at that moment that I had a tumor growing in my mouth that was eating through my jawbone. I went though shock, denial, acceptance, and treatment options in about 2 minutes. All went well... it hasn't returned - and it was non-cancerous but I do have a quarter size hole inside my mouth where I can store peanuts for a winter day. Another time I had a terrible skin condition - started when I was 50... severe breakouts all over my body but it started as a small patch on my hand which I went to the doctor for. To make it real short (as this covered a two year span) I was treated... failed... spread to other portions of my arm... treated differently - failed... spread to my legs... treated failed .... spread to my back... treatment.... failed... spread to my chest.... treatment .... failed.... spread to my face.... (treatment consisted of many different antibiotics, oral steroids, steroid shots, topical antibiotics, topical fungal creams... etc, etc,) Finally, in an outburst of frustration, I screamed at the doctor to stop "practicing medicine" - with "practicing" being the optimal word and get me a specialist. After one visit to the Skin and Cancer Clinic (and no I didn't have skin cancer although they did biopsi it as a precaution) I was cleared up few weeks. I probably missed over a month of work, found out I was allergic to sulpha type drugs, gained over 50 lbs from the steroids, and was miserable 90% of the time - all from many a bad diagnosis... The point to all of this... Doctors can do wonders... but they do make mistakes. Get several opinions - and feel comfortable with your doctor - then get your head on straight - and keep a possitive attitude that it will all be o.k. Believe in the power of your mind to make positive changes in your body and get the proper treatment - and once you set your course of treatment - believe in it. I send you good thoughts and well wishes.

Hang in there bud, it's only a matter of time before cybernetic eyes are as popular as prosthetic limbs are now. If (not when, if) your eyes do go, you'll be able to replace them with awesome zooming, photo capturing, laser shooting ones!

Have you thought about having the surgery in Mexico? I know that many people think that Doctors from Mexico are not well prepared but that is NOT true. My ex-father in law traveled from Maine to Guadalajara, Mexico (The second biggest city in Mexico) to get lasik eye surgery and while in the US it would have costed him 20k per eye, here it only costed 1,200 USD for both, using the same technology and with great results. I could look up for information here if you need it :) I wish you the best!

Never loose hope balor. I am in a similar boat to you. Last year I went into the eye doctor for a normal checkup got new glasses but had issue shortly after it. My eyesight got blurry. I have had it in the past but it always went away. Well this time I was lucky because I had went to a new eye doctor in a clinic my insurance covered and this Doctor was a specialist in the diseases I had who immediately saw what the problem was. You see I was diagnosed with a extremely rare genetic disease called Keratoconus. It is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal gradual curve. This causes increased pressure behind the cornea . Keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with multiple images, streaking and sensitivity to light all often reported by the patient. In the later stages it can cause blindness. The doctor told me I was in the later stages. This could mean eventually I will need corneal transplantation. Right now they are trying the treatment which is special contact lenses that force the cornea back into a more normal curve and also help lower the pressure. Unfortunately for me I also have to wear glasses which is only needed in the worst cases. I just had an appointment 4 months ago for an update and new prescription and was told it has gotten worse and that it might be time to put me on the transplant list. I was told it could happen anytime now one of the unfortunate things about the disease and the other problems I have is that my other medication is making it less predictable. I have been going to a support group for my disease last 2 month and can say that its helped so much . I was angry and upset when I first found out about the disease and even moreso when was told it had progressed. That support group has changed my life in the last 2 months. We had a rep for a new contact designed for people with my disease and that rep recommended me for a trial study for it. I am alittle happy to say that the last checkup today the doctor told me it has not progresed any farther and she actually knocked on wood and said I may not need to be put on the transplant list I guess what I am trying to say is never give up bud . Its ok to get mad and be afraid but never give up. try to find a support group and go to the meetings. It may seem hopeless or even worthless. I kow I felt that way but I am glad I went now. my disease will never be cured unless I get transplants but at least I have a small hope of extending that time before I need them. maybe something similar is waiting for you. Stay strong and may you be blessed with good health.

Check around with various insurance companies for private health insurance and remember that science is your friend! New surgeries and techniques are being developed all the time. Also, the first cybernetic/bionic eyes are being tested so in 10-20 years there should be better ones. I hope everything works out and you'll be able to have your eyes fixed.

I was never told what the condition was so when I go back to get my glasses picked up I see if I can have a sit down and see if I can find out if it has a name or if I am a new condition to be added to the books. Guy seemed like a normal Eye Dr so maybe when I get a chance I have a non Eye Glass Dr give me a Exam. Thank you all for your warm words, with recent events happening at home has effected my gaming and my mental stability so thanks again for only time will heal me with support which is what I need.

@Vay - Yeah, my brother had to go in a few times when his stitches popped, said it wasn't fun. Doc said mine have held steady at their current thinning for the last five years. These hybrid contact lens are great, and I've gone thru several sets of them before getting these. It's a hard lens center and soft lens skirt. It keeps the hard part just off the eye over the cone. He was so impressed how near perfect my new vision became that he had one of his colleagues come in and look at my eyeballs. Unfortunately, I started having to hold a book about arm's length away to get a good focal point, so on top of my contacts I'm wearing reading glasses to read. =sigh= I'm about the age now that my older brother had to get his transplant and haven't had to myself and hoping I never do. I can't imagine having eye surgery when you have to be awake and watching them do it. =shudder= My hat's off to you there, Vay. From what the doc said, the cornea is actually made of bone and the therapy they are developing is to reweave the bone back so the eruption on the cornea repairs itself. At my visit in Dec, he said they had just started testing it out on human subjects. Since mine isn't severe, I'd never be a clinical trial candidate. I have to wait till it is a normally approved therapy. Rainy roads at night are worst for me since the lights stretch in a huge starbursts. Since getting these lens though, it's not too bad. When I get a new set of students each Fall, I tell them to write neatly and not small since I have "old lady eyes." Some times when I walk around checking homework, I had it back and say, "you're killing me, dude." Be curious to hear what item it terms out to be. Might be Gaiscioch has an inordinate number of kerataconus sufferers. :P

First of all, I'm surprised at the number of people in this thread who have corneal disease/keratoconus! Hang in there, my family!! Balor--I sent you a PM. I'm an eye doc, and I have a genetic retinal problem, so I have experience on both sides of the chair, so to speak. There are a number of groups that help people who don't have insurance, like the Salvation Army and (for eyes in particular) the Lion's Club. For medications, the drug companies have special programs set up for people who have no insurance but can't afford medications, either. Sometimes the community health clinic or even the Department of Vocational Rehab can be resources.

Hi Balor - you are in my prayers. Is your problem macular degeneration? If so -my husband has this - and the Doctor told him of some vitamins that appear to slow the effect in about 30%of his patients. My husband started taking them about 6 years ago and his macular degeneration has not progressed at all since he started them. If you wanna look at them www.macularhealth.com. He takes the premier version.
