Awakening From The Bliss

By: Vindrael

I remember the day clearly. I remember being nothing more than a spot on a butterfly's wing in a beautiful valley. I was everything and yet I was nothing, it was an experience that's impossible to describe with words.

The next thing I knew, I was sitting in a chamber with machines all around me, electricity filling the air. I knew about Defiant technology during my life, but I had died in the desert to a sand scorpion. How could it be that I was alive again? I didn't want to be there, I wanted to go back to the peace and beauty that the next life was just beginning to show me.

Then I heard it. The shrieking sounds of something terrible, something unlike anything I'd ever heard before. Something was terribly wrong... A technician named Sulyn briefly explained that Defiant technology was finally able to bring people back using the souls of fallen heroes. I would still be me, but three others would join me in this life, a second chance of sorts. The past had to be changed because in this reality, Regulos was winning. Nobody could survive the trip to the past except for those who had already been dead before. My mind was whirring, remember all I had learned before in necromancy. Yes, it made sense; risen creatures exist somewhere between life and death... Somehow, the defiant were able to use their knowledge and technology to imbue the dead with new souls.

I now exist somewhere between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead. Sylver Valis assures me that I am fully alive, but I can feel it. I feel the others within me, and I can sometimes still see that valley and that spot on the butterfly's wing. I've changed.

Fortunately, there are others like me in Telara. The people call us the "Ascended". I guess it's because they don't know what death is like yet; they should be calling us the "Fallen" if you ask me. Be that as it may, we are the only hope this world has against the dragon armies and Regulos himself. I don't fear him, there is nothing he can do that hasn't been done before. I only hope that I, and the souls within me, can live up to the faith that has been put into all of us to save this world.
