On the PTS server now they are testing the next patch ,.   It applies to veteran ranks . and basicaly if you are grouped with other veterans and they are 5 lvls or more higher than you , you have to do a lot of damage to recieve exp or loot .

so basically you can`t skip the lame veteran zone quest grind by going to craglorn at veteran 1 and grinding out levels like you can now .  looks like i need to hurry up and level in crag before it1s too late .

well though they are also getting rid of vp too so xp will be (theoretically) less need to grind vet zones too.  Also it's the same system they use for non vet content btw.

It all depends , when I see the champion point system , I see old EQ  alternat advancement points,  which you could get exp off a mob or quest etc and it gave you point  towards an AA exp bar .

When you filled it up you recieved a AA point , that could be used to buy stuff like extra skills they are talking about adding with the champion system .

They may be removing the Veteran rank system , but the grind will still be there aven worse now because people will be grinding for the fasest exp per hour possible to gain champ points the fasest , the same as it was in EQ heh .

I know a lot of people actually like the grinding of other factions quest  for endgame , i personally can`t stand it , i`d rather grind out  1 veteran rank an hour than waste time grinding out the other factions quest zones .

What I read that is on the PTS now being tested wasn`t the removal of the vet rank system not yet , but them nerfing lower vets from going to crag and grinding out lvls,

Eventually they will remove vet system all together but on this patch . unless i read it wrong .

If they remove the getting exp in crag for low lvls next patch but not get rid of the vet rank system , then guess i`ll cancle until that patch goes live , as i`d rather cancle than do the other factions quests .

But we`ll see what goes live next patch .

from what I read the champion system is going to be implemented in 4 phases.  This phases wipes veteran points and makes all things exp based instead.  From what I read with phases 2&3 are going to be a hybrid of having the champ system while still keeping your vet rank.  And the last phase wiping your vet rank all together.  I have also read that this champ system being described is more or less an exact copy of the diablo 3 system which was received very well.

The second point of the champion system is the most game changing IMO as well...They are doing away with soft caps and are instead going for a hard cap system with the cap being very intense to hit.  The example given was with armor....In their example the hard cap is 50% damage reduction. Here's the quote:

"Paul Sage showed us a mock-up of how the stats are changing and how they will be allocated. For example, 18% of our total armor will come from the base armor value. Obviously heavy armor has a higher base value than that of light so in order to achieve that 18% you’ll want heavy armor. 4% from Reinforced, 24% from the champion system, and so forth. No longer can we substitute one area for another, a light armor tank using buffs to hit soft cap."

That in my opinion was the biggest problem with the game for me...There was really no reason to use heavy armor in cyrodil or even in dungeons because the caps were really easy to hit without it.  So to hear that soft caps are not only going away, but also hard caps are going will require much more thought and dedication to hit is a great thing.

I understand the hesitation and I go agree that there will be a surge of people only doing exp trains so to speak.  I just don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.  Mostly every MMO has ways to level the fastest or grind the best way, but a lot of people just play to have fun.  I'm always a glass half full kind of guy and I barely started picking the game back up again.  It's a little bit off topic but since when would you recover a chunk of stamina for a successful power attack? It's pretty cool

one of the biggest things wrong was them making every class in the game a mage by basicly making everyones class skills  req magic .

I mean every npc in the game  even uses magic lol

I don`t see the exp grinding as a bad thing , to be honest i`d rather  grind mobs for hours than run around doing fed ex quests for exp.

I miss doing quests for a rare sword, or magic belt, ring etc , gone are the days of a quest actually being a quest , now they are just for  leveling  and quest rewards mostly useless ha . ohwell

Yeah I don't like that either about all class skills requiring magicka.  I mean at least the nightblade should have stamina based abilities...

Here is what is says in the patch notes:

  • When grouped, players with a Veteran Rank more than five ranks lower than other group members must now contribute sufficient damage to enemies to receive XP or loot from them.

This requirement was already in place for groups from levels 1-49.

I guess it would be nice to know what sufficient means, but I don't think this is going to change the Craglorn grinds too much.  To get the bosses in there you will have to deal damage, not just touch them once or just get XP for being in the group and being close when the boss is killed.  Luckily most of the bosses in Craglorn that we are grinding stay up for quite a long time and give you plenty of time to get your shots in even if you are the lowest among a group of V13's.

Another thing to remember in the Veteran levels:

  • It takes 1,432,550 Experience Points to gain a Veteran Rank. We expect this to greatly reduce the amount of time it takes to gain a Veteran Rank.

Now if that means that it takes 1.4 mill xp for every VR 1-13 to gain a level then the grind just got significantly shorter....unless they drastically reduce the XP per boss.  At V12 I was running the Upper Craglorn grind racking up 1.3 to 1.4 million per hour and it was barely putting a dent in the 4 to 5 mill+ needed to gain a level.

I think what this does is actually allows you to gain rank by doing the main quests in each zone (gotta get those free skill points) and hitting the dungeons & dark anchors without feeling like you HAVE to grind Craglorn to push max level.  I am working on getting my 3rd & 4th and was dreading the grind ahead of me.  Now I have options and it doesn't seem so bad.

EDIT:  Just logged on to PTS and my V10 only needs 1,432,550 xp compared to 4,560,000 on live.  I will compare the xp gain for bosses when I get time this evening.

It sounds like they are trying to keep "power leveling" down.  I remember in DAOC, I leveled toons by having my 50 necro drag around my low level and a cleric bot and just kill huge amounts of high level mobs solo.

I agree and disagree with power leveling.  I feel you don't learn how to play your toon well when you level too fast, so you end up with a bunch of max level people who have no idea how to actually use their skills correctly.  Then again, for the people that only care about end game content and have a lot of MMO experience, power leveling is nice.

Right now I'm the opposite of Dirkdaring.  I'm loving being able to actually level with quests (I get very bored with grinding).  I was happy that we can do the other faction quest lines without having to make a new toon on those factions.   Now my alts are leveling mainly by AvA and guild events, so it will stink to need to go through some quests with them to get the skill points, but I still wouldn't want to level them too fast, or again, I'll be max level and not know what I'm doing.

yep the max lvl and not knowing how to play i`ve seen those a lot over the year , however I was not refering to taking a lvl 3 and power lvling him to v 14 so he has never played  his toon lol .

I am refering to someone that completed the main story, mage and fighters guild quests and all the Achivement for quests on his faction , getting to V 1 and deciding to skip  the other 2 faction quest grind .

Having 1 toon that i did all the stuff for for my faction, and 2 more that are almost 45  , I think I have the knowing my class thing down .  games not that hard to figure out really  I`ve been playing MMO since 99 , and always have several max lvl toons in each game . all which lvl up normally if i lvl their silly quest system from 1 - 50   on 3 toons , i should have the class figured out enough to skip and power lvl the last 14 lvls ,

And since the story doesn`t intrest me or the other factions zones or quest,  skipping it shouldn`t be an issue . :D

but well see   I honestly don`t think they have a clue what they are doing . the fact they are changing so much in such a short time after launch just enforces it hehe .

I don't think ZoS is grasping at straws here, rather relying on feedback from the community and data gleaned from ongoing R&D to try and make things better for the majority.

I think the willingness to make changes shows that they want to have a great product, not just a short term revenue maker.

Ok, I took a little time to check xp on a boss and it is not encouraging.  I took out the exact same boss in Stormhold with the same character (they copied our characters from live over to the PTS).  Live gave me 1140 points for the kill and 6387 for the boss completion.  PTS gave me 682 for the kill and 1240 for the boss completion.

I will go back and mess around and take out a few more for comparison, hopefully a few in Craglorn.  But, take the premise I stated above and throw it out the window.  Early returns looks like it is going to be just as slow as ever.  I am hoping for the best but my expectations are set for much lower.

Barren...

Didn't see where anyone answered your question about the heavy attacks/stamina... but I just woke up and I'm sipping my coffee.... so my eyes are still a tad blurry :)

Last patch included a change to what stam weapons did on heavy attacks.  Full heavy attacks with all but staves grants a stamina gain, includes the bow, and full heavy attacks with staves give a magic return.   They also took away the resto staff granting a damage bonus based on your health.   These were all great changes, imho, since it means something to you based on what weapon you carry and no more seeing DPS builds just carry resto staves and nothing else - they are meant for healers.

Thanks Morigana, I definitely adds to the strategy of heavy attacks as well...I also hear that soon the lighting heavy attack can change targets mid channel which is cool as well.

They added that attack note for "Lightning Staff" but I didn't see it listed for the others. Not sure why - but I might have just missed it - the whole blurry eye thing and lack of coffee ;)
